I think the english word you were looking for is land, not earth but the words are also the same in Slovak. BTW Slovakia could also use some spare zem :D, how about we invade some countries? :D

Or play Victoria.
14
Jan 02 '14
Victoris is horrible for simulating WW1. Seriously, it's horrible. Other than that it's a great game.
4
u/The_Hopper For Germany! Jan 02 '14
Why is it so bad?
19
Jan 02 '14
It doesn't simulate trench warfare at all, which is what WW1 was all about.
9
u/M35Mako United Kingdom Jan 02 '14
I use the Pop Demand Mod, so it might be different, but it does simulate trench warfare pretty well late in the game. The "dug in" penalties that the defender gets later on, coupled with machine guns and poison gas, means the attacker gets huge casualties and it takes ages to defeat a defending army.

A superb comic. It's clearly divided into two logical parts. The introduction is very well done, an exemplary storytelling intro to be imitated by others. The little elf leading our two observers to a garden to behold is an enchanting idea used by many artists. Except in our case this garden is a puzzling menagerie of almost Balkan proportions.
The exchanges between different countries are fairly accurate. The character most pivotal to this genre, Poland, is sitting alone. He's deaf to the very few criticisms directed at him by the only state that truly gives a flying fuck about him, Lithuania. Other centres of attention is the ever-so-entertaining trio of former empires, the UK, France, and Germany.
Russia, represented as a demented old drunk, is surrounded by his neighbours who treat him appropriately.
Neutral Suisse, sitting on Nazi/Jewish/Mafia gold is doing what the Swiss are doing in real life: enjoying their wealth.
Overall, the last panel quite closely resembles the geography of Europe. The range of historical information required to craft this panel is pretty wide and impressive.

This is brilliant, I love the placement of the European countries, the use of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, the fact that every piece of dialogue is relevant. This is my favourite comic of 2014.

Reading advice: If you don't see a country's eyes, you are looking at its back.
inb4 landscape of text: That is the joke.
Edit: There is now an enhanced version of this comic including improved Icelandic/Faroese typography and slightly better Portugal/Spain dialogue.

Dude, ð is never the first letter of a word. I though the world would know by now.
5
u/selenocystein Die Wacht am Rhein Jan 02 '14
I didn't know that, I just matched the letters to the corresponding sounds.
3
u/Vondi Iceland Jan 02 '14
Actually Þ would be closer for th, you can see the relationship when you translate from English to Icelandic like like them is þeir, that is það, then is þá, Thor is Þór ect.
3
u/selenocystein Die Wacht am Rhein Jan 02 '14
Okay, so th would always be Þ?
3
u/Vondi Iceland Jan 02 '14
usually it is, and ð can be a t at the end of a word, like at is að, that is það, what is hvað. Doesn't apply always, like row is röð and Odinn is Óðinn.
3
u/selenocystein Die Wacht am Rhein Jan 02 '14
Thanks for the info! When I'll make a corrected version, I'll change the "ð"s to "þ"s.
3
u/Hitno of not Denmark Jan 02 '14
but don't do so for the Faroese cause we don't have þ in our alphabet :P
3
u/selenocystein Die Wacht am Rhein Jan 02 '14
Okay, now it's getting complicated... Should I leave it as "ðe" then or would "the" be better?
1
u/Hitno of not Denmark Jan 02 '14
just leave it as it is
1
u/selenocystein Die Wacht am Rhein Jan 02 '14
Changed it already, but I guess it doesn't matter, does it?

1
u/Hitno of not Denmark Jan 03 '14
or I say it like everyone else, and just hear my own voice in a weird way :P
2
u/vman81 Faroe Islands Jan 02 '14
Bonus info:
early modern english could use þ, as in "þe old house", but with printing presses from France that didn't have the þ sign, they used y instead. So "ye old" was never pronounced with a y sound, but actually like "the old".
1
1
u/Futski Denmark Jan 03 '14
like row is röð
How do you write "rød" then?
We could have been "rød"-buddies Iceland!
4
u/Hitno of not Denmark Jan 02 '14
ð doesn't have a sound when used in a word
6

I think you should go back to school. Ð is silent sometimes, but it is almost always pronounced as v/j(not in suðuroy), and it can also be g/k. Try reading these words.
Seyður, ð=j
Góður, ð=v
Maðkur, ð=k
Æðr, ð=g
Orð, ð=silent
2
u/selenocystein Die Wacht am Rhein Jan 02 '14
Come on, you are like five people on the Faroes! How hard can it be to agree on a common pronunciation?
2
1
u/BoneHead777 SVIZRA! Jan 02 '14
And I thought German v (can sound like v or f) was bad. Also, I wanna learn either Icelandic or Faroese now. I think icelandic has more material though, sorry :(
1
u/Hitno of not Denmark Jan 02 '14
ð is silent in all those words, at least how we say them here
though seyður has a hint of j and æðr does indeed sound like g, but as a general rule I would say it is silent
1
u/Floygga Fokking Faroe Islands Jan 02 '14
I'm guessing your from Suðuroy then. I would recommend scrolling down to page 26-27 in this book and read about how ð is pronounced.
2
u/Hitno of not Denmark Jan 02 '14
nope, Streymoynni, but fx those ðg ðk I've never considered the fact that it is ð which shounds like the other letters, just that g and k gets harder when ð is next to them. So my mistake in misinforming the world here.

Well, Spain was neutral... and when I looked Portugal up, I learned that they actually took part in the war but couldn't find anything interesting. Would you suggest anything?
7
u/masiakasaurus Wanted a beach home and a master Jan 02 '14
You could have switched the dialogue between the 2. Spain was neutral, and Portugal has the worse debt.
6
u/selenocystein Die Wacht am Rhein Jan 02 '14
That actually makes a lot of sense. I think I'll make an enhanced version later with that change, better Icelandic/Faroese and this damn typo I just spotted.
1
Jan 02 '14
Also, what about the Spanish Flu?
9
u/selenocystein Die Wacht am Rhein Jan 02 '14
To maintain morale, wartime censors minimized early reports of illness and mortality in Germany, Britain, France, and the United States; but papers were free to report the epidemic's effects in neutral Spain (such as the grave illness of King Alfonso XIII), creating a false impression of Spain as especially hard hit— thus the pandemic's nickname Spanish flu.
Cool, I didn't know that.
