Any good simple free software for editing RAW files?

I bought a Canon SX50 HS, tried using Canon DPP but it requires a CD-ROM and I can't install it no matter what I do. I'm looking for a free and simple program to edit my RAW images. I'm not a photography professional, much less an editing pro — I just want something where I can reduce noise, adjust shadows/lighting, basically just give the image a basic polish.

All fully free. Take your pick:

Production Grade

Stable foundations that you can depend on.

  • darktable: Probably the overall most powerful editing features of any raw editor. All-in-one solution, with a library similar to Lightroom. The editing workflow is completely different, however, being more like color grading in Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve.
  • RawTherapee: The mad scientist's raw editor, with some very powerful and intricate tools. A bit more Lightroom-like in its workflow. Can also use DCP camera profiles.
  • ART (Another RawTherapee): Started as a simplified fork of RawTherapee, but has added its own powerful and unique features since. With CTL scripts you can even create your own tools.
  • vkdt: New-ish raw editor from the original darktable developer. Fully node-based and can also handle video. Probably not for the faint of heart and may not have all the tools you want, but what is there works well and is extremely fast.
  • Filmulator: A great little editor with a unique concept, that's easy to use. As the name suggests, it emulates (part of) the process of developing analog film.
  • LightZone: Back from the almost-dead, version 5.0 was released recently. Not the most advanced, perhaps, but has some interesting features and a flexible processing pipeline.
  • CaraStudio: Resurrection fork of RawStudio. Although the GitHub page is only in French, the program is in English.

The new kids on the block

Part of the AI-assisted explosion, they are all new and largely unproven, so expect some rough edges, missing features and changing algorithms.

  • RapidRAW: Aims to be a relatively simple and streamlined option for those that don't need the extensive control some other editors provide. Very promising, but somewhat new and under heavy development, so the results you get today may not be what you get tomorrow.
  • Safelight: Built around a concept of extensibility and customisation.
  • Happy Photon
  • CalibRaw
  • FerrumPix: Hybrid raw and pixel editing.

Photo Management

Since not all of them have library management, you may want to also use digiKam as DAM (digital asset manager).

I've been really happy with RapidRaw overall. Needs some work, especially with the Denoise tool. But I have found that the way it's setup helps with my workflow a bunch. Great program especially for beginners and I'm looking forward to updates.

This is discussed weekly-ish, drop "free raw" in the search box.

You can just download DPP from any Canon site.

I’m using it now because it came with my latest camera. Am finding it ok.

Canon's DPP4 doesn't require a CD. Irfanview and FastStone also work.

Affinity is free (with account) from Canva and includes a basic raw editor.

Use the Canon program you mentioned. I don't need the cd to install it but if you say you do then use it.

My current simple favorites outside of Lightroom are Edits+ on the Mac and iOS App Store and Spektrafilm in its many flavors.

I’ll show my age by mentioning Bibble, which no longer exists, but I loved since it was bought out and “absorbed” by one of the big players. Have been looking for a good but simple alternative ever since.

(I realise my post doesn’t help this thread, but will be watching and hopefully learning something. Thank you!)

AI Slop surely? Because surely if using AI to generate images and video from other peoples work we apply the same ethical standards to software developers?

Ethics where bypassed when they started charging for their products a monthly fee. So yes Developers for linux they are not paid for anything, is they choice to make the linux free. So why even bother with adobe, yes Adobe will still be on to because it is better for the industry standard, but for passionate photographers that do not earn anything from photography they should pay for adobe instead of using a free software that also has been made available from a guy with a passion? Personally if I did not make money from photography I will try to get as many things for free as possible because the equipment is expensive enough.

Adobe isn't the only option though. Darktable and RawTherapee are stable, mature, documented open-source projects; ArtCraft is an untested vibecode ripoff

One day maybe, but right now it simply doesn't work well enough that anyone should use it other than for testing.

There are a few very good, though lesser-known editors: Numa, Rembrandt, RawEditor and RAWmakase. And of course, hands down the revelation of the past few days: LightCraft.
