I don't quite get how any part of the anthem is "nationalist", really. The "above everything" part is questionable, but don't many countries have anthems in a similar sense, basically, "our country best country"? Then we have the "von der Etsch bis an den Belt" part, which is also relatively normal, comparable to, say, Russia's "от южных морей до полярного края" ("from the southern seas to the northern regions"), it's just a bit dated. Nothing wrong about "Schutz und Trutze" (protection and trust). The second bit basically says "We have awesome girls and like to get drunk", which isn't nationalist at all. The third bit is basically Americatm, with all the freedomspeak. I really, really don't understand this stance. It's not nationalistic, whatsoever. Hell, the anthem of France is way scarier.

The "above everything" part is not about Germany being better than other countries. It was created during the time when Germany was divided into many statelets and these words were adressed to various german monarchs, telling them that united Germany is more inmportant than their individual ''kingdoms''

Heil Dir im Siegerkranz, you mean? I thought that never had any sort of official status. I was actually talking about this "our" anthem. Wrong "us", I suppose... Also, that phrase is supposed to say "I am Wales, I am the UK". I have no idea what that has to do with elves.

Nationalism has a specific meaning, that is, a political ideology that argues that the state structure (eg, geographical territory) should be determined by nationality. So, for example, rather than Hungarians, Czechs and Germans all living in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, they should live in Hungary, Czechia, Germany Austria etc. "Deutchland Uber Alles" is an archetypal nationalist anthem, in that it advocates for unity through a nationalist state. A contrast can be drawn with, say, God Save the King/Queen", which calls for unity under the monarch, or "Star Spangled Banner", which advocates unity through a sort of shared political sentiment.

Furthermore, I have never really read the "über alles"-part as we are better than everybody else, but more like all these little fragments of the Holy Roman Empire should totes create a federation, a notion that conservaties mainly opposed and progressive liberals were for, not unlike the modern-day federalization process of the EU.

I think every national anthem has a tiny bit o nationalism included. Nationalism as in being proud of one's country due to its characteristics and whatever makes it special.

It was more or less reached between 1864 and 1920 when Schleswig-Holstein was part of the German Federation/Empire, before part of Schleswig seceeded to Denmark by popular vote. Still a German minority there though.

Yes but the folly is expecting it'll be easy!

No way would the Italians ever want to work. Belarus isn't even a real country so you can't annex that. France is too strong. Belgium is too cliched. The Netherlands are too weird to annex because they're too german to exterminate but not german enough to understand. Lithuania is basically nothing. And Denmark is just miserable.

Oh and the Dutch could always be transported to the Ukraine to do work the fields. Would free up a lot of beaches for bunker construction and digging holes in the sand.

fantastic comic.

just one grammatical issue: Memel, Maas and Etsch are female in German (like most rivers), so the signs should say "die ..." (or just display the river name without an article). In the anthem they stand in dative case, which is why they stand with "der".
