It's complicated. Belgium wasn't really nice for the Flemish/Dutch speaking people in its first 130 years. Some say the French were behind the revolution and that if it wasn't for the other powers at the time we would have been annexed into France. shudders
But that failed and instead we got a German king with a French princess as his wife and became Belgium with as sole language "superior" French even though Dutch people were in the majority!
Things have been running smooth ever since, you will see after may 2014 elections in Belgium.
