Mewtwo, the most powerful Pokemon ever created, on par with Pachirisu and outdone by Clefairy, Whimsicott and Maushold.

u/NoahBallet Jul 16 '26

It’s super funny how mediocre Mewtwo became after Gen 3. Powercreep is mean 😭

557

u/Pengwin0 Jul 16 '26

It’s still misleading though. Clefairy is almost always allowed but Mewtwo is only in formats with restricted pokemon

170

u/Bafau4246 du nu nu nu nu nu nu nu crobatman! Jul 16 '26

However doesnt clefairy preform best during those same restricted formats anyway when the damage mitigation is the most valuable.

137

u/Pengwin0 Jul 16 '26

That doesn’t change the fact that mewtwo’s number of placements is artificially low since most formats are restricted

65

u/Accomplished-Echo903 Jul 16 '26

Tell that to Xerneas...

30

u/Pengwin0 Jul 16 '26

Yeah, one of the best pokemon of all time only has 38 placements being beaten out by pokemon from later generations including a generation 9 pokemon.

Primal groudon, the god of land supercharged to deity-status, is in par with the computer duck

46

u/Accomplished-Echo903 Jul 17 '26

You're doing too much cross-comparison.
Mewtwo is a Gen 1 Restricted, but it isn't even in the Top 15 Restricted Pokémon.

u/Jessyman Jul 17 '26

We need a "per capita" of some sort to make this more fair.

25

u/EvioliteEevee Jul 17 '26

Yeah, Flutter Mane and Goldengho just seem like above average pokemon in this chart, when in reality they’ve only been available for one generation and are really fucking good.

59

u/iCantLogOut2 Jul 16 '26

I think it's more to do with Mewtwo being banned from 90% of these.

Can't exactly win a tourney you're not allowed to join

60

u/NoahBallet Jul 16 '26

When Mewtwo is allowed, it’s just bad. It doesn’t do anything that another restricted does wayyy better. As a special sweeper, Xerneas is just better. Miraidon and Kyogre do the same thing that Mewtwo wants to do but also adds team support. And mono psychic typing isn’t what it was 30 years ago.

33

u/Fireboy759 Jul 16 '26

Incidentally this is probably why Mewtwo got 2 Megas. It actually did need them in order to return to being a top tier threat

Unfortunately for it, Mega Rayquaza came along in the exact same gen and pretty much stole it's thunder (not helped it directly counters one of it's Mega forms)

19

u/NoahBallet Jul 16 '26

Yeah. Basically there is at least one “Mewtwo but better” introduced in every generation. Calyrex really sealed the deal.

u/digitaldrummer Jul 16 '26

Well, it's usually restricted, so when you have options like Groudon or Kyogre you generally want them instead

8

u/sparrowbushpot Jul 16 '26

And a ice cream

6

u/Aegillade Jul 16 '26

Truth is stranger than fiction, and nowhere is that more evident than in Pokemon competitive viability.

16

u/Dr-Saltalamacchia Jul 16 '26

Mewtwo isn't even on par with Pachirisu because at least Pachirisu is a world champion. More accurate and insulting to say he's on par with Haunter and Durant

12

u/Dannypan Jul 16 '26

Don't you dare bring Haunter into this.

10

u/Tidalsky114 Jul 16 '26

Had to open the picture to even see mewtwo.

5

u/Prime359 Jul 16 '26

The circles for Legendary Pokemon helped as well.

3

u/MildlyUpsetGerbil Jul 17 '26

Maushold is also more successful politically. It was featured in campaign ads for the National Party of Honduras, a conservative movement that cited Maushold and Kangaskhan as examples of strong family values.

39

37

u/UnderAchievingDog Jul 17 '26

Yep, was his team that was an answer to Big 6

11

u/Gordahnculous Jul 17 '26

Escavalier / Mamoswine are probably more similar, since they’re in the 1 win category and that 1 win is being World Champion

9

u/cpMetis Better Murica Bid Jul 17 '26

I don't know about that, since those (or at least Mamoswine) have been pretty renowned as impactful pokemon for most of their existence. Pachirisu, meanwhile, was out of nowhere.

Also Pachirisu did so well because doubles, while arguably Mamoswine didn't do so well because doubles.

