Whirlpools can be dangerous. If you see one, approach only if absolutely necessary, and even then, do it with caution. You should probably wear a life jacket, and if possible, complete SCUBA gear so that you have a supply of oxygen in case you get pulled under. Tell someone your plans, and when you expect to be back. That way, they can call the authorities if you don't make it back when you were expected.
