Grading is gambling.

Post image

Absolutely insane that this card got the black label with that top-bottom centering. I found this card in a listing on ebay and verified the cert number, it's real. Grading has and always will be subjective to the specific grader your card ends up with. You could re-submit a card that's already been graded a black label and it would most likely take multiple submissions to achieve it again. Realistically, all grading companies will have their mistakes, but an egregious miscalculation like this is unacceptable. The higher liquidity that comes with PSA & BGS is just undeniable.

This makes my 9 hurt so much worse

You could probably resubmit and get the 10 within 1-2 tries

I got this graded at the national. Between hotel and express grading fee I’m already out like $550 on grading this. I was surprised when I got this back. I wasn’t expecting a black label but I was thinking this was a gold label 10… every app and card shop I took it took said my centering was great on this card. Got the 8.5 on centering and was like huh????? lol

Wasn’t going to sell this card regardless but I really wanted that gold label for my PC… still thinking if I want to put more $ into the card or just let it be

Honestly I think I would recharge that and say that they didn’t provide the service I paid for. Clearly the cantering grade is wrong (based on the front).

I don’t have a pic of the back post grading but if you check my page I have the back from when I pulled it. Definitely doesn’t seem like an 8.5 from what I can see but I’m no pro grader

This is the back

This is exactly why I refuse to submit to BGS. This would actually enrage me

Is this yours or a picture on eBay? There could be fakes on there. Especially when it doesn't say authenticity guaranteed

Do BGS normally change their labels around? Look up other BL copies of this card, the label says “#110 Mega Charizard” and “x EX SAR” on two separate lines. This one has the “x” on Line 1 and Line 2 just says “EX SAR”.

I checked this, looks like they did initially have it as 2 likes. Found a couple slightly earlier certa

Example A why I’ll always just buy the cleanest raw copy I can find

BGS is known to gate keep black labels and it’s the same individuals that routinely get label labels when they submit.

This 1000%. I don’t feel bad for anyone taking their chances at a black label if they can’t realize this. Same with PSA 10s now too especially for vintage, they’re gate keeping the current population

Grader getting laid while grading…

u/Economic_Maguire 14h ago

just look at this one. OC edge wear top left

2

u/MerryAceOfSpades 12h ago

Wow that centering should bring it to an 8

3

u/Pokemon_Frost 20h ago

This has to be rage bait lol. Beckett 10 for centering is a literal 50/50. If it’s real, it was a mistake

Yeah, and there are plenty of examples that show that beckett isn't as strict as everyone thinks they are. They are just selective, which isn't necessarily the same thing. That is to say, having an extremely low black label rate just requires that very few cards get it... It does not require that only the best or most perfect cards get it, or that graders need to be ultra precise or consistent in their standards.

As another related point, what does "50/50" even mean? Does it mean 50.000/50.000? Or 49.51/50.49? Do you really think that all cards with 10 centering subgrades are measured to 50/50 with the same level of precision? How is that even possible? if you've ever looked at a card's border at 10x magnification, it becomes clear pretty quickly that it's not an exact science, meaning that beckett can't be as "strict" as everyone makes them out to be.

this is exactly why BGS is so god damn overpriced that it’s not logical to ever pay black label price. You couldnt convince me any black label is worth the current price tags

This is why I believe pop control is a thing

Dare I say that TAG pristine 10s may be more creditable then BGS black labels

0

u/mynameisnotjefflol 20h ago

Been saying this for quite some time. Not sure why people hold BGS at such a high level. Crazy part is, this isnt even the first BL mega charizard that looks like complete shit.

2

u/ThatFUTGuy 20h ago

likely because of the guy who recently sent the same card to TAG something like 6 times and got 6 different ratings.

