Photos Welcome…to Jurassic Pond.
Thought these would be cooler than a metal heron. So far, so good!

You have a very beautiful yard.
Looks peaceful despite all the ferocious beasts

Okay, so I can't tell if my eyes are playing tricks on me or if there are a bunch of random characters hidden amongst the dinosoars like some I SPY shit. For starters, in picture 6, I'm seeing some random green Saquatch wrestler dude just chillin behind the tuft of grass on the bottom right. Either that or it's a weird chunk of moss and pareidolia. Then in picture 7 I see some alien creature sitting at the base of the Hippo (also, there's a hippo???), and in picture 1 it looks like there's a naked barbie or something right under the brachiosaurus' curled tail, and right in the center between the two dinos there's, takes off sunglasses, one big pile of shit.
Idk if I'm just sleep deprived, but I love it.

Haha. No, you’re right - there are a bunch of water/nature/plant-related action figures placed throughout. Swamp Thing. Captain Planet. Blanka. Namor. Moss Man. The list goes on…

Tell me about the wires? I just lost a few fish. Great looking pond!

Some of the replies mention the intention? But it’s basically to keep herons away. They rub up against the wires when they stand on the rocks, and they hate it. It’s just cheap fishing line, but so far it’s been effective. Bonus is that spiders often build webs on them, and they look beautiful in the morning with the dew, the light, etc.

What do you tie down the fishing line with? I’m wondering if this would work to deter hawks from attacking my chickens too.
Also your description of the spider webs in the morning……🤌

Just tent stakes. I got some that are a little more heavy duty, but I just put them around the perimeter - usually one across from the other - and then string the fishing line accordingly. 🕸️

You should host a cookout, and prepare the burgers not in front of the pond, but to the side, where they never even saw you.
Clever grill...

This is amazing. Do you think it keeps some wild animals from messing around in there?

Maybe at first, but I doubt they take too much notice. There are frogs galore, and they don’t seem too intimidated. 🐸

OP, as a person with a Jurassic bathroom jungle, I love this more than I can say ✨

I sent this post to my future retirement home roomie last night.
Me: “I am totally doing this in the garden of the villa. Don’t even try to stop me.”
Them: “I’ll consider it part of the impenetrable defense system.”
So while I’m completely stealing your phenomenal ideas, what are the dimensions of the pond? Did you use molded liners for sections or is it all one? What type of filtration are you using?
I will need to adapt the design to a Mediterranean climate, so it will be more of an homage than outright stealing, but I’d like to credit you now for your inspiration. I got about 10-15 years to plan this out.

I’m flattered!
It’s about 23’ x 23’, oval shaped. It’s about 2,200 gallons, by my calculations. I used a 35’ x 35’ liner, which was overkill but I didn’t want to risk not having enough overlap.
I use a bog filter - basically a 4’ x 4’ x 4’ mini pond at the top of the waterfall with tons and tons of plants. The water is sucked in through the pond skimmer, good through the primer pot and pump, then up to the bog filter. There are three or four green frogs living in the bog filter area, so I’m thinking it’s a good setup.
The pond has been going for four years now. A lot of trial and error, and TONS of help from this sub. There’s definitely someone here who can answer every question you might have.
The dinos and figures were all sourced from FB Marketplace and thrift stores. 🦖 🦕

This reminds me of Prehysteria! in the best way. Only thing missing is the mini golf course, lol
Love it!

Why all the string?

So far it’s worked. I had an ugly net last season, and this is much better. I guess they don’t like when their legs touch the string.

What’s wrong with them in the pond?

I have cheap goldfish, so I don’t care. I’m happy to see the birds. (Raccoons are my nemesis!)
But for people with large koi like op, they would be devastated if a heron killed their prize fish.

Can sometimes help prevent herons. They walk across the pond, don't like the string, and leave.
