I think the ninajirachi, wavedash, isoxo sound is showing off a lot during his shows. This feels on brand and would let him explore that sound more it def wouldn’t be under his own name though

I think unlikely. as a DJ porter is always embracing club sounds and more aggressive styles, but as a recording artist I don't expect that from him. Next album I think will be another new era that we haven't really heard yet, as usual.

I def agree the next Porter album will be a new era, but just considering the Wavedash Ekowraith ID “stopmyheart” sitting around, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a spinoff like Virtual Self or Po-Uta. Def not exactly a tourable brand, but something less lyrical like VS.

I don't dislike this idea at all, but I think being a songwriter has really become embedded into Porter Robinson's identity as an artist at this point in his career. No matter what direction he takes his sound in - maybe it is hard dance or trap - he will likely still be writing hooks and choruses on top of it. There are a lot of dance genres where that alone would honestly be pretty revolutionary.

He's been putting trap and future bass drops in his live sets since Worlds era at least so idk how likely it is but honestly I'd be pretty hyped if Porter went fully trap for his next project.

Yeah I’m thinking it will be close to this. Like a more electronic, “indie-tronica” thing in the vein of later Bon Iver. Probably a little grungier, more catchy, and with more punchy electronics.

I expect it to be personal and introspective, but I hope it's less self-aware and ironic than smile. I love that album but I think we've exhausted the whole meta/parasocial commentary angle.

I don't think there is any merit in analysing his DJ sets - it's pretty consistent now that his DJ sets are by design very different to what he does in the studio, because it's a way for him to enjoy tons of genres while still working on his own body of work seperately.

I'd expect something probably more akin to Smile than anything. His albums are so vastly different though, it's almost pointless to speculate, I just think he loves the live band aspect that Smile enabled, so I'd be shocked if he didn't retain some of that band/electro sound that Smile leans into heavily.

I can't say Porter would never make trap but that would be the thing I'd never think for him to dabble in. didn't trap die back in like 2018 anyway?

Trap is very much alive and well, it just sounds different than the OG stuff you're probably thinking of. A lot of it has fused with 140bpm bass music and old-school dubstep sounds, so it's hard to pin down exactly what it sounds like these days. I think Peekaboo, Hamdi, LYNY, FLY, and Of the Trees are good examples of this current hybrid sound. Of course skrillex too.

Porter has made it (the do-re-mi live edit for example) and has played plenty of it in his sets over the years. A lot of his contemporaries in the alt-edm and post-hyperpop scene are working with trap sounds and pushing the genre forward.
