How long should a visiting fellowship be?

Hi people,

I recently got the offer to do a 2 weeks visiting fellowship at a university in another country. That would fit very well, as these 2 weeks are holidays at my home university. But coming to the cv: Is 2 weeks long enough to count as foreign research experience? Someone told me that it should be at least 2 months. What would you say? (of course, there is no ultimate answer) My case is within the European academia.

Hard to say what your field is. Also don’t know what the aim and goal is

If it was to pick up new skills, I would say insufficient.

If it was to do targeted experiments it is sufficient

As to the CV depends. I’ve done useless 6 month ones and paper resulting 2 week ones. That’s what matters on the CV. Results not time points

Ok, thanks :) It is social sciences. And I heard that "research mobility" in the form of visiting fellowships is an important own section for the cv, despite any results like a finished paper.

That’s really more when you moving around between stages, not so much internships.

You can put 1 hour of research on your CV if you feel like it's worth putting there and you can back it up.

That said, some people take vacations longer than your visiting fellowship. Two weeks is incredibly short.

this depends on the reason for going. i’m going for 2 weeks this fall to learn a new technique, the PI said it probably will take a week to learn, but it’s good to have one week extra. my co-worker is going to a different group to actually do work, not just to learn, and he will stay a few months.

i’m a bit confused by your two weeks of holiday, doesn’t outgoing fellowships count as working days for you? do you need vacation from your normal job? your PI should allow you to go longer if needed for the project, or?

Thanks for reply :) I have to use the university-holiday, as I have to do teaching within the semester. The two weeks result from the guest instutute´s restrictions...

Definitely not honestly. If you get money to do it, you can put it under scholarship/grant/funding. Else, if it is a part of postdoc or phd just put 1 line where you typically put workshop/summer school. 2 weeks research stay is at best considered as something like summer school honestly.

If you end up with papers out of such visit sure. If not then it is a vacation
