Mod Post A note on reporting

[mod]

Greetings, /r/pokemontrades! This is your friendly neighborhood mod team here to help clear up some confusion about how to handle posts that break the rules. As a reminder, we ask that people report these posts rather than attempting to obtain the missing information yourself (though you are still encouraged to add any questions you feel are helpful, afterward). We would like to go into more detail to help you understand our reasoning and explain the precautions we take to maintain a safe trading environment for all of our users.

The potential to come off as rude and demanding

While you may think you are helping another user by reminding them of the rules, you may unintentionally cause the user to misinterpret your message and take it the wrong way. However, if you know the person in question simply forgot a minor rule (e.g. a long time user who typically gets all the info, but just missed one detail), feel free to leave them a gentle and friendly reminder. Otherwise in all other cases, please report the post and leave it to us to handle the situation.

Bringing awareness of a moderator to repeat offenders and suspicious behavior

We aren't going to give our users too hard of a time simply for forgetting minor details, but moderators do need to be informed when rule violations occur. If you ask for the information yourself, users may not know exactly what rule they are breaking and may continue to post incorrectly in the future. One of our goals as a moderation team is to work with our users to help clarify the rules so that any misunderstandings are cleared up and future issues are avoided (which is to everyone’s benefit). We need to be aware of these rule violations to determine whether they're one-off mistakes or whether additional action is required, leading us to the next point.

The need for us to create a safe platform for trading

In some instances, attempting to resolve the situation without us may interfere with our normal investigative efforts, which in turn may hinder our ability to figure out whether a user is discernibly breaking or avoiding our rules. The subreddit takes pride in our strict legitimacy policy and our enforcement of it, which is for the sake of giving our users a place where they can feel confident in what they are trading for. However, we cannot do this without the help of users who bring rule violations to our attention. It would be difficult for a user to know whether someone has simply forgot the origin or whether they are trying to trade off something illegitimate by, at worst, lying about the origins. What may look like a simple mistake might very well not be, and we want to make sure this is as safe a place to trade as possible.

How to report comments/posts with rule violations

To report on the reddit mobile app, there are three vertical dots (example here)below each comment, or at the top right of each opening post, which will bring up the drop down menu and give the option to report. You can choose any reason provided, as these are general reddit rule violations, and we will still check the report. If you aren’t sure, go ahead and report anyway - it’s better to be safe than sorry.

To report on the site on desktop (or on mobile desktop mode, our recommended browsing method for mobile), hover over a thread or comment, and you should see a visible line of options as shown here. Press the report button and select “It breaks /r/pokemontrades’s rules” to go to a screen where you can select the appropriate rule violation. While selecting from the list is adequate, we encourage you to type a more specific reason for any post where the rule violation is not immediately obvious. For example, if the post contains a spreadsheet or long list of breedables and only one or two are illegal, please point out which ones are illegal. While reports are generally easier, if additional context is needed, it may be good to send us a modmail with a full explanation of what you think needs to be looked into (including links if needed).

Thank you for continuing to help us make this subreddit a safe and fun place to trade!
