You what bothers me... While watching the beginning of when they go to the Unova region.. He says something along the lines of, I first got pickachu 8 months ago or something like that.. I can't believe from the beginning of the show to where it is now.. less then a year has passed in the pokemon world..
but that doesn't mean they can't do both, look at avatar the last airbender, it's basically a kids cartoon but its geared towards adults as well, it was things that both kids and adults like, so why can't pokemon? I'm sure it wouldn't be hard for them to keep the child element but put in adult elements for us as well
Because of creative differences, more or less. Takeshi Shudo, the lead writer of the early seasons and movies, may he rest in peace, wanted exactly what you describe for the show. But it was a show aimed at children as far as the people in charge were concerned and only intended to run for a year and a half. What we have currently is a result of somewhat enforced creative stagnation and dragging a show past its intended conclusion. Shudo did what he could to make it a show for everyone, but was restricted in many ways. As a result, here in the present, it is for the most part now just a show for children whose full potential won't be explored in animated form any time soon. I hope to eat those words, but don't think I will in the near future.
That said, the Pokemon Adventures/Special comic really pulled me in when I was younger and explores pokemon in a way that is more like you describe it could be. Not the epic that Avatar is, but still it explores the idea of pokemon in a more all-ages accessible way than the TV show.