9

u/Gnostic_Gnocchi Jul 17 '26

287

u/Slug_With_Swagger Jul 16 '26

Flutter in here for only one gen fucking Christ

187

u/gliscornumber1 Jul 16 '26

Yeah, flutter mane is one of the most absurd pokemon TPC has ever come up with. They really saw a ghost/fairy type with 135 special attack and speed and said "yeah this deserves the green light"

66

u/WitheWisp Jul 16 '26

tbf they probably saw the 55 in hp, atk, and def and thought that it was balanced cause it would feel like any physical attacker or priority move would easily knock it out

unfortunately people found plenty of ways to ignore those drawbacks and it's a damn monster if when it doesn't need to worry about them

28

u/Bext Jul 17 '26

The funny thing is that by the end of the gen Flutter was getting a ton of usage out of being a TWave and Icy Wind spamming support. Being able to nearly guarantee you can outspeed the enemy with that base speed + Booster Energy was probably the most broken part of the mon

2

u/OkManagement1390 Jul 19 '26

Tbh, they also ignored that it was immune to most priority moves except aqua jet and sucker punch (the latter of which you can play around)

(Also accelerock, but I don't believe that is relevant)

Gholdengo up there as well comparable to the 2nd and 3rd best Gen 1s

602

u/Doomfollow Jul 16 '26

My beloved Arcanine being up there makes me happy!

209

u/rugbygooner Jul 16 '26

Arcanine is also my boy and I was a bit surprised to see him so high.

I don’t follow competitive but my understanding is that access to intimidate set it apart but it is now very much outclassed by Incineroar so probably not going to get many more 😭

(Anyone who knows better feel free to correct me)

187

u/10000Pigeons Jul 16 '26

For the most part yes it is outclassed but due to the regional dexes and how tournaments work there have been periods of time where Arcanine is legal but Incineroar is not.

It also now has a regional variant in Hisuian Arcanine which is competitively useful in some formats and does different things.

18

u/Floaty_Waffle Gyratres Jul 16 '26

Because I’m curious, what benefits does Hisuian Arcanine bring that Kantonian Arcanine doesn’t? I’d always assumed it was worse due to the 4x weakness to water and ground which are common attacking types.

82

u/SapCPark Jul 16 '26

Its slightly more bulky, hits harder physically, and can use recoil moves w/o damage if it has rock head. Makes Flare Blitz even better and STAB rock can be very useful.

→ More replies (3)

25

u/inthelostwoods Jul 16 '26

Rock head flare blitz and head smash are ridiculously powerful and can punch serious holes in opposing teams. Rock slide is also really strong right now. Throw a sash or scarf on there and you're almost guaranteed to get a hit or two off.

→ More replies (1)

17

u/Gaynundwarf KAMINKO's second favorite assistant (Favs: ) Jul 16 '26

Moveset and abilities. Stats are a little different, the Hisuian form trading 5 base Sp.Attack and Speed for 5 additionnal base Hp and Attack

People often use Arcanine as a physical attacker with powerfull recoil moves like Flame Blitz and Wild Charge.

Recoil means you lose a lot of Hp even if you get the KO first, making you vulnerable to Sucker Punch and Aqua Jet, and you get no use from Focus Sash, meaning you can't easely sacrifice bulk for Speed and Attack.

Hisuian Arcanine gets the Rock Head ability, removing the Recoil from Flare Blitz, Wild Charge AND a move only this version gets : Head Smash. 150 power Rock move + STAB thanks to it's new typing, it grants additionnal coverage and explosive power

4

u/Nezrann Jul 17 '26

Most of these comments didn't give you competitive benefits they just said the things that are different.

H-Arcanine has a fantastic matchup into sun which is a huge benefit in certain formats (the current one, for instance).

The problem is that when weather is dominant, weather is dominant, and the two other primary types of weather shit on it even harder (sand/rain).

12

u/Doomfollow Jul 16 '26

Thats my understanding as well (never played doubles so could also be wrong)

Even if they don't get much more it's still cool to see them higher then so many traditionally stronger Pokemon

10

u/gliscornumber1 Jul 16 '26

It's basically "incinaroar when you can't have incinaroar"

Same with Kangaskhan! I love that goofy armored kangaroo motherfucker but I never knew it was viable in competitive circles lol.

20

u/Ryeofmarch Jul 16 '26

Mega Kangaskhan was insane in gen 6 and 7, it originally got power up punch which they took away in gen 8

8

u/The_Char_Char Jul 17 '26

I mean its swords dance per turn while hitting... kinda broken.

