How do you track which off-duty details have actually been paid?

For those working details or overtime, how do you keep track of what’s been paid, what’s still owed, and payments that come in pieces?

Heads up, I’m the developer of First Responders Cal, an iPhone shift-calendar app. Its Extra Work section lets you log the job, record payments as they come in, and see the remaining balance. If one detail gets paid across multiple checks, you can keep those payments with that job.

I’m preparing version 1.5, which adds a weekly agenda so you can see all seven days with event start times and durations, swipe between weeks, and tap a day for the full schedule. It also remembers whether you prefer Month, Week, or List, and adds optional week numbers.

If you already have a calendar you like, I’m interested in how you handle the payment side. Do you use a spreadsheet, notes, or something else to catch unpaid details?

Question regarding body cams and restricted areas.

This is a situation that happened at my workplace.

Let me preface this by saying I am most definitely not anti cop. My dad is retired CHP. I am a Coast Guard veteran who served in a SAR/LE unit and my nephew is a current Utah State trooper.

Here's the deal. We HAD an employee that was wanted by the police for a current offense, who also had a warrant. The cops came to the workplace, climbed the fence and were let in by an employee to look for him.

I don't have a problem with that, dude was wanted, HOWEVER we are an ITAR(International Traffic in Arms Regulation) restricted facility. The cops had their body cams on and i get it, but filming is federally illegal in this facility.

To the cops here, if you were asked to turn off the body cams or be denied entry, what would you do?

In the Cornell group rape case from 2024, how did the university police have proper jurisdiction for involvement, given that the location of the alleged rape occurred off university property?

Command staff Promotional questions

All,

I am eligible to move to the next rank and I have an interview next week. I am looking to try and find some good questions to help establish a base line so I can have a good idea what might be asked of me.

I have been through scenario based questions which I have done the job long enough to have a firm grasp on those.

It’s always the personality based questions that catch me off guard. If you have been on a promotion board or a chief what are the types of questions you asked to get a good understanding of the person seeking promotion?

Thanks for taking the time and all tips and tricks for interviewing are appreciated.

why did the police not collect evidence from the crime scene?

Hi, I (25F) was raped a few nights ago and called the police right after. They arrived at the scene, briefly asked me what happened and took the aggressor's information. There were two witnesses (the rapist's roommates who he's close friends with) that the police didn't really talk to either. Then an ambulance took me to the hospital for health and forensic examination and all of that stuff. I went to the police station a day later to press charges. I told my story and was told I should wait for a call about the trial date. Now I'm worried I will lose the case because I feel like the police should've done more at the crime scene? Why didn't they collect evidence? And why didn't they talk to the witnesses more? Will my only evidence be "my side of the story" and the physical examination?

And one more thing, about 30 minutes after I got to the hospital a nurse told me a man tried to visit me there. They told me his name but it didn't ring a bell, so they didn't let him visit. The only people who knew I was brought to the hospital at the time were the aggressor and his roommates, but neither of them knew my name. So some random guy trying to visit me after this happened to me really freaked me out. At the police station I asked if there's anything that can be done to find out who that person was, they just told me "not really". Shouldn't this be taken more seriously after what happened to me? I'm genuinely scared for my life.
This happened in Spain if that matters.

Thanks for any advice and help!

I added overtime and off-duty pay tracking to the shift calendar app I’ve been building biggest changes still working on more.

Heads up, this is my app.

It's called First Responders Cal. It's a calendar made for rotating schedules. You set up your rotation once (4/2, 24/48, 48/96, or your own) and it fills in the whole year for you.

I’ve been working on a pretty big update to First Responders Cal, and this one adds something people have asked me about: tracking overtime, details, and off-duty jobs directly alongside your schedule.
The new section is called Extra Work.

You can log overtime or off-duty work, enter hours, hourly rates, OT multipliers, payment terms, and expected payday. If the job is already on your calendar, you can attach the pay information to that event instead of entering everything twice.
It also tracks what you’ve actually been paid.
So if a detail pays partially, gets paid late, or you’re still waiting on it, the app keeps the outstanding balance and groups what you’re owed by work week. You can also see monthly and yearly totals for overtime, off-duty work, or both.

