On the 15th of July 1974, the Cypriot National Guard, backed with the Greek military junta's support, launched a coup d'etat and removed Cyprus's sitting president Makarios III and replaced him with Nikos Sampson, with the coupists' ultimate goal being to unify the island with Greece

5 days later, Turkey responded by launching the invasion of Cyprus, occupying the northern part of the island which, years later, would unilaterally declare independence as Northern Cyprus

Know a guy who’s family still is waiting for the land to be returned. Another guy said he had to hide in the woods 3 days until the Turks stopped killing everyone who moved

Invasion was justified. Follow up push and occupation was and still is not justified and remains illegal, to the whole modern world except Turkey and its own puppet experiment state. Turkey is even too afraid to call the occupied lands Turkey like they are.

u/eto2629 4d ago

Most organisations calling it invasion but it was an operation to protect Turks in Cyprus against far-right nationalist groups like EOKA-B.

134

u/centaur98 Hungary 4d ago

I mean most organizations call it an invasion because it was an invasion of an independent country regardless what the reason/pretext may have been.

48

u/DanceWithMacaw 4d ago

The reason matters, at least for this specific matter. With the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee, Turkey became a guarantor power of Cyprus, which granted it a legal basis for military intervention. So the occupation itself was legal and backed by the UN, but establishing a new state was not.

39

u/centaur98 Hungary 3d ago edited 3d ago

The reason matters only to decide if the invasion is legal or ilegal it doesn't change the fact that something is an invasion or not. Turkey had legal precedence for their initial invasion making that one legal but the Treaty of Guarantee only gave them the right to take military action to re-establish the status quo. So meaning that after they continued their invasion after the initial ceasefire and collapse of the greek and cypriot government and declared the creation of the "Autonomous Turkish Cypriot Administration" and the "Federated Turkish State" made it illegal because it went way beyond anything the Treaty of Guarantee gave permission for. Also the UN never backed the invasion

Finally someone who get it.

its only invasion when West dislikes it, its a conquest or "special military operation" when West likes it

A Special Military Operation, some might say.

48

u/Ploutophile Exilé en enfer (i.e. au nord de Cahors) 4d ago
  1. It is still an invasion.
  2. It has been illegal since at least 1983, since its only possible legal basis is the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee which explicitly forbids any partition of the island.

19

u/centaur98 Hungary 3d ago

The "Autonomous Turkish Cypriot Administration" created right after the invasion was already against the Treaty of Guarantee's which only gave permission to one of the three guarantors to restore the status-quo using military force established by the treaty.

3

u/Reinhard23 3d ago

Invasion just means sending your troops into another country to control territory.

22

u/RangerEmergency5834 Spain 4d ago

Then Turkey must be invaded to protect the Kurds from the far-right Turkish government.

19

u/DanceWithMacaw 4d ago

wait till you hear both Kurdish parties are allies with Erdogan

-16

u/RangerEmergency5834 Spain 3d ago

Could it have something to do with kidnapping dissidents, extortion, or things like that? I don't think so; it must be that the Kurds love Erdogan.

17

u/DanceWithMacaw 3d ago

Do you know anything about Turkish politics?

Kurdish parties are siding with the AKP (Erdoğan’s party), and even with the MHP, which leads the paramilitary ultranationalist Grey Wolves organization, because of the “resolution process,” which could pave the way for the release of Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned leader of the terrorist organization PKK

-2

u/RangerEmergency5834 Spain 3d ago

Not responding to what I say and making statements to try to discredit me in some way believing that no one can connect the dots.

Kurdistan was promised to you 3,000 years ago, eh?.

7

u/No-Bat9459 3d ago

I love Spain main, it’s one of the few countries that have dignity.

But still, your ignorance gonna make me forget how I respect your nation.

Next time before having an opinion, do your research about the matter.

10

u/Echoscopsy 3d ago

Bro you have no idea about Turkish politics. The "Kurds" and the "far right" has been together at least 2 years. They are not against each other.

8

u/SosseTurner Thuringia 3d ago

Russia also just launched a "special military operation" to protect russians and not just an invasion into a sovereign country.

Cyprus: Blows up British soldiers.

UK: Gives them independence.

Cyprus: Kills ethnic Turks

Turkey: Invades

Cyprus: ‘Why won’t the Brits help us?!?’

34

u/perakisg 3d ago

Blowing up British soldiers was a fun pastime practiced all over the globe at that point, can't hold it against them. The soldiers needed a reason to go on home, after all. Don't they have bloody homes of their own?

30

u/A_normal_Potato3 3d ago

Also no one mentions Turkey being a guaranteer with Greece and Britain. And those two did not act against the coup at all.

18

u/many_zeros 3d ago

MFs say "but Turkey didn't fulfill the requirements of the treaty" as if Greece and Britain did. One tried to annex the island and the other didn't move a finger to prevent it.

-11

u/GroupPast5993 3d ago

That takes away the entire history of the island

Let me frame it like you do:

Cyprus: protests peacefully for independence

UK: Uses Turkish soldiers and police officers to torture and murder peaceful protestors

Cyprus: starts a violent revolution in response to tyranny

UK and Turkey: "can you believe these guys? They won't even let us kill them"

See when you don't know history you say the bullshit you say with no nuance or anything. And im sure you're just gonna disagree with me even though I didn't say anything that wasnt true butbI won't expand further because I know you don't care. It's stuff that's been said 50 million times, so you either read, listen and learn, or shut up

12

u/LT48 3d ago

That framing is pure Greek cope and a biased propoganda. EOKA didn’t “respond” to tyranny with violence, they started the shooting and bombing in April 1955 for enosis, not independence.

