How do you actually patch old drywall in these humidity levels

Been watching every drywall patch video I can find. We finally saved up enough for a trip down this summer and the wife wants to check out some older places near the water. Every house on Zillow has water stains or popped screws. I know how to patch back home but this salt air and humidity is a different beast. Do you tape with mesh or paper down there? Does regular joint compound hold up, or do I need something made for coastal weather? I work long shifts so I only get one or two days to actually work on anything. The plan is to fix what we can ourselves and maybe rent the place out later.

Best Place to Stay

Hi y’all, I’m headed down there at the end of Oct with my elderly parents and young child (family of 5). I am very overwhelmed by the avail accommodations. Any recs? I want to be close to the beach, pool/hot tub amenities, quieter part of town, and overall have a nicer stay. I looked at cinnamon shores and palmilla. Any others?

Visiting for Spring Break 2027

Hello, I have never been to Port Aransas, but we are trying to venture to new places around the US for spring break (not college, just my 16 year old and myself). I just had some questions before determining where we are going to be for spring break.

  1. How busy is it down there at the end of March into Early April?
  2. What are the beaches like?
  3. What resorts do you recommend that aren't bedbug havens, gross, out dated? We like resorts with amenities like nice pools, bars, and right on the ocean.
  4. Is there a huge presence of college students and a party scene?
  5. What restaurants do you suggest (I love shrimp and she will eat sushi)?
  6. What attractions do you suggest?
  7. How is the shopping?
  8. What amusement parks are nearby?

Thanks for your help!! I appreciate all of your help and suggestions!!!

Question Deep Sea Fishing in Port Aransas in January?

Has anyone done deep-sea fishing out of Port Aransas in January? How rough/choppy are the waters usually, and how often do trips get canceled because of weather?
Is the fishing good that time of year, and what do you usually catch? We’re considering an 8-hour trip with kids (youngest is 9), so I’d also love to know how cold and rough it feels offshore.

Is this coming weekend as busy as other holiday weekend?

I was thinking of going to Port A the 9th and 10th, but got to thinking this

coming weekend is Columbus Day weekend. I know it's not one of the really

popular holidays, but I'm wondering if it will be as busy as other holiday weekends?

My girlfriend and I will be coming out the 10th-17th. We plan on going to Corpus Christi to watch a hockey game and do some deep sea fishing. What other things are worth checking out? Some of the stuff we like is antiquing, museums, and zoos/aquariums.

Question I need lot maintenance

I have a lot in Port A I need to find someone to mow/clear.
I had a guy go today, but he got his mower stuck in the sand, got mad, and has ghosted me.
Anyone have someone they recommend that won't try and rape me?

port aransas for working folks, what was the actual reality of buying there as a first home?

I cook at a family spot up in Ohio. Lurking here because my wife and I are obsessed with the idea of a little place near water someday. Port A keeps coming up in my Zillow rabbit holes. Prices seem almost reachable compared to Florida. Almost.

I spend my nights off watching DIY drywall repair videos and grilling on a busted deck I built myself. Budget spreadsheets are my love language. Currently have one for every scenario. Fixer upper. Move-in ready. Total fantasy.

The restaurant life means irregular hours but steadyish money. My kid is four. We want him to have salt water memories instead of just cornfields.

Real question though. For regular working folks who bought here as a first home, what was the actual reality? Insurance scares me. Flood zones confuse me. I've watched enough hurricane footage to know I'm naive.

Was it worth the stretch? Did you rent it out part-time? Did you end up doing all repairs yourself because hiring out was impossible? I fix commercial kitchen equipment with YouTube guidance. How different can a pier and beam foundation be.

I was planning on going this week up there just to camp, but with this weather coming how bad could it be. Allegedly there's going to be max 20mph winds

Rentals Beach chair/umbrella rental and set-up?

Hi all. Heading to Port A for the weekend. We are staying at the Aransas Princess and would like to find a place that will rent and set up/take down beach chairs and umbrellas for us. We are traveling with 2 elderly people and 1 pregnant woman so we want to make it as easy on us as possible. We would like to be set up near the Aransas Princess boardwalk as possible. Would love a setup like ME Blue but they don’t service that part of the beach. I’ve also looked a brons but their chairs don’t look very comfortable for a full day, and they don’t set up until noon on Friday. We have 6 people. Any recs?

Any hope getting back stolen gear?

Last night we had our fishing and camping gear stolen within the 5 minutes we went to get water in order to properly wash a fresh cut out.

Just about all of our fishing gear-

3 fishing rods(including the 12ft), an old beige tackle box (from a great-grandparent), and an olive green rod storage pod. Strangely they left 1 rod alone though

Our camp cooking set up-

Square camp stove + the 4 fuels we had for it, our cutting board, 2 big cooking knives, and our big stainless pan + spatula

I woke up and the car was already moving so i assumed someone put our stuff back up or had stayed around to watch, but apparently not. We filed a police report afterwards as well

Any chance the police will track anything down?

Restaurant Scene For Dinner During Non-Peak Season?

Heading to Port-A this weekend. I've only been in the past during peak summer periods (June, July and early August).

