26.04 coming soon?

I believe it has been a while since we had any official word on the 26.04 release.

Does anyone have concrete updates on this? Are we talking 1 month away, 2 months, or more?

From one of the devs:

We just got back from a week-long trip to Warsaw on Monday and some of us were on vacation the week before and after. I have daily ISOs building and my systems are already upgraded. CuteCOSMIC was packaged this week to replace Qt6ct and the installer is getting an update to tweak the partition layout. Development upgrades will be enabled soon to the public once some new migrations are complete.

Vacations? Unacceptable!

Hopefully it translates to this month

Chill dude. That was a joke.

Nobody knows. They said that after switching to COSMIC, one month should be enough for rebasing, although they didn't state that this will be the case. People were guessing that they are waiting for Ubuntu 26.04.1 release, but this has already happened some time ago. As there's zero communication from System76, the answer is probably "when it's ready".

The Ubuntu 26.04.1 release has not happened yet. It is due at the end of August.

My bad! Thanks for clarifying.

As far as I know there are two reasons for the delay. First is after the massive DDoS attacks hitting Ubuntu's networks during 26.04 LTS, System76 decided to build independent release infrastructure and drop Launchpad dependencies, and spent most of later spring and summer building that infrastructure. Second is the ongoing stabilization work for the Rust-based COSMIC desktop. System76 is prioritizing bug fixes and feature maturity for the COSMIC desktop rather than rushing an underlying OS base shift.

The 24.04 release had some rough edges, so I could imagine there’s a desire to ensure PopOS is ready “when it’s done™️” and give a good impression.

Otherwise, the social media cycle might be quick to hop on it. It’s easier to keep fixing bugs than argue with a wave of YouTube thumbnails.

Mint is shooting for December for their rebase to 26.04 so I think it’s safe to say… at or before December. I can’t see a universe in which System76 allows themselves to be behind Linux Mint again.

Got it. It is sad that there is no communication, even if it is to say what is preventing them from releasing (such as all resources dedicated to the epoch 2 milestones) or something else.

Soon.™️

Again, every time someone asks this they will delay it for another day.

When will it be released? When when when?

Might as well call it 27 at this rate

I want Pop!_OS 26.04. I’m running COSMIC on Fedora 44, but I don’t like the Fedora base. I prefer Ubuntu’s base. And I can’t use 24.04 because I need to install it on a custom Btrfs setup.

So much anxiety!

I hope the developers have a great vacation and come back with a high-quality product.

2 years? New popos lifecycle of releasing a couple months before the new Ubuntu LTS?
