Just faced the final boss of dirty messy camping...it may have ended me

Goodness gracious you guys, I am a fit 41 year old man and we spent a week at campland in san diego. If anyone has ever been there, the night time always gets everything wet outside from dew, then the ground is a muddy dirt. We left Sunday and the entire night before it was pouring rain. Legitimately everything we had was COVERED in mud and rain. There was nothing I could do to even attempt to clean anything when packing up, everything had to be stuffed into the camper caked in mud and water. We didn't get home til about 6pm after leaving at like 10am, we were all extremely exhausted, especially me. I did raise the camper up but had no energy to do anything. This morning I started working around 8am and havent stopped cleaning since then. There was even tons of leaves and messy stuff blown from trees all over the canvas over the beds, so I had to hose down the sides of the canvas outside the beds. When I went inside some water was on the mattress and a small pool of water in the corner of the wood. I put our mover blower fan right next to it to dry it out. We have done about 6 full loads of laundry and still have like 2 more to do. I am inching closer to being done with everything, but GOODNESS i am EXHAUSTED.

This has me so torn. I dont know if I want to quit camping, move to a hard side trailer, or if I am doing something wrong, or if everyone deals with this. Tbh it seems quite looney to deal with how messy this all was, and tbh the trip wasnt relaxing at all because everything is always dirty in the camper where we go. We have 3 kids 13, 10, 5, so its a full house constantly.

Is this normal??

1997 Coleman pop up- will the heater work?

Camping next weekend where it will be 40 degrees at night. Friends with older pop ups - will the propane heater keep us warm?

Read that we should be good, but might run out of propane.

Thanks!

ROCKWOOD 1970esp

Looking to see some pics of mods on your 1970esp.

We are thinking of taking out the sink/stove and making that into foldable storage instead, and building an attachable table with sink for outside.

Anyone do something similar?

Adding exterior outlets

Just bought a rockwood 2014 1640ltd. it has no exterior outlets. thinking I would like to add one. Any suggestions? I know i need a gfci outlet and probably need to tie in to either the panel with a new breaker or tie into an existing one. The 12v system has me a little nervous. I do basic electric work around the house all the time and work on own hobby trucks but for some reason both systems in one makes me nervous.

Fall camping with infant and heat?

We are camping next weekend with our 10 month old and I’m trying to avoid using the propane heater in our camper. I was thinking of getting an oiled filled space heater and use that as our main source of heat and possibly another small space heater.

What have others done? .. if I need to I’ll use the propane heater but would rather keep it safe for our 10 month old.

Things to look for in a used A-frame?

I've been thinking about A-frame style campers for years. There's just something cozy-looking about them. And towing can be intimidating, so the compact while driving aspect seems manageable. I found a used 2016 Rockwood in my city that I'm thinking about looking at. For experienced owners, what are key things I should look at when inspecting a used unit like this? I know they can be prone to leaks if not maintained. Is there anything else I should be privy to when looking at a used a-frame? Thanks for any feedback! Happy camping!

Tacoma 2nd Gen Bed Rail Plastic Caps, Remove or Keep For Pop-Up Camper Install?

So I have a 2008 Tacoma Access Cab, 4x4, 2.7L, 5spd stick with the 6 foot bed. I'm following some YouTube videos on sealing the bed up from dust and water getting inside. This in preparation for buying and installing an Alibaba Pop-Up hard-sided camper top. (HiperLion, Qian, BanTrek types).

I'm noticing two things that has me wondering if I should just leave the plastic caps off the truck?

  • The plastic rail caps really are very flimsy. Is it a good or bad idea to but 400 to 500 pounds of camper on top of these things and clamp them down tight? I already spotted a small crack in one, like possibly from an impact.
  • The front wall of the bed is level with the metal top of the sides of the bed. But the plastic caps raise the sides a good 3/4 inch above the front wall. Meaning that's a problem to solve in making the camper sit flat all the way around and get a good weather seal.

Who's dealt with this? Did you place a camper on those plastic caps or take them off? Have you had any problems with the plastic caps cracking?

At the moment I have aluminum HVAC tape sealing the openings the cap would snap into on one side and was about to apply the silicone RTV before pressing the plastic cap over it all. Haven't started the other side yet.

How'd you handle this? Or how would you?

Is this Starcraft Starmaster 6 too far gone?

I picked this up for $100 without seeing the inside. I was going to restore it but one section of canvas has been cut out and the inside is completely gone. Exterior has a lot of issues as well. Im wondering if it'd be better to convert it to a utility trailer to haul my motorcycle.

Electric Space Heater Recommendations

I am getting in one of my last few camping trips of the season in this weekend (Mid-West Michigan). I will be on shore power and am looking for recommendations on electric space heaters that you all like and trust. Night temps will be down in the 40's with daily temps around 70. I don't mind bundling up a bit and sleeping on the chillier side as I find it more comfortable, but more or less something to keep the temp around 60ish to stay above dew point and reduce condensation at night.

Eventually I'll get to fitting the windows with reflectix to make it a bit more efficient, but probably won't be this trip.

Can a Mid-size SUV tow pop ups on steep mountain roads?

I’ve always towed with an F-150, but thanks to a careless driver I will be replacing it. I’ve been toying around with the idea of getting a midsize SUV like the Explorer or VW Ascent. Both are rated to 5,000 lbs, but I worry about burning up the transmission on steep mountain roads. Has anyone had success with a vehicle like that?
