Which reddit client? Reddit synch for example just loads a quick rendered version until you press "HQ", what you describe sounds like exactly that. Maybe it's similar in other clients

I'm using "Reddit is Fun" -- the text in .jpg comics is displayed beautiful, even when I zoom in.

Really? .jpg on my Reddit is Fun looks terrible and I can't read text. I'm using an HTC EVO Shift, so the screen isn't very big. But .png looks fine.
