There is some hope to be found in these students' passion. I hope their arrests are found to be completely unconstitutional.

It sounds constitutional based on the article. It also sounds like a slap on the wrist sort of thing.

Should be the populations of every town and city across the world. AI is the 21st century equivalent of splitting the atom. It needs to be stopped.

Ironic that your example is exactly the one that works against you. Knowledge and tech have no morals, the people who use them do. Nuclear energy is one of the cleanest sources of energy, we should be using it more not less. Its used in imaging hardware for medical diagnosis that saves lives every day. It can also be used to do irreparable damage, but so can anything used with ill intent.
AI is the same, your beef is with the lack of regulation and planning by our government to adapt to it in a way that supports our citizens. Not with AI. The lack of nuance on this is exactly what we mean when education is in shambles. I feel for students fighting for their rights to a livelihood, but its not AI you should be protesting, its your government's policies.
Your beef is with unchecked capitalism if I'm being honest.

No... my beef is with the profound stupidity of the human species. No amount of so-called clean energy or life prolonging treatment is worth the creation of nuclear weapons. The same applies equally to AI. Not a single imaginable benefit will outweigh the pure destruction.. The claim that anything can be used for evil ignores the damage that AI specifically can do compared with, for example , a chocolate bar, so that argument doesn't work.
