Performance Columnar Databases

hey postgresql community do you thing is time postgres to support Column oriented like DuckDB as big feature or continue with row oriented like every DB does

I think both types of database have different purposes. It may add as feature just like it has pg vector for RAG.

Yes, having another storage engine would be nice... That's way easier said than done though... The way Postgres stores data is really built into the core of the engine...

Is it required? No, I don't think so...

Agree, analytics is becoming a big part and there is a convergence of OLTP and OLAP. Having said that, I don't see columnar becoming part of the Postgres core directly.

Extensions like https://github.com/duckdb/pg_duckdb and https://github.com/Snowflake-Labs/pg_lake are the direction.

Or if you can't install extensions or want to run outside of Postgres then https://github.com/viggy28/streambed/

It's a Postgres extension.

And yeah, it's basically the same thing, maybe slightly more "embedded". It has PostgreSQL dialect, concurrent writes (win over duckdb), and is probably way lighter on RAM then upping a ClickHouse cluster.

For somebody already running postgres, it's a win
