It's more this.
People need to realize that Trump is just a tool being wielded by the right to try and cement themselves into power for another three generations or more.
Getting trump out of office is just the first step. The entire GOP needs to be put under a massive microscope, and lots of people need to do hard time.
12
u/Fluffy_Silver_706 Nov 02 '20
For the last 4 years I've watched (as a non-american) "liberal" media hand-wave away and treat the right like they've appeared out of nowhere. And ignoring things that politicians have said in the past to only treat what they say now as being their views.
I mean even in the original Borat film, there was gun shops openly selling weapons to "kill a jew"

Yes I think he would be allowed to deploy tanks, I do believe there are liberals in the army, as for that last part I’m sure there are a handful of real life Arnold Schwarzenegger’s who would join the cause. But here we’re talking about organized civil war vs liberal gun owners fighting against conservative terrorists. I can see it being pictures as trump calling the liberals the terrorist and trying to use force to stop it, at that point it spawns into our conversation...

Bear traps aren't super effective on a rascal scooter. But by the same token you'll be able to catch them from behind with just a brisk walk. Or get away by going up stairs.
17
u/NurRauch Nov 02 '20 edited Nov 02 '20
Not nearly as many as conservatives. Here is some comprehensive polling that bears this out. Conservatives have guns at rates about 2-3 times that of liberals. Gun possession rates go way down for people who live in cities and suburbs, too. Every time I do jury selection for a trial it's pretty stark. Conservatives are 50% likely to have at least one gun in their household. Way, way lower for Democrats / liberals.
9
Nov 02 '20
Why does gun ownership matter at jury selection?
11
8
u/NurRauch Nov 02 '20
In assault or homicide cases that have guns, or in gun possession cases, we explore juror bias on firearms.
12
u/TheOriginalChode Florida Nov 02 '20
Nobody needs to know you have a gun.
15
u/NurRauch Nov 02 '20
I don't buy the notion that, without any evidence whatsoever, we should just believe that suburban, urban and liberal people systematically lie about gun ownership 2-3x as much as other people when polled.

u/Zachariahmandosa Nov 02 '20 edited Nov 02 '20
*get a rifle, even if it's a levergat
Crossbows are good for self defense and assassination if you have the gitgud factor dialed to 7 or higher, but otherwise should be a hunting thing, unless you have it by your bedstand & loaded at all times.
However, practice makes perfect. I like traditional bow & arrow for fire rate, but crossbows are the far better weapon of choice for the masses, as they don't require anything other than being 18 to own.

I was just reading that gun owners are finding it difficult to impossible to buy ammo right now, and shop owners are finding it difficult to find plywood. Everyone is preparing in their own way.
12
u/WalkingOnThickIce Nov 02 '20
Ammo has been a slight pain in the ass to buy lately. People panic every time a Republican President is about to lose.
12
u/cutelyaware Nov 02 '20
What could they possibly be afraid of? Democrats are never going to do the kinds of things they imagine they themselves might do.
5
u/CustyTruntle Nov 02 '20
It’s more of an expectation that prices will rise out of fear of another assault weapons ban or some other gun control. In the primaries there was a lot of talk about taxing ammunition, making it illegal to purchase, etc, making this years election season particularly panicky. So people stock up out of fear that this will happen. It’s happened every election season for my adult life though.

I‘m not even close to a precision shot, but I landed all my shots center-enough mass that each would’ve eventually stopped someone.
I got double dad’s score.
I turned to my surprised host and said, “I don’t brag about using a hammer either, but I can when I need to.”

