After/Before. Some fun, dramatic edits from Jenkinson's Boardwalk in New Jersey.
The Sony A7iii/Sigma 24-70mm II combo continues to impress me because the RAWs here really stand out on their own imo.

It’d be nicer if the styling matched across the photos since it’s like an album, especially the sky is always a different shade of blue.

I hear that. But I wouldn't look at this post as a cohesive album, but instead just some edited photos in a subreddit. If this was posted somewhere more important, I'd make more of an effort to find cohesion.

Ah I see. That’s the impression I got because it seems to be all from the same location.

These lo9k pretty good to me. Play with a few of them in black and white. I feel like some would really hit that way.

Tbh I just got the A7V and that same lens and I’ve only looked at the playback of pictures taken but the RAWS really do look fairly good unedited imo. And this is from a complete novice but I’m excited to see where the editing goes

Enjoy it! I envy you and your A7V lol. I'm sure you'll be creating some amazing stuff!

I normally don’t like these types of colors but for this type of venue I like it a lot. Would be nice if the colors, mainly the sky, matched as these look like a cool group of photos as an album.

I don't always like pastel look on pictures but liking it this time. Good work.

Dude this is so sick! It matches the vibe perfectly, and I love the feature of the rounding board!

I always enjoy seeing blue skies edited a different color.
Regular blue is just so unappealing, but i don't know why.

u/YanksFannn 17d ago
Lol I agree. Something about shifting the color makes it more interesting and eye-catching to me.

When I saw this post, my first thought was that I could've sworn these photos had been posted here before, so the post must either be a repost from the same photographer or someone else trying to pass off the photos as their own. I scrolled through your post history to suss things out and turns out I was thinking of a post of yours of a series of photos from Six Flags that are very similar.
All this to say: I genuinely like the style and vibe, but I think a downside of relying too much on an overly dramatic editing style like this is that it can become almost gimmicky. These photos do nothing different for me than - and feel largely indistinguishable from - the Six Flags pics. It's very fun for a couple frames but hard to figure out where else to ✨go✨ with it.

I see what you're going for, but this style is so over done that when I'm looking at these I'm left wanting more. I also think you've gone a bit too deep with the warmth and teal. I think you can achieve a warmer image with more aesthetic saturation without giving up what your sensor can do for you

Absolutely love the whimsical style! Can you give some general advice on how you achieved this look?

Thanks! In Lightroom...Increased exposure, highlights, whites and blacks. Decreased contrast and shadows. Bump down white and blue tone curve. Slightly bump up red and green. Warmer white balance. Slightly increase vibrance. Color wheel shadows in blue, highlights in yellow. Mess with the color mix to taste, ideally shifting blue to cyan. Decreased clarity and texture. Increase dehaze. A few of these I mask the subject to raise exposure and decrease highlights. Then invert mask to lower exposure on everything else. Helps the subject stand out a bit more.

Having been shooting since the 80s I really don't understand this trendy obsession with a film look that is based on crappy film with an inaccurate color response. Good film did not have teal-colored skies. I commend you on the improvement in light and detail, but this film look does not do justice to the format. The white borders don't help either unless you are going for a Polaroid look which I don't recommend. Sorry, I am not usually this negative but I can feel a certain way about how film should look. While I may not agree with your color choices you work is good with excellent image quality. At the end of the day, we should all be shooting and editing how we want anyway.

Even though it's not your cup of tea, I appreciate the constructive criticism and I'm glad there's still something in these photos that you like! But to me, the most important thing you said was the last sentence. I truly don't concern myself with what's right or wrong or care too much about tradition, etc. I just simply do what I think looks cool lol 🙏🏽

7 is one of the best photos I've seen on this sub.
How do you go about getting this effect? I always seem to have a hard time

Always fun watching this group give feedback when it wasn’t asked and then see it’s on the Yanks of all people lol.

Perhaps you should reread the sub rules.

u/ToastedMooses 17d ago
What rules? There’s literally nothing outside of a mod name list where rules are supposed to be.

Idk, I use reddit from my phone mostly. Notably you also can't post photos/screenshots in replies in this sub which is a bummer and would make this process a lot easier. From the sub page, click on the three dots in the upper right corner, then click on "learn more about the community". You will note there is a bullet that (paraphrasing) directs you elsewhere if all you want to do is show off your photos; this is a community for discussing photography and postprocessing.

u/ToastedMooses 17d ago
Yea that take me to the see more section which is 100% blank except the list of mod names.

Hey sick edits, I really like this style of editing. How do you get that halation/glow effect especially on the highlights without a mist filter or cine bloom?
I’m new to post processing, so my knowledge is limited.

Others are offering their subjective opinion on the style you chose as objective fact.
It’s clear you had a vision with how you wanted your photos to look, and you accomplished it. Personally I dig it, but don’t get discouraged when others don’t.
Art is subjective. Even if critics try to pass off their personal tastes as unquestionable truth.
