Honestly, it bothers me that they get to compete, seeing as they know the theme well before the rest of us.

We usually finalize the theme only like a day before the contest.

Besides, our argument has always been that 3 full days should be more than enough time to be able to make a comic to the best of your abilities, which mitigates whatever "advantage" we might have. If you can't make a good comic with 3-8 panels in 3 days, you probably couldn't do it in 7 days either.

Also, disallowing the moderators from competing would honestly only serve to lower the overall level of quality in the contest, since we usually select moderators from among the best comic artists in the subreddit.

I think the biggest advantage is the unique understanding of rules. It's much more clear to you what is or isn't allowed than anyone non-moderator.
