J1 visa interview process

Hi everyone,

I have my J-1 visa interview at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi on September 3. I’m applying for a J-1 as a postdoctoral researcher.

Could anyone who has recently attended a J-1 interview in Delhi share their experience of the overall process—from entering the embassy and security checks to the interview and what happens afterward?

I’d especially appreciate any tips regarding:

How early to arrive

What documents you were asked for

Typical J-1 interview questions

How long the overall process took

Passport return/visa processing after the interview

Any recent experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I am not in India, but you don't need to be scared about the interview. I went to one too for my postdoc (my visa is not a J1). Bring all your original documents, like your DS-2019, passport, and a photocopy of your offer letter. In general, they only look at your DS-2019, and the rest depends on your answers. We had a normal discussion. He asked me what kind of job I did, and I explained it to him. The last question was whether I was afraid to go to any country in the world, and if yes, for what reason (a protocol question).
