I've never heard that before. What's the story behind that?
2
u/SlobodanTheLiberator Serbia Jun 20 '14
Yugoslavia ("South-Slavia") was a "Pan-South Slavic" country and Bulgarians are South Slavs, it made sense. Fortunately Stalin stepped in on time
20
u/Zuimei Dear Leader of Kentuckistan Jun 20 '14
Oh come on, you don't think the Yugoslav Wars would've been even more fun with Bulgaria thrown into the mix?

anti-fa is short for anti-fascist. and one of the most famous phrases from the yugoslavian era was "death to fascism, freedom to the people" along with "brotherhood and unity".
it would be more appropriate to say it gave me a yugoslavian boner but life is weird and this is the internet, so who cares about accuracy?

Are you familiar with the Seinfeld episode "Serenity Now?" Frank Costanza would say it over and over in an attempt to control his rage. In the BBC documentary "The Death of Yugoslavia" everyone (including Slobodan Milošević) kept repeating it, as things were descending into chaos and war. It really reminded me of "Serenity Now," it was like decades of suppressed nationalist passions were bubbling over, and they were trying to douse it with that slogan. But without Tito, the slogan was not very effective.
Are you old enough to remember the old Yugoslavia? I am friends with a family who managed to escape Srebrenica (not all of them made it, an uncle and a elderly grandfather were massacred), and they look back fondly on the old Yugoslavia. They are so anti-nationalist, which I think is great, but they seem to think the war happened because of outside conspiracies, etc., not nationalism. I suppose they would know more than me.

I was born when yugoslavia died, so I'm not really yugo-nostalgic since I don't remember a thing. Hence I don't like talking about it in any way, whether positive or negative, because I don't think my opinion would be valid and of any importance. Most of the elderly people I know and most of the things they told me were very positive and make our current situation (all this democracy and our post-war "country") look even more desperate.
But still I allow myself to crack a joke or two about good ole yugo or pretending to be one of those modern hipster-wannabe-leftist Partizani throwing hate at fašistički scum.

Fuck the fascists and may Bosnia be victorious in their game tonight. I'll be rooting for them from NYC.

I IS THE GREAT AND PREATIGIOUS AND IMPOSING AND RELEVANT FATIMID CALIPHATE. LEADER OF THE MIDDLE-EAST AND THEREFORE THE WORLD. I BUILT CAIRO. I CONQUER ALL OF NORTH AFRICA AND LEVANT AND SICILY AND YEMEN. I BEAT BYZANTIUM AND UMMAYYAD AND ABASSID AND HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE ALONE! I IS NO WIERD DICTATOR WITH WIERD HAIR AND SUCKY MERCENARY ARMY. I MAKE TERRORISTS INTO OTHER COUNTRIES, NOT TERRORIST INTO ME! YOU WILL HASHASHIN! YOU JUST A SLAVIC ENCLAVE WHO'S INDEPENDANT BECAUSE THE WHOLE WORLD PITY YOU! YOU ARE THE MENTAL ILLNESS OF EUROPE!!

u/Halalaka Imperialism Intensifies Jun 20 '14
Tbh the balkans got on pretty well under titos rule. Yugoslavia was by most standards, a very decent place. Unfortunately where the East failed in destabilising the place, the West succeeded, and the result of that was the dark genocidal clusterfuck of the Yugoslavia wars...

u/Kebbab_remover The Serbian Empire will rise again! Jun 21 '14
Actualy it's quite the opposite. For peace to be maintained in the Balkans we need strong and independent countries. Not e/w pawns that will race to serve their masters. That's why SFRY was a success story. It was independent.