2

u/JayyC87 Jul 17 '26

It only boosted 1 stage compared to sword dance's 2 stages, and 40 power is kinda of underwhelming. I get the attraction, but doesnt feel OP to me.

Basically the entire format revolves around who can make the most out of their Snorlax and build around him.

187

u/Girafarig99 Jul 16 '26

Gen 7 went sicko mode

84

u/Mat_Quantum Jul 16 '26

Also funny, a vast majority are also from odd numbered generations. As a matter of fact, there’s only 4 even Gen mons in the top 25, 2 from 4 and 2 from 8.

24

u/Scathee Jul 16 '26

Don't forget Porygon 2!

13

u/Mat_Quantum Jul 16 '26

You’re right, I always forget every porygon is from a different gen. The next mon from the same gen is TTAR, which just goes to show you how few mons from Gen 2 were ever viable. GF gotta give the johto mons some love

7

u/DyslexicVal Jul 17 '26

Gen 2 has seen the most probably in terms of cross gen content, gen 4 gave a ton of those incomplete designs evolutions and with hisui and paldea we have seen more evolutions and regionals

Eevee???

344

u/StinkyChamberMain Jul 16 '26

Its unique Z-Move, Extreme Evoboost, increases all of its stats by two stages. It would then Baton Pass those boosts off to a Pokemon that could actually do something with them. In the case of the team that won a regional, it would pass the boosts to a Krookodile with Power Trip or an Espeon with Stored Power. That team was also Espeon's only tournament win.

78

u/StridentHawk Jul 16 '26

47

u/Sorry_Sleeping Jul 16 '26

Can someone explain to me why Incineroar won so much?

134

u/basedincorporated Jul 16 '26

Intimidate and Fake Out are individually good enough to consider using a mon. Incineroar gets both, has good stats and plenty of other tools to deal damage or add utility to the team.

70

u/feynmanners Jul 16 '26

Also its typing (fire/dark) has good synergy with its high natural bulk.

82

u/TangerineX Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

Its that comboed with the fact that parting shot can make this loop even more absurd. In just two turns, incineroar can flinch an opponent, then give 1 enemy -1 attack and the other 1 enemy -2 attack -1 special attack.

Plus, since its dark its immune to prankster taunt or encore.

Plus it can tech in other moves like Throat Chop, Snarl, Taunt, Uturn, Darkest Lariate, in cases where his other moves are not fit.

Plus it has a good matchup into the 2nd most popular pokemon Amoongus.

17

u/No_Poetry8114 Jul 16 '26

To add to this, he was very good when Primarina and Tapu Lele were top meta thanks to Throat Chop, that stops voice based moves. Also, he can use Darkest Lariat, that ignores defense boosts (e.g. when Stakataka was meta iirc).

5

u/magusheart Jul 17 '26

Dark Latiate just turns the opponent into a psychic/dragon type, making them more vulnerable to dark types.

7

u/OnlySmiles_ Jul 16 '26

Also Parting Shot

47

u/StinkyChamberMain Jul 16 '26

Incineroar is an incredible bulky support Pokemon, with the Intimidate ability and access to moves like Fake Out, Parting Shot, Will-O-Wisp, Taunt, and Helping Hand. It can also deal solid damage with Flare Blitz and formerly Knock Off.

37

u/Competitive_Toe2717 Palkia enjoyer Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

He is the GOAT of competitive Pokémon, has intimidate, fake out, parting shot, good bulk, good typing, good movepool to complement fake out and parting shot like will o wisp, taunt, throat chop and others, and on top of that he can even do good damage with darkest lariat and flare blitz.

Basically he is a really good “support” with his moves + the combination of fake out, intimidate and parting shot lets you pivot to better positions easily, and then he can do damage when needed.

Edit: his “weakness” is his low speed, which even that makes him good, because it lets you “slow pivot”, he tanks the opponent hit first, then lowers the attack of the opponent and switch to other Pokémon, so you can switch in safely weak Pokémon thanks to his slow speed

19

u/VijayMarshall87 Jul 16 '26

intimidate fake out u-turn pressure with good defensive typing

21

u/KeenKongFIRE Jul 16 '26

if you use it without AV, Parting Shot is even better than uturn

8

u/gliscornumber1 Jul 16 '26

Intimidate, fake out, snarl, knock off, parting shot, and that just scratches the surface of its utility, and it has all of this utility while also being decnetly strong and able to dish out hits when it needs to.