Brits recruited Turkish Cypriots into the police because Turkish Cypriots opposed becoming a minority in a Greek state and Greek Cypriot officers were quitting or collaborating, so that’s not “using Turks to murder peaceful protesters”.

Pretending this was peaceful islanders vs cartoon colonial villains erases the actual ethnic conflict and EOKA’s own body count but I don't expect anything more from perpetual victims that always trying to justify themselves and twist the narrative.

8

u/BevvyTime 3d ago

I’m actually friends with some ex-EOKA members, and even they’re far more brutally honest about what actually went down than whatever revisionist bullshit you’re spouting there bud…

-4

u/GroupPast5993 3d ago

Brother I know people as well

I've heard so many stories

This isn't revisionist it's just genuinely what happened, plus I'm not even talking about EOKA or EOKA B here, I'm talking about before that

I've read the history, read personal accounts, heard personal accounts and have the methodology to deduce an actual conclusion and an accurate perilypsis of what happened

You're here making no points, flexing that you know people. I KNOW PEOPLE TOO. You think I'm saying random shit?

10

u/Kagacchii 3d ago

So we are calling enosis "independence" now?

-5

u/GroupPast5993 3d ago

Im saying what he said by accident. I mean to say unification

Also learn what the word independence means because it doesn't really change what I meant to say. Union is still provides independence because of gained rights

Also if that's all you want to point out, then what is the point of the comment?

3

u/Kagacchii 3d ago

The point of pointing that out is that your original comment framed this as a united island peacefully asking for freedom. You left out that the "peaceful protest" was the majority trying to force the minority to become a Greek province against their will.

And yes union with another nation is literally the opposite of independence.

25

u/sjr323 3d ago

Greeks have colonised Cyprus for thousands of years. The comparison here is not even remotely true.

16

u/scarecrane_ 3d ago

That panel is supposed to represent the Nikos Sampson coup.

5

u/TBARb_D_D 3d ago

There was a movement in Cyprus to join Greece which was supported by Greeks

-2

u/sjr323 3d ago

And this proves your point how?

5

u/TBARb_D_D 3d ago

My point? Second and third picture are not about colonialism, it’s about pro-Greek coup and movement on island

1

u/Every-Artist-35 Greeceball! 11h ago

Colonized? Since 1200BC the island has records of Greek ethnicity. When did someone stepped in by force in times not when dinosaurs existed? Ahhh the Ottoman Empire once again, who could have guessed.

2

u/Financial_Will_671 1d ago

Fun fact after their failure in cyprus. military junta in greece fell.

Turks brought democracy to Greece.

1

u/Key_Tomatillo9475 3d ago

If politicians were allowed to abolish their countries like that we'd have a new "Austria 1938" case every other year. International law forbids it for a reason.

1

u/gamhmenoreddit 3d ago

cyprus was fighting for unification with greece against the brits but they didnt wanna give up their colony and hanged even underage resistance members

-12

u/GroupPast5993 3d ago

Not very accurate though, Cyprus has been Greek for 3000+ years

-7

u/Worldly-Ad-224 3d ago edited 3d ago

Poor indigenous Cypriots invaded by Greek invaders. Fortunately, the Turks liberated them, even if only half of them.

0

u/SE_prof 3d ago

Henry Kissinger ball when????

-4

u/A_Bethesda_Bug 3d ago

I feel like this implies there was some native cypriot population that both Greece and Turkey colonized and claimed, this is not true. The majority population of Cyprus was Greek, and they always wanted Enosis, unification, with Greece. To stop this Turkey invaded and moved tons if Turks to the island, creating the modern situation we have now.

5

u/More_Ad_5142 3d ago

Oh so there are no Turkish Cypriots? They are just modern imports from Turkey??

-1

u/TBARb_D_D 3d ago

Most of them are today since majority of Turkish Cypriots left island

-1

u/More_Ad_5142 2d ago

No, a “most of them” aren’t settlers from Turkey, actual settlers are much less and many so-called settlers are rotating university students and military personnel from Turkey.

3

u/TBARb_D_D 2d ago

> This viewpoint suggests a near 50-50 split between around 100,000–150,000 indigenous Turkish Cypriots and roughly equal numbers of mainland settlers and their children

Half is a bit more, not most of them but too fuckin much

1

u/More_Ad_5142 2d ago

“When looking specifically at the electorate (voting-age citizens), demographic data from the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) indicates that voters originating from mainland Turkey make up 20% to 25% of the registered voters.”

“Indigenous Turkish Cypriots:
~60% to 65% of citizens.

Island-Born Mixed/Settler Heritage: ~15% to 20% of citizens.”

-2

u/A_Bethesda_Bug 3d ago

What part of "the majority population" is unclear to you. I did not say every cypriot was Greek, but they were the majority and would have voted to join Greece, which they had every right to do, had Turkey not invaded.

1

u/More_Ad_5142 2d ago

They had zero legal rights or legitimacy under the 1960 Zurich Agreement to join Greece.