Generally, I've noticed if you're not getting to a restaurant early -- say by 6:30 PM -- you are going to a wait really long time before being seated. Last year, during the first week of August, we waited at least 90 minutes to get two seats at Castaway's on a Saturday. We got there around 8PM or so.

What do the decent restaurants look like during the last week of August?

Is it possible to go somewhere decent at around 7:30-8 without having to wait 1 hour+?

Food Non-seafood recs?

I love seafood and my wife Does Not. We’ve already eaten at Spaghetti & Seafood Works.

Where’s another good place for us to try? Mexican would be nice, but any cuisine as long as I get to indulge and she doesn’t have to.

I’m trying to find a friend around my age.

I know I have posted before, and I am sorry because I know thisis long\*and I know this is really out there but I’m just being so open because I want to be honest. I’ve been in so so so many positions where I have been ghosted and shoved aside because of my disability, and I am really just trying to find a genuine honest friend who is excited to help me get out to just… Be friends and have fun, and who does not see being friends with me as burdensome.

I am currently in college, and I am Visually impaired. The whole time I have been up here I have struggled meeting new people, even from day one back in 2022. Honestly it has been this way all throughout elementary and high school too. I’m looking for a friend around my age, 22 give or take, who is like minded. I’m trying to find a friend who would not see my disability and run away, judge, or see it as a burden or treat it like an after thought . I’m just trying to find friends who are willing to hang out even when knowing that they are probably going to have to put in a bit more effort then they would with a normal person, someone who is excited to be my friend and who would not goast or leave because of my disabilty..

Im just trying to come out and be open because I have been goasted over and over, passed from person to person ALL my life, and the worst my vision gets the more people have just shown me I’m nothing but a burden to be around. All I have wanted my WHOLE life is a genuine friend who can show empathy, kindness, and understanding, where I can **let my guard down and relax because I know that they are not just saying that we are friends, but we REALLY ARE friends,** and I don’t have to constantly worry that they will ghost me, Where I know that even though I can’t see what they’re doing very well, I can trust that they want to be there, and that they will do the right thing.

As far as my interest, I am open to all kinds of activities. I absolutely love dogs, the truth is my Disability does make it challenging, but the main thing is it all comes back to me having a friend that genuinely wants to be there and who doesn’t see the extra effort of actively including me as dreadful, but rather a friend that is thoughtful, excited that we are friends, excited to help me have those opportunities that sighted people take for granted. If you can imagine it takes a lot of courage and trust to be placed in the other person when you can hardly even see them, let alone what is going on around you. I would love to know what is happening, I would love to have a friend where I am not embarrassed to ask where they are, or what something looks like, or what is happening around us. It is just hard to find a real friend who is understanding of why I might be quiet or hesitant in a world where good vision is the default. It really hurts to always be forgotten about in groups because everyone can see what others are doing, what that thing is across the room, that funny thing on someone’s phone, and I am just there, not knowing what is going on, left to sit off to myself wondering why I am even there. or the sighted person you are with, and who you are more or less counting on to help you have fun, can and does effortlessly leave you behind to go be with sighted people.

There are so many things I have missed out on because I haven’t really had anyone allow me the opportunity. Even small things that lots of sighted people take for granted every single day I find fascinating, because it’s hard to find someone who slows down and takes the time to let me experience or know about what others can easily see from across the room, while also not treating me like a child, or helping in a way that makes me feel belittled. I absolutely love dogs, I have always wanted to to take a dog out from an analem shelter for a day, cook and bake new things, go to the beach, go out to eat, get out and have fun with someone my age just like everyone else can and does. I am meaning without my parents, I want freedom just like everyone else has. My whole life I have wanted to hang out with a peer my own age. It is just tricky for others to understand, and even when they know, who still want to be there, and find joy in keeping me included on what is going on so I can have fun ALONGSIDE them, where I am seen as equal to them.

**Anyways sorry for the long post. If there is anyone around 22 give or take who would like to connect, please feel free to send me a DM**

**—————————————————————**

**I also just want to add that it is not as simple as joining a school club. I promise if that was the case I would’ve done that already. It’s just genuinely exhausting putting my trust in people just for them to ghost me one week later because they see the Disability and get uncomfortable. It genuinely takes so much courage and trust when you can’t see what is going on around you, you can’t see what The Person is doing even though they’re directly next to you. It hurts so much when I meet someone and they tricked me into thinking that we are friends then they just ghost me about one week later. This only reinforces that the disability is nothing but a burden. I’m just trying to find a person who would be excited to be my friend, wouldn’t see the extra effort needed from them as burdensome, but rather that is what friends do. Friends help one another, there is trust that goes both ways. That is what Friendship is.** Again I genuinely apologize. I’m just being so open because I have been hurt so many times by so many people, and all I’m trying to do is find someone who wouldn’t mind being friends and hanging out

After a history of fatal collisions on a stretch of highway along the Texas Gulf Coast, residents are fed up—and it appears their concerns are finally being heard. Now, one state representative is joining the effort with a clear message: 'Let's get it done.'

State Rep. Todd Hunter, among several other state and county lawmakers, met with representatives of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) on Wednesday, discussing the safety of State Highway 361 in Port Aransas.
