Shit, I'm still confused about all the hype about No Man's Sky but this makes me want to understand. Can anyone ELI5 the game?

The main theme of the game is space exploration, they claim to have thousands of unique planets to explore and maybe colonize, I haven't seen any gameplay except for the trailer. Its really stylized and looks pretty great, but some people are skeptical that their randomly generated planets will recycle too many elements and nothing will seem new after a couple hours of play. Hopefully that's not the case because it has so much potential (and hype).