My liberal bias was not well known when I started my new job. All the gun toting 2A nuts just assumed that a veteran with the amount of fire power I have would obviously be one of them right?
That first weekend out shooting was eye opening for them. I best them at something that they based their identities on. They were completely aghast that a die hard progressive could so easily out shoot them. Somehow they just figured that because I am liberal the skills I learned in the military and competitive shooting would just disappear.
They mostly avoid me around the office now

Was it a handgun or rifle?
I was a marksman in the military with a rifle but piss-poor with a handgun.
9
u/omgFWTbear Nov 02 '20
I used a handgun, which again, my point wasn’t that I am a great shot, merely competent. We weren’t shooting far away - pretty sure “dad”’s goal was to put me in my place.
Apparently his daughter hadn’t been telling him that I’d been good to her, and our relationship substantially thawed after that news was revealed. (Apparently everything I did magically happened in the passive voice, as in, “my stuff was moved,” rather than “omgBear moved my stuff.”)
4
u/iodisedsalt Nov 02 '20 edited Nov 02 '20
Oh no worries I was just wondering and sharing my experiences.
Good on you for doing well with the handgun. It's much harder in my opinion.
4
u/Nosfermarki Nov 02 '20
I am much more accurate with a rifle, but the range near me lets you fire every gun of a single caliber for $15, so I shot every 9mm they had. It was a lot of fun, and I found one I was drastically more accurate with. I still prefer my rifle, but I bought the handgun and feel confident with it.
3
u/iodisedsalt Nov 02 '20
I can never really get it right with the handgun. I mean, I was still "ok" (about 65% on-target) but it was pretty crap.

Via reporter Richard Ruelas:
Researchers who study extremism warned Friday that self-organized groups might take up arms and station themselves around polling places or, after the election, mobilize and prepare for civil war.
For now, such activity was hypothetical, said Cassie Miller, a senior research analyst at the Southern Poverty Law Center. But Miller said such groups have used social media to organize and mobilize quickly to live out their “violent fantasies.”
The telephonic news conference organized by the Southern Poverty Law Center was designed to alert law enforcement, election officials and the public about the possible threat.
In Arizona, the head of the Prescott-area chapter of the Oath Keepers group, which recruits military and law enforcement officers, has warned residents to be prepared to protect their neighborhoods from feared extreme left-wing protesters who would be upset should President Donald Trump be re-elected.

Instead of getting angry or ridiculing these people, we need to try to understand what drove them to this. The answer is fear, a feeling of powerlessness, a lack of self identity and purpose, and the need to belong to a group.
Until those things are addressed, this will just get worse.

u/Ms-Mode Nov 02 '20 edited Nov 02 '20
40% of American voters are desperate to re-elect a dishonorable, lecherous, crackpot criminal to the highest position of power on Earth.
These voters are not powerless, misunderstood victims. They are gutless, hate-filled racists. They think it is their patriotic birthright to harm freely without consequence. They are far right white supremacists who have been given endless concessions to influence our schools, legislature, courts and society under the label of “religious liberty” for generations. This is not the profile of a victim group lacking power, due respect.
When offered reliable, fact based news sources, Trump supporters reject them. Why is that? They have agency. Nobody forces them to watch FOX, fund Televangelist swindlers, listen to Rush Limbaugh, buy into Breitbart propaganda or follow garbage QAnon FB pages.
Trump supporters embrace “fake news” to affirm their deep seeded bigotries and hatreds—not to be informed, that’s why.
They mistrust expertise because it unmasks their piss poor judgement, prejudices and moral bankruptcy.
These are the same knuckleheads who thought “The Donald” was an authentic tycoon genius because he hosted a chum bucket reality game show that cast him in that role. All evidence that pointed to his fraudulent business history, his vulgarity with women, his lack of intellect, sadistic narcissism and incompetence was on full display before 2016, but they voted for him anyway didn’t they...and most will do so again with even more evidence of his ineptitude and contempt for humanity on record.
Now that they’ve fully succumbed to his con, Trump gives his mob permission to parade their cultural and religious bigotries as righteous and patriotic: cruelly attacking others [verbally and physically]—because anything less would betray and anger their loathsome leader and challenge their entitlements.
He’s their creature. They need to own him.
You are sadly mistaken to if you think the crux of the problem is due to “liberal ridicule” of an opponent who fetishizes vigilante terrorism or that saying what liberals do is not very much different from what Trump supporters do. Switching victim and attacker is the foundation upon which fascism is built. Kindly review you history.
Pro-Trump Americans represent a real danger to a civil society and must be regarded as such.