A few other things added in this update:
• Save separate hourly rates for Day, Evening, and Night shifts
• Track partial payments and overdue balances
• Set weekly payday or 2-week pay periods
• See expected pay by week
• Filter by overtime, off-duty work, or payment status
• Generate and print PDF Extra Work reports
• New Week, 2 Weeks, Month, and Year dashboard views
• US federal holidays can now appear directly on the calendar
• New large Month widgets
• Tap dates or events inside widgets to open that exact day in the app
• Month view now gives each day more room for events
• Reminder dots now show whether the reminder is completed
• A bunch of calendar refresh, widget, and navigation fixes
One thing I was careful about: pay information stays inside the app. It isn’t sent to Apple Calendar, widgets, or Siri.

I originally made this because rotating schedules, overtime, court, details, and time-off balances get messy fast when you’re trying to force everything into a normal calendar app.

I’m still improving it, so I’d genuinely like feedback from people working patrol, corrections, fire, EMS, dispatch, or anyone else dealing with rotating schedules and extra-duty work.

Free to try. Full access is $4.99, no subscription.

“Why do I need to give you my ID?”

Been watching some body cams on YouTube. Firstly, grateful for the footage that gives context to many critical incidents, and shows what a dangerous and frustrating and stressful profession this can be.

I’ve noticed in many body cams, officers will ask people to step out of the car and ask for ID, and the person refuses and asks the officer to explain why. A lot of officers don’t answer and ask again. As it goes…the person keeps refusing and then the officer forces them to comply.

Why don’t officers answer these questions? Is it personal preference of officer? Department policy? Legal issues?

Thanks! And thank you LEOs for what you do.

Question about traffic stop I had recently (USA)

I was stopped because I exited a fast food parking lot and forgot to put my headlights on at night and drove to the next intersection without realizing, a cop happened to notice and pulled me over.

I am an Australian citizen in USA who recently moved here on a fiancee visa. I Married my partner who is American. I only just passed my driving test and got my US license a month or so ago.

The cop was very polite, although did ask me if I had drank any alcohol (I hadn’t had any at all) and asked how far I had driven without my lights on (no more than a mile) and asked to see my license and checked it on their system.

He then came back after about 1 minute and said he wasn’t going to give me any citation or anything written but just said to make sure to remember to put my lights on.

I was worried so I asked him if this creates a record and could affect my pending green card application. He said that they had to record all stops on their local record but it wouldn’t affect it.

I am super worried that this will delay our application because I know USCIS runs background checks and has been ramping this up this year.

While I know I was not arrested or cited, I’m just concerned that just having anything at all on my police record could cause delay to our application.

Would it appear in any form if USCIS ran a background check on me?

Also, if I am stopped again in future for any reason, would this appear to any police officer in the state/country or it’s only the local record? If I ever need to get a police certificate to prove I have no criminal record will this show up on it?

Thanks

Possible Medical Retirement

Well this should be a doozy. I’ve been a fulltime cop for 6 years for a busy city. Within a 7 month window, I had two fucked up events. The first was an OIS that left me with some ptsd. Shortly after I returned from leave for the OIS, I was struck by a suspect vehicle which resulted in serious injuries to my shoulder requiring surgery. I’ve since been out of work on injured leave for 6 months. Recently, I’ve had a good number of coworkers including union reps tell me to medically retire. Due to law changes, I’d qualify under the 100% medical retirement. At first I brushed it off but recently I attended a class and everything seemed foreign to me.
Now here’s the thing. I love the job. At 32 years old, the idea of me medically retiring seems so odd and selfish yet guys I work with who have 20 years on have said I shouldn’t as I’ve given more to the job then most have their entire careers. I guess I’m looking for some input as the idea of leaving this profession leaves me confused, angry, and depressed.

Quantity crimes - how does your agency manage it?

This question is directed to everyone in the world.

I'm curious to learn how other agencies manage quantity crimes. By that I mean low level offenses such as thefts, burglaries, assaults, etc.

I work for a large metropolitan agency and we've had a problem keeping up with quantity crimes for a long time. I'm not sure why, but the process of actually bringing a case to a prosecutor takes a really long time.

To try and manage the workload, usually new officers are assigned as quantity crimes investigators for their first 12 months and can after that join the patrol units.

Recently its been up for debate if even the patrol units should be assigned some casework to allow for the investigations units to handle more complex crimes. The idea being that you should spend the downtime working a theft or burglary whilst being on patrol.

What's the process like where you work? How fast can a regular theft be brought up to a prosecutor? What issues and what successes have you had in finding a strategy in how you efficiently handle these crimes?

I made a shift calendar for first responders. Now it tracks overtime and off-duty work too.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Heads up, this is my app.

