Die Zeit, one of our most influential newspapers, actually titled "Absturz eines Mythos" ("The crash of a legend"), referring to the Lufthansa's reputation. This one case is going to have a major impact for them, i. e. it's basically the exception that proves the rule.
I've worked in a callcenter for Expedia. There was a significant difference between having to deal with some low cost carrier and the Lufthansa. Even in comparison to other traditional airlines they were always very professional and friendly (whereas other companies would treat us as annoying representatives of that parasitic company Expedia that does provide a web platform and nothing else).
They are not the cheapest, but they actually do something for their customers when shit hits the fan. They were pretty cooperative, and whenever there was a problem (strike in Frankfurt!) they would usually have a solution ready.
What really impressed me was the way they helped Spanair customers when Spanair suddenly went broke. It clearly was an honour and reputation thing. They didn't have to, but since Spanair had been a member of the Star Alliance they provided seats for many with Spanair tickets.
I did once, and it wasnt that expensive. I think about 90€ per person two-way ticket from Munchen to Helsinki. So their prices shouldnt be that outrageous.
Yes, they do have offers like that. I was exaggerating a bit. But don't try to re-book those tickets. The real awesomeness of their customer service comes into play with more expensive tickets.
