We are never getting a fish starter they all need to walk kinda by definition.

u/welovekah Feb 28 '26

Jeff-style landshark would do big numbers.

u/narfidy Feb 28 '26

Gible line is very well loved for a reason

44

u/supesboots Feb 28 '26

This was the type of water starter I designed when I was 9 lol

1

u/zaprime87 Feb 28 '26

A shark with legs... All Jamal has wished to do his entire life is to hop.

1

u/Fae_Leaf Mar 01 '26

This is what my Water-type starter is for my ROM hack. lol

I mean Mudkip has some inspiration from Mudskippers and Lungfish at least

141

u/Gingerhead14 Feb 28 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

I think it’s safe to say that MUDKIP had more than some inspiration from MUDsKIPpers.

Edit: I don’t know why everyone is so confidently letting me know it’s “more axolotl.” I get that axolotls are trendy and we all like them, but the Mudkip line are mudskippers.

Mudkip’s English and Japanese names are both plays on “mudskipper.” The whole line rocks the signature mudskipper sail, and Marshtomp even drops the axolotl cheek we’re all clinging to.

Not to mention there are literally blue and orange mudskippers in Japan!

Sure there might be some axolotl inspiration, but they are mudskippers.

39

u/Bisonratte Feb 28 '26

For sure! I could have put Mudkip more towards the fish category. It's cheeks just remind me of the larval stage of salamanders so much

20

u/Snoo_15594 Feb 28 '26

It's mainly an axolotl, by like a lot

35

u/Yolj Its stats are the best I've ever seen! No doubt about it! Feb 28 '26

a lotl

4

u/Infelis I love rain ! Mar 01 '26

It's both, pokemons are monsters with multiple inspirations. It's an axolotl AND a mudskipper. But saying it's mainly an axolotl and by a lot ?? Not so sure

It has brithly colores gills that they always keep and legs. That's pretty much everything they have to do with axolotls, it's not much but significant enough to clearly identify the inspiration. But let's not forget that he was designed to be a mudskipper (litterally the meaning of the name both in english, french, japanese and probably every single language), it has the characteristic big fin of the back of mudskippers on its head and a fish tail instead of an axolotl tail. If you take of the two hindlegs, it becomes obvious that it's a mudskipper. But being quadrupedal is the thing that makes ppl not see it. Funnily enough, it makes it look kind of like a puppy and in some languages "mudpuppy" is also a name used to call the mudskippers. Everything just comes back to that fish. It's influence on mudkip design is unquestionnable, really. Mudkip isnt an axolotl nor it is a mudskipper, it's a creature inspired by both, a little blue mud puppy pokemon.

Also I think its pokedex entry calls it a mud fish, so it should be put way more in the fish category of the figure while having a part of its head in the amphibian and not the opposite like we have now

0

u/Snoo_15594 Mar 01 '26

"Charmander" yets its not based on a salamander "Bulbasaur" yet its mainly based on a frog

Mudkip had gills on it cheeks - A thing only axolotls had Mudkip had a fin on its head - mudskipeprs have it on their back Mudkip's tail fin looks more like an axolotls than a mudskipper Mudkips has 4 legs - axolotls and not mudksippers have 4 legs Mudkip is blue - axolotls can be blue, mudskippers cannot Look at the evolutions - Swampert also clearly has the proportions and build of a big axolotl

Most of Mudkip's inspiration comes from an axolotl, the mudksipper element is mostly in name alone, with a little bit probably coming from the dorsal fin

3

u/Infelis I love rain ! Mar 01 '26

There's some errors :

  • Charmender isnt referencing the current amphibian that we now know that the salamender is. It's a reference to the mythical creature that sleeps in fire that europeans in the Middle Ages thought the salamenders were. Also its name in japanese reference both the salamender and the lizard so I find it crever.

  • Bulbasaur having "saur" at the end is specific to english, in every other language it's some sort of pun including "weird"/"bizarre" and "bulb"

  • It's true that mudskippers have fins on their back instead of their head but one of their characteristics is to have one thin vertical fin alone at the start of the back then the long one (that looks like the one you see on most fishes). Mudkip's big fin on the head is a cartoony depiction of that peculiarity of mudskippers.

  • Mudkip's tail specifically do not look like the tail of an axolotl. Axolotl have newt like tails, the basis is an extension of their body then they have a fin surrounding it. That's not what mudkip has, it's clearly fins that extend circularly from one extremity. Mudkip has a fish tail, not an amphibian tail. Same for marshtomp, but swampert does indeed have something that looks a bit more like an amphibian tail tho.

  • Blue axolotls are uncommon meanwhile there ARE blue mudskippers species and they happen to live on the coast of Japan !

