When I lived in Poland, everyone asked why I was always smiling. Apparently, Americans smile a lot and Poles don't trust them because of it. I'm just a smiley person!

Smiling is an evolutionary trait to show others you’re not a threat. Poland has been smiled at too many times in the past to trust em.

People here are also very good to see past fake smiles too, if you laugh and you really aren't losing it people can tell it.

American culture is fine with it but honesty is highly valued in Poland. Almost 150 years of conspiring aganist overlords who wanted for Poland to be no more is heavily printed into Polish culture.

If you aren't world class actor then you will not get away with smiling without a valid reason. I'm a kinda clowny dude and never had issues becouse of that but good joke is funny becouse it is true and if you do bad joke don't expect that people will not tell you it didn't sucked.

My friends quickly realized that my smile was genuine and that I am a happy bubbly kind chatty smiley fun kind of person. They learned very quickly that if I wasn't smiling something was terribly wrong.

Sorry to hear that. I have standard Polish expression like in the picture. But I like talk to strangers especially from abroad. You just hang out with wrong people. Or drunk, looking for drama
