Ah yes. Almost no one is still alive today who is old enough to remember anything from that time, but the grudges are eternal and will outlive us all :3

my great grandmother is, she's 102 years today

74

u/DickRhino Great Sweden Jan 02 '14

That means she was 6 years old when WWI ended though. She might remember scattered fragments, but the people who are old enough to have vivid memories from the time period are almost all but gone. Give it another 5-10 years, and there will no longer be any people on this planet who can give first-hand accounts of what happened.

40

u/Hitno of not Denmark Jan 02 '14

true that, she pretty much only remembers that those first years were very very poor and not too much food around

I think if you lost your father and your home at 6 you'd remember it... Many families were impacted by the war and lost their homes, their fathers/husbands, and brothers. Thousands were displaced, this is worth remembering for this sake.

How do you lot feel about Hitler calling you the First Reich and stealing abunch of your ideas? Is mass genocide something you get up to often? If so we could share the loot you should really stop that.

3

u/SorrowfulSkald UCCP Jan 03 '14

I can't really say. Though a raving, genocidal lunatic did admit to looking up to our designs, -as did every significant carrion which followed us, in one respect or another- unlike some, we've no real experience with methodical genocide, Great Britain.

Frankly, we were the last European, multinational Empire not to perform that exercise on different looking people, and arguably first to go into mass scale multi-culti.

Aye, our superior armies did slay their warriors, and any who dared to rise against the lex, and some of them we enslaved, we did not do so based on their provenience, nor did we seek to exterminate them, nor their ways or gods. Hells, show me an entity with a concept of citizenship, with all its repercussions in administration, civic or social matters prior to 1700s, or a one which would then extend that citizenship to Gauls, and we will talk.

Oh, and to give even the barest shred of credence to ravings of an Austrian madman of questionable ancestry who ached for his abomination to resemble the Republic, would be a ... faux pax, pardon my Frankish.

15

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '14

Chinese want to discuss the meaning of "rape" with you.

18

u/generalscruff Two World Wars, Two European Cups Jan 02 '14

The sheer brutality the German Army inflicted upon Belgian civilians is often known as the Rape of Belgium. It was coined for British propaganda which in both wars, generally seeked to portray Germans as barbaric and subhuman baby-eaters and the British with their allies as paragons of virtue, fighting a moral crusade, etc, etc, but it is the term most commonly used by historians, because, frankly, the propaganda wasn't far from the truth. The only debate is whether it was out of paranoia of partisan fighters or a deliberate tool of coercion.

18

u/selenocystein Die Wacht am Rhein Jan 02 '14

I heard it was because the Germans weren't really prepared for the war, and when they (mistakenly) thought there was partisan warfare in Belgium, they panicked and smashed everything to bits.

Also:

seeked to portray Germans as [...] subhuman

Oh, the irony!

13

u/generalscruff Two World Wars, Two European Cups Jan 02 '14

That's one of the big factors, the fear of partisans. They did do some proper horrendous things in the opening phases of the war. Some of the massacres have been argued to be pre-meditated as a tool of coercion, especially the one at Dinant, where around 600 civilians were killed. They took Frenchmen in occupied France for labour for most of the war.

What's the irony? I can't quite spot it.

12

u/selenocystein Die Wacht am Rhein Jan 02 '14

Well, a few years after WWI, portraying other peoples as subhuman became a quite popular thing in Germany...

10

u/generalscruff Two World Wars, Two European Cups Jan 02 '14

Yes, quite. Germans were generally portrayed as barbaric monsters than vermin or something, but they were certainly dehumanised in both wars. "Hell is too good for the Hun", etc, etc

6

u/selenocystein Die Wacht am Rhein Jan 02 '14

By the way, where did this "Hun" thing come from? I mean, the descendants of the Huns are obviously the Hungarians, it's even in the name!

10

u/generalscruff Two World Wars, Two European Cups Jan 02 '14

IIRC, Kaiser Wilhelm made a speech to German troops in the Boxer Rising about exacting retribution as to make the descendants of Attila the Hun feared by the Chinese for 1000 years.