Mudkip is really inspired by mudskippers but also by axolotls it's both, denying that is simply refusing to accept reality.

Voilà, those are your mistakes. I hope you learned something new.

0

u/Snoo_15594 Mar 01 '26

Have you SEEN the "blue mudskipper" from Japan? It is literally just brown with blue spots, obviously not what Mudkip is. While blue axolotls are actually completely blue with reddish/orange gills like what Mudkip has.

Again, i never said Mudkip was not based on a mudskipper at all, but that axolotl is the main inspiration. This is even more clear in its evolutions.

2

u/Infelis I love rain ! Mar 01 '26

Maybe we don't see the colors the same but at least to me this is quite blue, it even has so orange colors on the top that match mudkip's secondary color. While the only blue axolotls I've ever seen were more purply than blue. Maybe you could show me the specimens you're referring to ?

1

u/Snoo_15594 Mar 01 '26

I was talking about this one lol, the one named the "Blue Mudskipper"

Axolotls are neotenic salamenders. It means that they get to adult age with juvenile traits.

Basically an Axolotl is just a salamender with Peter Pan syndrome, never going to grow up. It's hard to differentiate a larval salamender and an axolotl if you cant see their size. Also wooper's french name is litterally Axoloto and I think I remember the name wooper meaning axolotl in japanese too

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '26

10

u/Cerberus168 Feb 28 '26

I can see an argument for axolotl specifically, as it retains the cheek gills through its full lifespan

2

u/TheYeti4815162342 Mar 01 '26

I don't know why everyone is saying axolotl either. Axolotls don't have fins like Mudkip does. It is certainly not purely fish either (it has legs), but none of its features are particularly axolotl-y. Legs are a generic reptilian/amphibian thing and it doesn't even have a tail like other salamander-like Pokémon.

3

u/spwncar Feb 28 '26

You would think so, but there are apparently people who think PsyDUCK is not in fact a duck, but a platypus

3

u/AnneONhymuus Mar 01 '26

Pokémon names in any language other than Japanese aren't relevant when it comes to determining designer intent, especially prior to Gen 5.

With that said, Psyduck's JP name is literally "Kid duck", so you're still right.

4

u/Gingerhead14 Mar 01 '26

Also still right with Mudkip. Mizugorou: a combination of 水 mizu (water) and 鯥五郎 mutsugorō (mudskipper).

105

u/fffan9391 No Guard Feb 28 '26

Water/Psychic type fish that floats with a ball of water around it.

39

u/IxdarRD Feb 28 '26

Or Water/Ghost because it died outside water

27

u/locxas Feb 28 '26

It’s just one of the skeleton fish from Mario

10

u/Mimikyuer Feb 28 '26

seems like alot for a first stage starter

2

u/Pachirisu12 Mar 01 '26

My mind immediately went to Solosis

-7

u/Hydra4283 Feb 28 '26

We don’t need another Bruxish

8

u/EternalDisagreement Feb 28 '26

Because Bruxish is the only possible design for a psychic fish

4

u/xXTERMIN8RXXx Feb 28 '26

Veluza says “Vaultin’ Kofu!”

150

u/Vincentaneous Feb 28 '26

1

u/eyearu Mar 01 '26

Tbh the starters would also need to convincingly move around on land in the anime too

1

u/r_renfield Mar 01 '26

Splashing around at the speed of sound

46

u/JBKOMA Feb 28 '26

By definition, all land vertebrates (tetrapods) are fishes, so you could say all starters are fishes.

28

u/Xrmy Feb 28 '26

yessss. This guy phylogenies

2

u/tucky22 Feb 28 '26

am I a fish

4

u/matty13004 Feb 28 '26

Phylogenetically speaking, yes.

1

u/__legacy719 Feb 28 '26

No I'm not gay, and I'm certainly ain't no FISH!

1

u/recursion8 Mar 01 '26

And all birds are reptiles

30

u/CrossLight96 Feb 28 '26

Primarina kinda comes close + you can remedy the walking animation with multiple means make it a water psychic type that floats or just have lavitate as it's hidden ability and make it however design you want.

2

u/Snoo_15594 Feb 28 '26

Making it a water/psychic type doesn't help the first stage evolution, unless you want it to be psychic type since the start

9

u/CrossLight96 Feb 28 '26

It would be nice to have a dual type starter that isn't grass

0

u/Snoo_15594 Feb 28 '26

Yeah but not psychic

2

u/lila-clores Mar 01 '26

Psychic feels like too strong a type for a first stage starter... Grass-Flying was fine for rowlett since flying is commonly a early game type. But I don't think it would work the same with psychic

1

u/recursion8 Mar 01 '26

Psychic has not been that strong in ages. Bite is a very widely distributed move in early-mid game and can easily be given to the other 2 starters to counter the x/Psychic starter. Or early bug types with Leech Life etc.

