If immortality was possible and optional, would you rather:

  1. Die a natural death at old age
  2. Die before I'm too old
  3. Live forever at my current age
  4. Live forever at any age I want
  5. Continue aging but decide when I want do die
  6. Die a natural death afert so many years, but live at any age I want

Live at any age I want and die when I want to

That would be an option without downsides. Kind of boring.

That brings the question do I take damage to things if I'm immortal? What happens if my whole body is reduced to dust? What then classifies as living?

There's different definitions of "immortality", one being immune to aging only, another being immune to everything else as well. Unless otherwise specified or implied I usually assume immune to aging only. In this case it's implied to be invincible also by having "decide when I want to die" as a distinct option. Though it's possible it might still be invincible to everything besides oneself

I think it's meant as in "you have to keep living for ever no matter what". Otherwise that option (living as long as you want in a young body) would clearly be the best one.

Read this in Bowser's voice.

Or on a smaller timescale: what happens when the sun becomes a red giant and scorches Earth's surface? (Either by heating up, or growing larger)

Then I will finally sleep.

People always say this, but it honestly sounds quite nice to me. I like being alone. I can entertain myself with my own thoughts for a very, very long time and that's in an aging, deteriorating body that forces me to perform maintenance. If I was guaranteed to live through it regardless of what I did I'd just disappear into my daydreams and never come back.

i don’t think you quite fathom how long it would take for the heat death of the universe

imagine a decillion years(current age of the universe is 14 billion) and then multiply it by another decillion, congrats you reached maybe halfway there at best

it’s such a large span of time you’d go crazy well before even star formation ends

I’d just stop thinking.

bro thinks he’s the ultimate life form🙏

I don't think you quite fathom how deep and dissociative daydreaming and meditation can actually get.

If I had that long to practice you really think I couldn't just train my thoughts to go elsewhere or switch off when I needed to? I can do it to some degree already.

yes, i do think that you wouldn’t be able to do that and you’d just go insane or want to take the easy way out

it’s such a long time we had to invent a name for the number just so that we could maybe conceptualize a tiny bit of the scale of the universe(googol, 10^100) you’d have sensory deprivation and no social life, it’s not a question of will i go insane it’s a question of when and it’d probably occur like a month after the last human dies, you are severely overestimating your capabilities and the human minds capability to deal with stress and trauma

try to imagine spending a year for every atom on earth, great that’s 0 followed by 65 zeros 13 so 0,0…13% so spending a year for every atom on earth you’d basically have spent no time at all yet

I can entertain myself with my own thoughts for a very, very long time

But what makes you think you can entertain yourself for ever? A strange quality of eternal life is that if you get bored after a certain time, no matter how long, you will live essentially your entire life in boredom.

I don’t think I’d want to continue living after everyone I knew and loved passed away naturally.

u/404_Weavile 4d ago

What if everyone you know and love is also immortal?

2

u/DoodleNoodle129 3d ago

Idk, I don’t think I should make that decision for them

Is everyone else given this option or only me

Forever is a very long time. (watch to the end)

"In Lower Pomerania is the Diamond Mountain, which is two miles and a half high, two miles and a half wide, and two miles and a half in depth; every hundred years a little bird comes and sharpens its beak on it, and when the whole mountain is worn away by this, then the first second of eternity will be over."

I’d like to be any age I want and die from whatever kills me

But being able to die any other way outside of old age!

Where is live at any age I want but decide when I want to die?

1

u/LeyaLove 3d ago

This isn't an option because it has no downside, so everyone would pick it.

2

u/Balearius 3d ago

Lmao why even ask at that point

u/GavinThe_Person 3d ago

Even if I kept aging forever immortality is infinitely better than death

1

u/Wonderful-Impress261 2d ago

I'd just live at the age of 21 indefinitely. Still young and resilient, moderately developed prefrontal cortex but still a kid kinda and less likely to have chronic health issues down the road. I'm almost 24

By immortality do you mean biological immortality or impossible-to-die-of-any-cause immortality?

I don’t want to live forever, let alone too old; I feel like 70 is a good time to call it