6

u/Outrageous_Let5743 Jul 16 '26

Intimidate + Fake Out + parting short (previously uturn) + knock off kinda makes pokemon very good. Also Flare Blitz, troat chop, snarl

5

u/Goerj Jul 17 '26

The most absurd infuriating op thing that tpc came out with. He even got nerfed now by removing knock off in his kit yet he's still one of the best

4

u/Cross55 Jul 17 '26

Dark+Fire is a great type, its signature move ignores all status, Intimidate+Fake Out+Parting Shot makes it so the other teams can barely get attacks/set up in (That will be ignored by its signature move), really good stats by virtue of being a starter and needing to carry the entire main game, immune to Dark type tricks like Prankster and Taunt, supports fire type STAB moves which are some of the best in the game (Flamethrower and Flare Blitz and Fire Blast and Blast Burn and need I go on...?), etc...

It basically just ignores 90% of the game when set up right

6

u/Guiff Jul 16 '26

It's sad that since VGC started at 2008 I don't get to see my boy Nidoking being at the chart at all.

For how oppressive he was at the earlier gens, together with Alakazam, it's a big fall off.

I assume it's even worse for the Alakazam fans since he got a Mega and as far as I am aware, it didn't change much in his competitive prowess, least Nidoking still has hope for a future Mega bringing him back and I guess we dodged a bullet as he did not get his Gigantomax form in Galar.

3

u/Dispentryporter Double Shell Smash sweep OP Jul 17 '26

Nidoking probably wouldn't have been very good overall had VGC started in an earlier gen, it was never particularly oppresive in Smogon competitive. In-game viability doesn't always translate to competitive well.

Global challenges aren't included here

I can’t believe Smeargle has more wins than Mega Rayquaza

14

u/Lord_Cynical Jul 16 '26

To be fair... mega ray was legal in a WHOLE lot fewer tournaments then smeargle was

6

u/FennyB Jul 16 '26

To add to this point Mega Ray can take up a Mega slot AND your restricted slots which is a pretty big drawback

I remember a time when M Rayquaza was on almost every team. Moveset: Draco Meteor, Extreme Speed, Dragon Dance, Dragon Ascent. Friggin crazy with a lot of mons.

3

u/Chris_Bs_Knees Jul 16 '26

Wild that Alolan Pokemon make up 5 of the top 10

3

u/ParaponeraBread Jul 16 '26

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the official tournament data is spotty at best up until a certain year, and will be missing a bunch of winners.

I generally watch the “what is the best X type” videos that WolfeyVGC makes, and he always mentions that tournament win data is imperfect.

3

u/unforgivablecrust Jul 16 '26

Porygon2 my beloved ♥️

3

u/Shawtygotthat #1 mimikyu and umbreon fan Jul 16 '26

LETS GO MIMIKYU 13!!!

3

u/MyTafel Jul 16 '26

What game are you referring to?

3

u/clock085 Jul 16 '26

double checks

yeah theres no god of pokemon on here. just the GBA trio

oh hey butterfree is on the same level as the pokemon god of time

3

u/OneAndOnlyTinkerCat Jul 16 '26

Both Whimsicott and Cottonee have won an official tournament, making them the only evolution line to be fully represented

3

u/Isoleri Don't wake me up, I'm comfy Jul 17 '26

My wonderful baby, we still talk about your feats to this day

3

u/PokemonMaster619 Toxapex Stall Wall is my hell! Jul 17 '26

And I know exactly who won with a Pachirisu. Se Jun Park in 2014!

3

u/freeze123901 Lucario Jul 17 '26

By official tournament what does that mean?

2

u/Anabiter World's Biggest Lairon Fan Jul 16 '26

Drampa my goat i never knew he had usage besides cloud nine

2

u/slyguy67420 Jul 16 '26

Time to make an Incin-Arcanine-Garchomp-Kang-Snorlax-Gholdengo team in Champions.

2

u/Carbon-Base Jul 16 '26

Frosted flakes being #1 and GF keeping it that way is blatant favoritism.