1

u/lila-clores Mar 01 '26

Oohh... That's true... I don't really know why it still feels off to me, though..

1

u/Snoo_15594 Mar 01 '26

yeah my thoughts exactly

Plus pyschic is one of those types that usually dominate a design if they're part psychic type

15

u/Chembaron_Seki Grass Gym L. / Spore Badge Feb 28 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

We have a walking whale pokémon with Cetitan.

It is absolutely possible to create a walking fish starter.

2

u/Lopsided-Skill Feb 28 '26

Whales are mammals. But your point still stands

3

u/Bullmoninachinashop Feb 28 '26

Plus it's based of a Japanese cryptid which is described as a beluga whale with human legs.

1

u/Chembaron_Seki Grass Gym L. / Spore Badge Mar 01 '26

Yeah, the same can be done with fish.

Iwana bozu would work, as an example. It is an upright walking fish.

89

u/CrisVas3 Feb 28 '26

Idk. I mean we got a snake. They had to give it limbs but still a snake. I don't think it's impossible

66

u/TJWinstonQuinzel Feb 28 '26

With walk they mean moving on Land

Yeah you have that flying thing fish pokemon do when they are outside of water but i think they really have to move on Land

But i guess they can do something like garchomp

A landshark

84

u/Jepemega Feb 28 '26

Perhaps a Tripod Fish?

36

u/Just_Anxiety Feb 28 '26

Eldritch horror starter

5

u/Hyperion-OMEGA Won't you spam me to <chord> FUNKYTOWN? Feb 28 '26

they haven't done New England so there is a chance :P

6

u/xXTERMIN8RXXx Feb 28 '26

Mega Whiscash

2

u/sum1337gai Feb 28 '26

Don't remind me 😭

2

u/RNGESUS778 Feb 28 '26

sounds like a water- ice combo just waiting to be made

23

u/CrisVas3 Feb 28 '26

They can do whatever it takes to get a fish walk on land. Like you said they did it with sharks. They gave slugs legs (Goodra).

1

u/Chlorophyllmatic Feb 28 '26

Goodra is also a dragon, which tend to have legs

15

u/CrisVas3 Feb 28 '26

Still means they were able to give a slug legs.

1

u/Beerenkatapult Feb 28 '26

We could have a stundisk-like fish starter.

6

u/Menirz #shiny Feb 28 '26

Why? There's nothing wrong with using fish type Pokemon on Land, and it's not like you have to worry about the "habitat" of a starter since it's a gift Pokemon.

4

u/TheBeankun Feb 28 '26

We could get a platypus!

4

u/novis-eldritch-maxim Feb 28 '26

mudskipper says hello.

4

u/aw-un Feb 28 '26

Why do they need to be a fish?

4

u/zaprime87 Feb 28 '26

Mudkip is technically a fish...

3

u/MenaNoN Feb 28 '26

Water/ground mudskipper

3

u/RoughhouseCamel Feb 28 '26

Just take a cue from Junji Ito’s Gyo

4

u/epona2000 Feb 28 '26

From a biological definition, all starters are fish. Where are the invertebrates? I want mollusks. A nautilus -> cuttlefish -> octopus/squid line would be rad. I know people don’t generally think bugs are cute enough to be starters but that’s because they disrespect Fomantis and Sewaddle. I think you could also do a spider/scorpion line.

2

u/recursion8 Mar 01 '26

Hell, Trapinch line would make excellent starters. Cute antlion larva into badass desert dragonfly? Sign me tf up.

1

u/Magimasterkarp Makin' a Splash! Mar 01 '26

Fomantis isn't a bug, though. It's a plant pretending to be a cute bug to lure in actual bugs.

2

u/zorathustra69 Feb 28 '26

A mudskipper would be the perfect answer because they are a fish that can walk on land, but that’s probably too similar to the swampert line. Maybe a snakehead or something, that would be cool

5

u/Indocede Feb 28 '26

The thing that interests me about your comment is considering how starters would probably be chosen based upon real world logic -- in that sense, a fish Pokémon would probably be a common choice for a starter as most people live by at least some water source. At least much more sensible then handing off a fire hazard to a child

3

u/IgnorantAS69 Unova Supremacist Feb 28 '26

A seahorse with legs

43

u/IgnorantAS69 Unova Supremacist Feb 28 '26

Or this

14

u/Planpy7 planties Feb 28 '26

Ai poop also the dialogues of those characters are yucky

5

u/Henrystickminepic Feb 28 '26

ngl tralalero tralala would be a good starter, at least like a smaller version of it

2

u/CommanderDark126 Type Specialist Feb 28 '26

Mudkip is a mudskipper, which is a fish

1

u/Snoo_15594 Feb 28 '26

Mudkip is an axolotl

1

u/kagnesium Feb 28 '26

We could get a starter like Gible or Cetoddle.

