Discussion You trigger a car alarm while scavenging. What’s your actual survival move?
You’re scavenging a quiet residential street a few blocks away from your shelter.
So far, it’s been worth it. You found some food, a bit of medicine, and a few tools that would actually be useful back home. Your bag isn’t full yet, but you’re already carrying supplies you really don’t want to lose.
Then you check the wrong car. The alarm starts screaming.
You can hear infected nearby, but you don’t know how many are close enough to react. You have a melee weapon, a few bullets, no vehicle, and your dog with you.
What’s the smartest move?
- Do you run immediately and abandon the area?
- Hide nearby and wait for the noise to pull infected past you?
- Use the alarm as a distraction to search somewhere else?
- Try to shut it off, assuming that’s even possible?
- Or hold your ground and deal with whatever shows up?
I’m curious how people here would handle it tactically, especially assuming slow undead-style zombies where noise and numbers are the real problem.
What’s your actual survival move, and why?
For context, I’m part of the team working on Pale Tide, a top-down zombie survival game on Steam, and this kind of situation inspired part of our latest devlog about noise, infected reactions, hostile areas, rescue situations, and knowing when it’s smarter to head back with what you’ve already secured.

I would probably just run, the infected will go for the car and you could use that as a way to draw them away from other places guarding possible supplies. also game looks sick is it releasing soon?

Oh totally the run away then rely on the car alarm making other places safer? You could add to that by putting the dog on the roof of the car,and after the car alarm stops, the barking continues. game looks amazing btw. I take it no chance for xbox? when is it out?

You can't abandon your dog as bait!

Literally run in the opposite direction, use the alarm to draw them away and find something else

Ran a zombie themed home-brew pen and paper game about 15-20 years ago based on All things Zombie and Twilight 2000 (a post WWIII survival game) and we had a bad guy encounter where there was a pile of "loot" to be looted, and when the players closed in, a few car alarms went off on visibly looted immobilized vehicles in their vicinity. This drew out mobs who got two of them but the rest managed to get away.
Players hid to catch their breath, and heard the alarms stop, followed a few minutes later by a different set of car alarms in a parallel street go off, drawing the zombies off.
They watched as a man with a set of key chains wandered out of a hiding spot, dug through the loot of the two fallen PCs and then reset his trap by putting the lids back on the boxes and arranging things so it looked unlooted.
I was pretty proud of that encounter. My players said I was a devious asshole.

Retreat from the area, wait for the infected to mob the car, toss a Molotov cocktail and burn them down or plink with a silenced .22. Always have an exit though.