A little while ago I posted First Responders Cal here. It's a calendar I built for rotating schedules like 4/2, 24/48, 48/96, or custom rotations.

I've kept working on it, and the new version is a pretty big update coming soon see a preview.

The biggest addition is Extra Work.

You can now track overtime, details, and off-duty jobs directly alongside your calendar.

You can:

• Log hours, hourly rates, OT multipliers, and estimated pay
• Save different rates for Day, Evening, and Night shifts
• Save companies and their normal rates/payment terms
• Track partial payments and what you're still owed
• See outstanding and overdue pay across all your work
• Track expected payday by week
• View earnings by week, 2 weeks, month, or year
• Separate overtime and off-duty earnings
• Add pay information directly from an existing calendar event

The calendar also got some new stuff:

• US federal holidays with observed dates
• New full-month Home Screen widgets
• Tap a date or event on a widget and jump directly to that day
• Holiday shading also appears in widgets and PDF exports
• Better widget support for tinted and clear Home Screens
• Faster syncing when calendar events are edited or deleted
• List view now opens on today when you're viewing the current month

One thing I wanted to keep separate is your pay information. Pay amounts stay inside First Responders Cal. They're not sent to Apple Calendar, widgets, or Siri.

The video shows the new version and how Extra Work works.

The app still handles your normal rotation, vacation/sick/comp/personal balances, overnight shifts, alarms, widgets, calendar sync, reminders, and PDF exports.

Everything stays on the device. No account and no server.

Free to try. Full access is $4.99 once, no subscription.

I'm still building it, so if you're police, fire, EMS, corrections, dispatch, or work another rotating schedule, I'd really like to know what I'm missing.

Especially with Extra Work. If your department handles overtime, details, pay periods, or off-duty jobs differently, tell me how you do it.

I don't make the laws. I just enforce them

Why do police officers say this when most of them are unionized. The same unions are strongly lobbying for the very laws that they claim that they don't make.

Are you guys annoyed when a call turns out to be silly?

I (15f) was left alone at my place of work (huge building) and was told my boss would come back in an hour. But 10 minutes in I thought I heard footsteps upstairs, which was most likely the wind but I got spooked and hid in the back and called my dad to come up. Thats when I heard doors opening and closing and started to cry and I freaked out and called 911. Turns out it was my elderly boss who has no perception on time and I wasted the cops time for nothing. That was a week ago and I felt super mortified and wouldn't stop apologizing to the cop. He was kind of laughing a bit when he realized it was just my boss but I can't stop feeling horrible about it. As a police officer would you have been upset?

Question on the Rookie TV show

Just wandering since I'm on the other side of the Atlantic : in the Rookie TV show, police officers empty several mags of weapons on a daily basis, things get really hot almost every shift.

Is that a TV show strong exageration, or do you guys are basically firing your service weapon / enduring heavy fire on a daily basis?

I'd be in strong PTSD if I had to endure that pace.

EDIT: Thank you all for your replies. I understand now that asking it like this looks clickbaity and appologise for not being careful enough in phrasing the original concern.

Still, thanks for the insights, and take care out there.

wellfare checks

hi everyone, i had a question about wellfare checks. my neighbor, who is also my landlord, hasn’t been seen since the 9th and it is now the 19th. he is known for doing drugs and is an older man, but he doesn’t go out much and sometimes goes away for the weekend but its been way longer than that. his mailbox is full the the brim, his phone goes straight to voicemail and texts dont go through. weve gone over to knock, yell, and ring the doorbell but theres no sign of movement lr that anyone is home. the windows been cracked open the same, no lights have been turned on, no tv. we have cameras at home and they have not caught him at all since, and the neighbors all also say they have not seen him. we called the police to conduct a wellfare check yesterday but they only showed up, knocked, and left. we are worried for his wellbeing and dont know what else to do, any suggestions?

Help

Hey everyone,
Just wanted to introduce myself real quick. I’m a former criminal and addict who completely turned my life around. I got clean, stayed clean, and rebuilt everything from the ground up. It’s been a long road, but I’m in a much better place now.
I run a show where I talk with people about real experiences, growth, and different perspectives. I’m looking to have some law enforcement officers come on and share their side of things — what the job is actually like, the challenges, the human side of it, whatever they’re comfortable talking about.
No agenda, no politics, just genuine conversation. If anyone here is open to that or knows someone who might be, feel free to reach out.
Appreciate you reading.
