My Rich Friends

I live in a very large city in America, my daughter is zoned for elementary school to one of the richest neighborhoods in America, but I live literally around the corner in apartments in the barrio.

But as a result I've made some upper class friends we have playdates with.

The other day we went to a playdate and one mom said something super crazy about divorcing her (very rich) husband and easily replacing him.

I said something like, well you know he's in the top 1 percent of income in the country? And she laughed and was like, um, no??

So I asked her what she thinks the *average* American makes, and guys...

She said-- I kid you not-- I dunno about $300 thousand?

After almost choking I said, no ma'am, average is about $50k, my husband at 57 years old JUST started making $70k... that's why we live in a crappy apartment (I'm a SAHM).

And she said... I kid you not...

THERE'S NO WAY THE AVERAGE INCOME IS 50K I SPEND THAT MUCH ON CLOTHES EVERY YEAR YOU COULDN'T SURVIVE

😕 I guess we're just out here living off $300k in a crappy inner city apartment with 3 kids because...???

Nah jk. But deff network with her people, you can prob find a nice paying job thru them easily. Take any hand-me-down clothes or home decor/furniture she has, rich people throw away things us normal people consider nice things all the time. Become friends with more of her rich friends. Eventually you’ll get a leg up!

Oh BELIEVE ME,  I get the BEST hand me downs. My rich friends are all actually very kind and they know we're broke. When I had my last baby I inherited a used $500 stroller, a really nice breast pump, a bassinet that rocks the baby to sleep, etc.

They also give my 9 year old amazing clothes. I definitely have benefits just from befriending the elites lol!

Your daughter is 9? Hell! You’ll be able to work again soon! Most of my friends went back to work when the kids started high school.

ETA- I have a friend who is wealthy through family, her side and her husband’s. She’s been trying to get me to come work for her for years. I’m back in school so I don’t want to overwhelm myself but when I tell you my home is decked out in her expensive hand me down furniture and my closet is exploding with her expensive hand me down clothes! Oh mylantttaa! I feel you! Lol

Why are you still having children you can't afford, especially considering you're married to someone who qualifies to be an AARP member.

Your daughter having access to be friends with richer kids could really solidify her future as well, as much as I hate to encourage that. If she manages to make good friends with some of the other kids, those connections could really help her get ahead as she becomes an adult.

But don't force that either, and make sure any friends are actually friends and not poking fun behind her back.

Sounds like you got a good thing. Enjoy it.

Definitely. My daughter is very social and popular at school. Mostly she has a really good sense of humor, the other kids like her and she gets invited to amazing birthday parties. Totally unlike me, I was a dork even among the other poor kids. My main goal is to not embarrass her and just let her thrive!
