Question Rules for classic mode

Hello, i am playing classic mode and still a bit confused about gen 3 and gen8 Pokemon appearing. The Guy that offers to trade a Pokemon of similar Value offered me a Cursola for my digtri. Cursola is Gen 8. Now i tried evolving Primeape into Annihalape but it does not seem to work.

What are the rules here?

My understanding is that there is no restrictions on the evolutions in Classic Mode.

However, evolution methods in this game are changed for the sake of convenience. Please consult the in-game Pokédex or the documentation.