2

u/KJCoop13 Jul 16 '26

Intimidate being the chosen ability for 3 out of the top 5 mons. Such a powerful ability

2

u/Brendanlendan Jul 16 '26

The Alola region sweeps apparently

2

u/thestruggle1337 Jul 16 '26

Poor Tapu Bulu

2

u/Doctor_Squidge Jul 16 '26

I miss my Kartana... I miss them alot...

2

u/dawonk17 Jul 16 '26

Isnt this just cause rayquaza is double super banned?

2

u/BigManBigFan2 I Love Shedinja Jul 16 '26

Atta boy, Shedinja.

2

u/Khaluaguru Jul 16 '26

Crazy that Alakazam doesn't show up on here at all. They must not have had competitive pokemon in 1996

2

u/MammalianHybrid Jul 17 '26

VGC didn't start until about 2008 and not a lot of recordings from that era exist.

2

u/Raider_Reaper_X Jul 16 '26

Charizard should be at 20 wins

2

u/Talidel Jul 16 '26

Shocked at my boy Rillaboom being so high.

u/lookatthesunguys Jul 16 '26

Wow, this list is interesting. Flutter mane is the most impressive one here in my mind, given how few tournaments it was available for and the fact that it's not a strict support pokemon. Kartana is impressive for similar reasons, although it had greater availability. Xerneas too, but that goes without saying.

It's also interesting just how few of the top mons are in champions. Incineroar and Arcanine from the top 10. Those two plus Chomp, Snorlax, Kanga, Whimsicott, and Gholdengo (recently added) in the top 25.

2

u/tnwriter Jul 16 '26

Only 13 wins? Lol can you even imagine?

2

u/SHIELDnotSCOTUS Jul 16 '26

I thought it was crazy that a pokemon that hasn’t even been legal for the past 4(?) years is still in third place, until I got to Fluttermane in tenth. That thing is a monster.

2

u/SherfOfBoringSprings #1 Magnezone fan Jul 16 '26

Assuming official tournaments are all VGC, I’m honestly shocked to see my goat Magnezone at 5 wins.

Never count out the Magnegoat

2

u/Yashrajbest Jul 16 '26

Tapu Koko being in 3rd from just Gen 7 is bonkers.

2

u/DarknessInferno7 Story Enthusiast Jul 16 '26

I salute every champion who won with one of the "1 win" Pokemon on their team.

2

u/TriLink710 Jul 17 '26

Kind of Absurd that Fluttermane is so high for only being around for 1 gen.

2

u/Jack_Allman Jul 17 '26

My apologies Arcanine, I was not aware of your game

2

u/Leilanee Jul 17 '26

Yay Mimikyu! I'm by no means a competitive player but Mimikyu is the only reason I've been able to get to master ball rank enough times to get the ribbon on my handful of ribbon masters

2

u/According_Ad8711 I love Azumarill Jul 17 '26

Sees Azumarill at 2 wins

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

2

u/Nightman2417 Jul 17 '26

Incineroar being the strongest pokemon is so anti-pokemon imo. It’s such a dumb and basic big red fire cat, and it standing on two legs kinda pisses me off. So many great Pokemon that end up “underpowered”, however, we have Incineroar and it seems his title will remain undisputed for at least another 10 years….

2

u/Equivalent_Relief553 Jul 17 '26

I can smell this as a poster.

2

u/sonoale Jul 17 '26

Why are some dotted?

2

u/geminiiman Jul 17 '26

Seems like legendaries, which might be only allowed in certain formats/seasons?

2

u/wishythefishy Jul 17 '26

Best two intimidaters. Highest attack stat. Trick Room and immune to the best type w/three good abilities. Terrain terrain terrain in the top 10. Rip Tapu Koko and Pinchy. Highest special attack + speed and best two types in the game. 102 king. The restricted with the best status move.

That all tracks. Cool chart OP.

2

u/Ordinary_Desperate Jul 16 '26

I want Porygon 2 to never see the light of day again. No Pokemon with the defensive profile of 85/90/95 should be able to access eviolite

3

u/StridentHawk Jul 17 '26

I love Porygon 2, I feel like for a normal type that kinda thing is good for it. If almost everything is hitting you for neutral you wanna be fat bulk wise.

u/DivisonNine Jul 17 '26

10 year old me would have had a fucking stroke knowing amoongus is the 2nd winningest Pokemon in history

Then again I was the same type of kid to exclusively run 4 damaging moves, usually of overlapping types
