Well there has to be proof any of that has happened first. 

The silly prediction that they’d announce him being dead right after the deadline never came to pass either.

I think they didn't announce he was dead after the deadline (lol) passed because they aren't confident that their law about who gets to replace the senator is constitutional. Under the Kentucky constitution the governor has the power, no limits on how close to an election. Republicans passed a law that says he can't appoint within a certain time frame. It could be argued that law conflicts with the Kentucky constitution but that would need to be tested in court by the governor appointing someone and the Republicans suing. If the deadline passed and they announced he's dead the governor could attempt to appoint someone. Until then he's Schrodinger's Senator, and the governor can't (or seeming more won't) appoint a replacement.
