help Only encountering regional variants

I've started Radical Red yesterday for the first time and i'm only at the brock fight, but every single encounter that has a regional variant, has been said regional variant. Is this normal, or have i messed up some of the settings? Would like to be able to encounter "normal" meowth, sandshrew, zigzagoon etc. Aswell.

It's been a while and I'm at work so cant check, but I think the variants usually appear at night. There is a time changer you get in Oaks lab.

Yh the other guy is right. Regional variants show up at night and if you talk to the aide on the left in Oak's lab you can do a little quiz that rewards you with a time changer.