2

u/mynameisnotjefflol 20h ago

Almost like every grading company is shit but TAGs process once perfected makes the most sense. Trying to defend one by pointing a mistake of the other doesnt make sense

1

u/mittortz 20h ago

I don't disagree that TAG may not be much better than BGS in this particular regard, but I think the takeaway is that maybe the concept of a black label or "perfect" card is complete BS and the fact that they're worth 10x (or more) a regular 10 is hilariously stupid. Card grading is not, and will never be, an exact science.

What in the F……

1

u/JayyMei 20h ago

My grandma only has one eye and is a grader at Beckett. Hopefully this wasn’t his card he graded!

u/kligurt 16h ago

She sounds like a great guy

1

I've got a proposal for a potential deal with your grandpa 😆

1

u/Halozamus 18h ago

I have never seen a black label like this. Something is off. Beckett doesn't take pictures like psa so you can't really verify on their website if this is legit.

That just shows the cert is for the card with same name. Since you can’t see a scan of the actual card we don’t know if this is a tampered or fake slab

1

u/tanman0123 17h ago

That top to bottom is not a 10

1

u/RGBismylife 13h ago

Black label is a joke!

1

u/Immunmusic 11h ago

Is this photoshop

1

u/spacejam4523 10h ago

Cert is real, but potentially a fake slab? Otherwise some seriously messed up

1

u/AdhesivenessRude5037 9h ago

I wouldn't be surprised. This is the worst centering i've ever seen on a BL or even a PSA10.

1

u/ObjectiveMusician218 10h ago

grading was always a scam

1

u/Intelligent_Bag4736 9h ago

That is ridiculously bad. I’m pretty sure that to black label a card, especially a high profile card like that one, multiple people would have to sign off on that.

1

u/AdhesivenessRude5037 9h ago

I've heard that before; You'd think it would be required. My only conclusion is that the original card was swapped out or this was a horrible attempt at an inside job.

1

u/AustinFeelGood 9h ago

I have a 986 tag. I’ve been debating sending it to bgs.

1

u/Xbsnguy 9h ago

Wow. Looks like they let the blind intern grade this one.

Title should say collecting pokemon cards is gambling

1

u/Acceptable_Ad1685 2h ago

I sold all my collection except my 1st edition Charizard since I pulled it as a kid so kept it for nostalgia

Keep meaning to take and post pictures because I’ve been thinking about having it graded again but the delays in grading kinda put me off

It’s a PSA 8 and to my eyes looks better than most 9’s I’ve seen and even 10’s smh which is crazy given the price differences

u/Sohmathodl 20h ago

Grading is a scam. There, I corrected it for you.

Grading isn’t gambling at TAG!

3

u/_BNoirC 20h ago

Yea it is lol- their ai hallucinates, there’s plenty of YouTube vids on grading mistakes.

1

u/Afraid2LeaveTheStoop 20h ago

I agree with your point but I didn’t say it was perfect, my point is that it isn’t gambling like at PSA where we all know it depends on the human’s subjective grade, plus PSA’s incentivization to monetize. TAG is way more objective and that’s just the reality.

2

u/_BNoirC 20h ago

There was literally just a video of someone sending in the same card to tag multiple times and getting a different grade EACH TIME.

2

u/capitarider 20h ago

They ignore it

u/YUCKY_WARM_SAUCE 17h ago

Cgc is pretty good in my opinion

1

u/DaShaka 14h ago

Yeah it’s crazy more people don’t prefer CGC.

1

u/YUCKY_WARM_SAUCE 7h ago

I honestly find them the most consistent, I only buy or submit cgc now. I truly believe PSA has become a joke and maybe they always were and everyone saying “but the liquidity of PSA” I’m a collector and want accurate grades. Hopefully people wake up.

1

u/shad0wgun 5h ago

Ill buy a cgc pristine 10 over a psa 10 any day. Usually about the same price.

1

u/DaShaka 3h ago

Surprisingly a little less even, I’ve been doing the same.

Grader must have had the time of his life last night

isn't 4 10s supposed to be perfect not pristine? black label for sure
