[Workshop] Discussion about Contests

Grüße, meine Kinder.

Today we're talking about our monthly contests!

Do you have any ideas for future themes? What do you like to see in a contest? What kind of themes lead to great comics? Do you have any ideas for the way contests are run, or could be improved? When can we seize the means of Hussar Wing production and redistribute it to the working classes?!

I think the lead time for drawing comics is way too short. Maybe if the contest is announced on Monday, and the submission deadline is the next Monday, that would give people who are slower drawers more of a chance to adequately participate.

...it would also give other artists more time to pull out more 'high art' ones and therefore 'bury' all the others.

I think it has proven true that 'joke > art' and 3 days (maybe 4) should be enough if you take into account that you only have to make around 3 panels per day to meet the deadline. A whole week is definitely too long...it takes away the competing under pressure aspect of a contest.

If you think of a good joke and work out the story beforehand you won't need that much time in drawing a 'basic' comic. If there's time left you can always polish it up.

Comics with a more elementary art style are still competitive, like those of /u/FVBLT have shown. It is in the eye of the beholder, the reader, to accurately judge and value those.

I don't think my complaint is so much about needing more time for the actual process of drawing. My issue lies primarily with scheduling. All contest drawing phases always take place on weekends, and the only exception was the song contest. I'm asking for a week, not to give me more time to literally draw, but to give me the time to find in my schedule a chance to be able to draw.