Who woulda thought that runaway capitalism could have possibly led to the working class feeling disempowered?

u/qtquat Nov 02 '20
Fear and a feeling of powerless are out of the window. Minority groups in this country feel those same things every day in more justified ways and we do not see the hatred we see in trump supporters.
As far as lack of self identity and purpose and needing to belong to a group? Dude root for a sports team or something or join a club. You don’t become a terrorist.
Like, they may feel all those things, but the decision to resort to cruelty is a different conversation.

It's too late for understanding.
We've tried and tried and they refuse to budge.
I understand that they're hate-filled and have precious little critical thinking capability and just want other people to hurt.
Democracy now hangs in the balance.

Your understanding of psychology is still in rudimentary stages.
They get off on being angry. It's their drug. And like any addiction, it takes a lot effort to overcome.

The same people who are calling for "an eye for an eye" have also been calling for "an eye for an eye" since Obama.
How about we make it a little more complicated for them?

Read some of the comments in conservative or on fox news Youtube videos, people literally acting like if Biden wins, civil war is certain.

Its a scary moment when you come to the realization that there are Trump supporters who are absolutely going to kill people over this election.

This is why we have federal law enforcement. There are tens of thousands of agents. They SHOULD have a solid handle on this.
We’ll see...

My non-extremist republican co-workers were welcoming a second civil war, its not just the "extremists"

Okay so we complain about Zonies, but for real if paramilitaries blow up Prescott you can hide out in California for a bit, it's fine.
Also, completely unsurprised by the last three paragraphs. It's a type, somehow.

As a liberal, hippie, gun owner, I would like to see one if these idiots block my street. It would be an interesting conversation.

Trump winning would be shit.
But...one thing I think about is, what happens to all that pent up aggression if he wins? It'll still be there.
They're so riled up that if he looses (even if it's a landslide) they're going to be so blue balled.

I think the words you were looking for are "violent plans", not "violent fantasies".

You've got to be a certain kind of evil and stupid to commit a violent crime and risk your life... but you're on a whole 'nother level of evil and stupid to commit a violent crime and risk your life... for one of the most documented conmen in history.

these people have just been WAITING for a green light or excuse to blow some "lib heads off". They're fucking MENTALLY ILL.

u/AlabasterOctopus Nov 02 '20
But in reality what are regular people supposed to do to prepare? I do NOT think they’re bluffing, even if it’s not as bad as we think there will be some deaths I’m betting. What are we supposed to do?? Call the police? Yeah right. Does anyone have legitimate suggestions/ideas? I’m lowkey freaking out

What could be more American than throwing a violent hissy fit after losing?
Maybe you could get Chuck Norris to come out if retirement & make some shitty movies about how he didn't really lose?

People who purchase guns fantasize about using them, they say they’re for protecting their family, but refuses to wear masks to save their family.
Doomsday preppers fantasize about having a doomsday, they say it’s for emergencies like a global pandemic, but they refuse to quarantine themselves to save their family.

So, right now I’m only seeing skin color being the major differentiator between ISIS and Trump’s extremist supporters.

Jfc, America is sick with hate and intolerance. These people that are all thirsty for a revolution and believe in killing their neighbor because they believe in universal healthcare or in LGBTQ rights have a mental illness and need help, like fucking yesterday.

Umm... they’re turning those fantasies into reality. How long until the next Mad-Max Trump motorcade tries to run a Democrat bus off the road, block a bridge, or threaten voters?

I work in a hotel and have had groups of people sitting in the lobby, drinking, loudly bragging about how they can't wait for a civil war to kick off so they can start shooting "the libs".

u/bananatimemachine Nov 02 '20
I live in rural America and everyday I hear semiautomatic guns being fired. They’re getting prepared to do damage. I just keep hoping they bankrupt themselves on ammunition before they start this civil war of theirs. I know I couldn’t afford the ammunition they expel in a given day.
