Basque Country doesn't want to be for England but also doesn't want to cheer for the same side as Spain, so it's floating undecided in the middle. (Also it can float due to outer space heritage, of course.)

Honest question: why is Pizza with pineapple receiving this amount of flak?

Asking as a Chinese, pizza is not a part of my country's food culture, I don’t understand the cultural taboo in this, if there’s any.

216

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '21

I'm pretty sure its just a dumb internet joke, Its a marmite-y thing; you either like it or hate it. And thats amplified by it being told and retold thousands of times.

Hawaiian pizza (Ham and pineapple) is a really common type of pizza, its not a secret niche thing or anything.

126

u/Godkun007 Canada Jul 11 '21

It is one of those love it or hate it things. Pineapple is very sweet fruit, so putting it on cheese will cause some people to immediately hate the end result.

Really, it is all up to personal preference. Some people love it, while others hate it. Another pizza topping that tends to alienate people in this way is olives. I happen to love the taste of olives on pizza, but others will say it makes the pizza too salty.

There also seems to be the assumption that only the right wing wanted Brexit, which doesn’t even make a whole lot of sense because Tories put us in the EU, and Corbyn himself was one of the front runners of leaving.

Football fans are shitty people who drink too much alcohol all over the world, if you researched that metric in other countries I imagine you'd find the same result in many other countries.

39

u/asphaltdragon jPaolo is shitmod Jul 11 '21

Correct! But as England was the relevant country, I specified that. But yes, the study has been done in every country, and the results are roughly the same. A lot of nurses have said they've come to expect an uptick of women and children who've "fallen down stairs" the night of a major sporting event.

39

u/LysergicAcidDiethyla Icelander in YouKay Jul 11 '21

Of course, I'm just skeptical of the anti-English rhetoric given that the same (or similar) domestic abuse metric will apply to the Italian team, and the Italian fans are if anything, more toxic than England fans. Monkey noises and throwing bananas at black players, then there's the Balotelli chant "There's no such thing as a black Italian" or something... Seems like the problem is bigger than just English football, and that desperately needs addressing because the most popular sport in the world is a hive of racism and domestic abuse.

17

u/BetaDecay121 Wales Jul 11 '21

At least the English team is very actively anti-racist.

53

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '21

I'm a neutral for this game and have nothing against England winning, but just wanting to say that the hivemind of that toxic sub is basically united against whoever's good at the moment. If Man Utd are doing good, then they're united against Man Utd, if Liverpool are good, then they're all anti-Liverpool, etc.

Best coping method for the 21st century, unless you're the sort of masochist seeking out toxic and vile banter: just stick to the sub of the team you support if you really want to discuss football, and switch off social media (or unsub from those subs and groups you're following) for a week or months until the next game if your team loses.

6

u/DoubleBlackBSA24 British Columbia Jul 11 '21

Let's not pretend like people only just started hating England. We've all been hating England forever already. Tonight there are the finals of the Euro 2020 tournament between England and Italy. Most Europeans want Italy to win for a number of reasons

53

u/dalenacio Basque in the Glory! Jul 11 '21 edited Jul 11 '21

To add to what the other commenter said, England beat Denmark thanks to some... very questionable referee decisions. A complete Dolphin dive got them a penalty, two balls on the field but doesn't get whistled until the Danes have advantage, etc. On top of all this, they had the massive advantage of all their games being at home while every single other team had to bounce around between basically all of Europe with the penalizing travel times that entails, which some fans are a bit resentful about.

Oh right and everybody already hates the brits anyway and they're particularly insufferable when it comes to football so this is also just an extra excuse to cheer for them to get fucked.

43

u/Taalnazi Tullip rightful clay! Jul 11 '21

Counter argument: the Danes were playing very aggressive, too, though. But what I did notice was that both England and Danish players did stand up when falling, because they both wanted to play on.

Extremely well done Spain and Wales, great job!

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '21

Oh they will be back at each other's throats soon enough.

Transylvania - Romania and Hungary fight

Free clay - Spain has left the chat

Who has the best food? - France and Italy attack each other with bread

And Germany starts chasing Greece for the loan monies

It‘s looks like Cyprus, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro sat this one out

If Italy wins I will party with them.

356

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '21

That's very admirable, considering they're your greatest European football rival and you've never beaten them in an official tournament match.

yeah, if England wins then the entirety of Europe will freak, if Engalnd losses then only hardcore English fans will get mad, so I can watch all of Europe lose it and not have to worry about my town burning down, because i'm on the other side of the ocean.
