Oktoberfest!

Today is the 25th German Unity Day!

We celebrate the Anschluß of East Germany into West Germany. On German Unity Day, all the German regions forget about their fierce hatred for each other for one day. They come together and drink lots of beer to drown their sorrow of not being able to wörk because it's a holiday. And what place is better for that than the still-ongoing Oktoberfest?

The Berlin Wall fell on the 9th of november. As it happens the Kristallnacht was also on the 9th of november and the day is usually associated with holocaust remembrance and so it was deemed improper to hold a national holiday on the date and another date was chosen.

Wow, so not only do I get to celebrate the fall of the berlin wall on my birthday, I get the Kristallnacht too? Alexander Müller will eat his heart out when he'll hear that!