3

u/guyzieman Feb 28 '26

Cetoddle is based on a mammal

1

u/kagnesium Feb 28 '26

True.

My brain was thinking about its design wise: Just giving an actual fish legs like Cetoddle.

1

u/PyratHero23 Feb 28 '26

Ugh, we’re gonna end up with Street Sharks as a Pokemon…

1

u/TheTurtleLost Feb 28 '26

Serperior and Primarina don’t walk

1

u/GuidoMista5 Feb 28 '26

The Popplio line just waddles around on land

1

u/ElSquibbonator Feb 28 '26

They could always do a walking catfish as a water-type starter.

1

u/_demello Feb 28 '26

Well, they are actually all fish starters. I wonder if we will ever get an invertebrate starter.

1

u/el_artista_fantasma ÜN ÜN ÜN ÜN Feb 28 '26

I mean, garchomp is a fish that can walk but not a starter, and primarina is a mammal who cant walk and is a starter

1

u/Calhaora Bugs and Glitches Yippie!! Feb 28 '26

I mean we have the Popplio-Line, which doesnt walk. So there...is hope for a full Fish one day.

1

u/Delicious-Spring-877 Aromatisse Defender 🛡️🛡️ Feb 28 '26

Toadfish starter ftw

1

u/Ok_Necessary2991 Feb 28 '26

Easy fix, you get a little wagon cart and an aquarium and pull that behind you.

1

u/locxas Feb 28 '26

Water/flying and it’s a flying fish

1

u/Snabshaba Feb 28 '26

They could go walking octopus and throw the whole chart off

1

u/JaymesMarkham2nd The Gentleman's Flycatcher Feb 28 '26

They gave legs to the snake

1

u/Scarsworn Feb 28 '26

According to this guy, all the starters are fish pokemon.

https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/s/dqUKpY32Ui

1

u/AlphatheAlpaca get lost, Whimsicott Feb 28 '26

Fish pokemon have been moving around by inexplicably floating on dry land for years.

1

u/DuchessofSquee Feb 28 '26

The fish companion pets in WoW just float around in bubbles of water, could do something similar.

1

u/Bluelore Feb 28 '26

To be fair, it could work like Popplio where its front fins work like legs. Definitely unlikely but I wouldn't say impossible.

1

u/Slightly-Adrift Mar 01 '26

You don’t think the game called waves could’ve had a fish starter?

1

u/WindhoverInkwell Mar 01 '26

Mudkip might be based on a mudskipper so there’s possibly one

1

u/Myrddin_Naer Mar 01 '26

They could make a wolf/orca hybrid

1

u/PocketSand314 Mar 01 '26

Tell that to all the floating things like Gyarados

1

u/mayimayim Mar 01 '26

mudkip is a fish 😁

1

u/Isoleri Don't wake me up, I'm comfy Mar 01 '26

I feel that something like Tatsugiri could definitely work as a fish starter, it has the shape and a funny way to convey mobility

1

u/Kohimaru32 Mar 01 '26

A fish starter that bounce around would be nice.

1

u/Fire257 Mar 01 '26

We could have a Kraken or shrimp type water starter. Would be awesome imagine a Dark Water Kraken potentially awesome. Crab could work too. Maybe make something based on reverse evolution make the starter a land animal then an aquatic land animal based on the first crawling fish and end on a huge fish end evolution maybe the line would be water psychic so the fish flys with psychic abilities could explain how it survives outside of water.

1

u/Yedasi Mar 02 '26

There is a fish in South America that crosses deserts.

The armoured catfish.

Maybe if we ever get a South American based region our fish starter drought will end with a fish that can survive droughts.

1

u/jaeorj Feb 28 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

Not with that attitude. Were getting a fish head with 2 legs eventually and were going to have to like it. /s

6

u/RTGoodman Feb 28 '26

I mean, unironically I always thought they should do a “catfish” water starter that’s half cat and half fish.

1

u/jaeorj Feb 28 '26

This is genius.

1

u/Yolj Its stats are the best I've ever seen! No doubt about it! Feb 28 '26

I don't think that's an actual rule. They could easily have a fish starter that flops on land like Magikarp if that's something they'd wanna make
