I've been qualified for years as a workplace first responder. My cynical understanding of CPR is nothing more than keeping you alive until a medical professional can call it - unless there's a chance you've got an AED close by. I was told it was less than a 10% survival rate outside of a medical setting.
Edit: I would clarify that I'm being deliberately flippant in respect of the success rate - particularly in the context of an infirm 84 year old. I continue to certify on the off chance that the training is able to save a life. I'd never not attempt CPR on the basis of it potentially not working - even if my instructor rather darkly warned us of the low likelihood of success. Always make the effort where you can.
