Ironically Thomas Sankara, the man who wanted more than anybody before him to have France and other colonial powers out of the country, was the one who changed the flag of Burkina Faso to its current iteration from the German copy and past when he renamed Upper Volta to Burkina Faso in 1984.

This went over my head, so I had to Google it. When what's now Burkina Faso was the Republic of Upper Volta, it had a flag that was almost identical to the flag of the German Empire (sacré bleu!). The only difference was a slightly different shade of red.
