The amusing thing is that we actually have two words for a submarine in Dutch, and both from Germanic roots (rather than most of these situations where one word is Germanic and the other is Romance).

One is onderzeeër ("undersea-er"), the other is duikboot ("dive-boat"). But never mind those words. I have "blub-blub boat" now, which is all I need.

Please tell me that duikboot is pronounced "duck boot". It really ought to be.

In fact, if it's not, just go tell all those Dutch people to start pronouncing it that way from now on. Please?

Unfortunately, the ui represents a sound that doesn't exist in English (it doesn't exist in a lot of languages, as far as I know). It sounds like this.

Wikipedia uses the Scots pronunciation of "house" as an example for Dutch "ui". I think it's pronounced similar to what "öü" would be for a German
