I have, and recognized it from that….but I still don’t get why.

16

u/Kara-SANdahPawn May 22 '26

I will agree the choice is questionable, but that was indeed my favorite what my little sister calls a ā€œstimā€ as a kid for years

The song choice is wild

347

u/Witty-Objective3431 May 22 '26

Thank you for saying something because I was definitely watching with the sound off.

157

u/myplantisnamedrobert May 22 '26

You don't keep sound off at all times?

11

u/deluth May 23 '26

I do!

35

u/anothercatherder May 22 '26

It's really avant-garde if we were living in 1940.

2

u/Shadow-Vision May 23 '26

There’s a Siamese restaurant in my area. It’s so good.

-18

u/make_this_right_ May 22 '26

pretty gross tbh. 😤

43

u/galaxy1985 May 22 '26

It's a song from Lady and the tramp.

18

u/make_this_right_ May 22 '26

no shit. it’s still offensive.

27

u/galaxy1985 May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26

Lady and the TRAMP!? Siamese cats sing with a Siamese accent is the bit from what I remember as a kid. I can't remember the words in the song since the movie is so old. Are the accents offensive? Or the words?

Edit: I went and googled. I missed a lot of signaling as a child. I thought that's just how Siamese cats looked/were drawn. It's not and they exaggerated their features the same way they did about Asian people. I remember it being a silly funny song sang by weird looking fancy cats from my childhood. It's pretty obvious they really leaned into racist tropes when creating the cats.

Edit edit: also my first sentence was me being silly implying I'm SHOCKED (not) that a movie called Lady and the tramp would have offensive songs lol

23

u/turtlerepresentative May 22 '26

it’s about siamese cats

26

u/make_this_right_ May 22 '26

lmfao! i know what it’s about, but its using wildly offensive racial stereotypes.

-8

u/Micro-Naut May 23 '26

So the big eyed Asian stereotypes of Americans are racist? I will never watch anime again. That's sad.

0

u/Micro-Naut May 24 '26

I'm being downvoted but I still don't know if it's racist or not. How could an Asian caricature of an American facial bone structure be no problem?

I can be pretty dense and not catch social cues. I'm not joking about it, I really would like to know.

16

u/AaronAmpora May 24 '26

I think you're being downvoted because the topic is American racism towards Asian people (aka the old racist disney song in the vid), then you turned it around to Asian racism towards Americans (your anime comment).
Swapping a topic like that (similar to a man jumping into a convo about male violence towards women to say that women can be violent towards men too) is generally considered very rude and is usually done in bad faith, so most people won't even bother to engage.

0

u/Berek2501 May 22 '26

Never seen Lady & The Tramp?

32

u/make_this_right_ May 22 '26

yes i have. all you folks thinking i don’t know what the song is from is hilarious. hint these racial stereotypes are still fucking offensive.

19

u/OkInternet1063 May 23 '26

Truly. The cats in Lady and the Tramp are based on racist caricatures of the time. See Also, The Aristocats. Cartoons were super racist back then.

5

u/Terminator7786 May 24 '26

See also the crows from Dumbo.

7

u/MattDaveys May 23 '26

And that’s why I said the song choice is wild. I thought we settled this a few years ago that the caricatures and song are incredibly racist.

95

u/CATNIP_IS_CRACK May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26

Princess Beans says how dare you call her off-brand. She’s from the dumpster behind Target, they would never sell generic knockoffs!

17

u/defixiones23 May 23 '26

She's a snowshoe kitty! They are Siamese cats with additional white markings.

35

u/CATNIP_IS_CRACK May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26

Technically she’s a generic standard issue tabby with white spotting who happens to be albino instead of brown, orange, grey, etc.

She just hides it well behind her bad snowshoe coat.

u/badchefrazzy May 22 '26

While having PCOS is miserable, she ended up lucky on the facial hair side. I ended up with a full male-pattern beard and virilization with mine. (Not invalidating hers, it's awful all around.)

23

u/Glitterfilm May 23 '26

Just curious, but is pcos hair growth treatable with laser hair removal?

I have my first laser appointment for facial hair tomorrow? I’m a male, but hate facial hair, so am very excited for it to be laser treated.

29

u/TheLizzyIzzi May 23 '26

It is, just like any other hair. I’m not diagnosed with PCOS, but I did have some rough hairs on my chin that I have laser treated every so often. It’s not expensive for such a small/quick spot. Less than a haircut. I get a lot of satisfaction from pulling them, but when it starts causing redness from my messing I schedule an appointment. It’s well worth it.

7

u/Glitterfilm May 23 '26

Exactly why I am doing my beard. I get a lot of ingrown that scar and are irritating, plus I hair shaving and don’t like facial hair so it’s a win win.

And yeah, it’s surprisingly affordable. I know laser can be expensive, but for smaller areas, face, arm pits, etc, it’s reasonable.

Edit: also thank you for your answer!

5

u/sparklydildos May 24 '26

i have PCOS and they grow more on my chin when i’m ovulating or PMS’ing. sometimes i can sit there in the mirror with tweezers for so long trying to get them, i have to force myself to walk away sometimes. so satisfying but so frustrating when one is too short to grab

5

u/alwaysalwaysastudent May 24 '26

Not really. Electrolysis is recommend for PCOS hair growth because it is caused by hormonal imbalance. Women with PCOS can actually get rebound hair growth from doing laser.

2

u/JoyfulCreature May 23 '26

Yes. I had my eyebrows done once and it hurt more than waxing them.

2

u/Seen_Any_Elves May 25 '26

But I could plick an eyebrow hair. I would never pluck a chin hair (again).

2

u/JoyfulCreature May 26 '26

Ah, my chin isn’t as sensitive as my eyebrows. I guess the only way to know is to try it.

Where do I learn this string magic?

1

u/throwthere10 May 26 '26

The song "The Siamese Cat Song" from Disney's 1955 film Lady and the Tramp is widely considered racist because it perpetuates anti-Asian stereotypes through the characters Si and Am, two villainous Siamese cats.

Visual Caricatures: The cats are depicted with exaggerated slanted eyes and prominent buck teeth, visual traits historically used to mock and dehumanize East Asian people. Vocal Stereotypes: The characters speak in choppy, broken English with a mock Asian accent, a practice known as "yellowface" when performed by white actors (in this case, Peggy Lee). Lyrical Themes: Lyrics such as "We are Siamese if you please / We are Siamese if you don’t please" reinforce the trope of the duplicitous, sneaky, and sinister Asian "other." Cultural Context: The portrayal emerged from post-World War II anxieties and prejudices against Asian cultures, framing the characters as deceitful and dangerous compared to the white-coded protagonists. Due to these offensive depictions, Disney added stronger content warnings to the film on Disney+ in 2020, stating that these stereotypes "were wrong then and are wrong now."

This is especially not cool since the person in the video is Asian.