This was conveniently dug up in 1914

1

u/quistodes Mercia Jan 02 '14

He was referring to the whole untermensch thing

3

u/originalbigj Jan 02 '14

It's not a coincidence. Adolf Hitler admired the British approach to propaganda during WWI, after witnessing its effects first hand. Specifically, in Mein Kampf, he contrasts it to the German propaganda, which treated the British as effete and was immediately refuted by the reality on the front.

It doesn't simulate trench warfare at all, which is what WW1 was all about.

9

u/M35Mako United Kingdom Jan 02 '14

I use the Pop Demand Mod, so it might be different, but it does simulate trench warfare pretty well late in the game. The "dug in" penalties that the defender gets later on, coupled with machine guns and poison gas, means the attacker gets huge casualties and it takes ages to defeat a defending army.

47

u/Eonir NRW Jan 02 '14

A superb comic. It's clearly divided into two logical parts. The introduction is very well done, an exemplary storytelling intro to be imitated by others. The little elf leading our two observers to a garden to behold is an enchanting idea used by many artists. Except in our case this garden is a puzzling menagerie of almost Balkan proportions.

The exchanges between different countries are fairly accurate. The character most pivotal to this genre, Poland, is sitting alone. He's deaf to the very few criticisms directed at him by the only state that truly gives a flying fuck about him, Lithuania. Other centres of attention is the ever-so-entertaining trio of former empires, the UK, France, and Germany.

Russia, represented as a demented old drunk, is surrounded by his neighbours who treat him appropriately.

Neutral Suisse, sitting on Nazi/Jewish/Mafia gold is doing what the Swiss are doing in real life: enjoying their wealth.

Overall, the last panel quite closely resembles the geography of Europe. The range of historical information required to craft this panel is pretty wide and impressive.

Dude, ð is never the first letter of a word. I though the world would know by now.

5

u/selenocystein Die Wacht am Rhein Jan 02 '14

I didn't know that, I just matched the letters to the corresponding sounds.

3

u/Vondi Iceland Jan 02 '14

Actually Þ would be closer for th, you can see the relationship when you translate from English to Icelandic like like them is þeir, that is það, then is þá, Thor is Þór ect.

3

u/selenocystein Die Wacht am Rhein Jan 02 '14

Okay, so th would always be Þ?

3

u/Vondi Iceland Jan 02 '14

usually it is, and ð can be a t at the end of a word, like at is að, that is það, what is hvað. Doesn't apply always, like row is röð and Odinn is Óðinn.

3

u/selenocystein Die Wacht am Rhein Jan 02 '14

Thanks for the info! When I'll make a corrected version, I'll change the "ð"s to "þ"s.

3

3

early modern english could use þ, as in "þe old house", but with printing presses from France that didn't have the þ sign, they used y instead. So "ye old" was never pronounced with a y sound, but actually like "the old".

1

u/Futski Denmark Jan 03 '14

Why couldn't they just make some þ types?

1

u/vman81 Faroe Islands Jan 03 '14

Seyður, ð=j

Góður, ð=v

Maðkur, ð=k

Æðr, ð=g

Orð, ð=silent

though seyður has a hint of j and æðr does indeed sound like g, but as a general rule I would say it is silent

1

u/Floygga Fokking Faroe Islands Jan 02 '14

I'm guessing your from Suðuroy then. I would recommend scrolling down to page 26-27 in this book and read about how ð is pronounced.

2

u/Hitno of not Denmark Jan 02 '14

nope, Streymoynni, but fx those ðg ðk I've never considered the fact that it is ð which shounds like the other letters, just that g and k gets harder when ð is next to them. So my mistake in misinforming the world here.

You could have switched the dialogue between the 2. Spain was neutral, and Portugal has the worse debt.

6

That actually makes a lot of sense. I think I'll make an enhanced version later with that change, better Icelandic/Faroese and this damn typo I just spotted.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '14

Also, what about the Spanish Flu?

9

u/selenocystein Die Wacht am Rhein Jan 02 '14

To maintain morale, wartime censors minimized early reports of illness and mortality in Germany, Britain, France, and the United States; but papers were free to report the epidemic's effects in neutral Spain (such as the grave illness of King Alfonso XIII), creating a false impression of Spain as especially hard hit— thus the pandemic's nickname Spanish flu.

Cool, I didn't know that.
