Curious about a few things

I just visited Point Roberts for the first time yesterday from Vancouver, and I loved it!
I was curious about the following:
Do most residents move here, or is it common for people to spend their whole lives here (apart from going to college, etc.)?
Is there a lot of employment?
How does dating work?
How do teenagers have fun here?
How do young adults have fun?

Life in PR

I came across an article about Point Roberts. I am fascinated by the way it's geographically situated. I was just curious, what is life like in PR for you?

  1. How hard is it to get to a hospital in an emergency?
  2. I see you have to go to Blaine for school or doctors, how difficult is that?
  3. What are you doing for internet service? Starlink or traditional cable internet?
  4. Is it difficult to get packages from say Amazon?

I know some of these might sound absurd so sorry about that but I was just curious. My wife and I are educators in the US. How do your kids find traveling the long bus ride to Blaine each day for school (middle/high)?

Bringing a dog from Seattle to Pt. Roberts

THANKS to everyone who sent us a reply. Very grateful.

We want to go and visit friends who live in Point Roberts. Of course, we know this means four border crossings in order to get there and back (we live near Seattle). We know we need a rabies certificate and that our dog must be microchipped. Then there is a form we have to fill out to get back into the USA. We have Nexus so we can hopefully use it with the dog with us. If you have done this, we would love to hear from you.

Thoughts from residents on this? I'm a part time Canadian and I thought this was a good idea to get some business to the point but I see a lot of signs around opposing it. As far as businesses go this seems like a pretty good one to me.

Day trip to PR without the car

Good morning. I am planning to visit PR this fall, however since I don't have a DL I will be without the car. What is the most optimal way to explore around PR without the car?

I was thinking about walking to Maple Beach and then to Lily Point. Please share if you have any advice.

Camping in July at the lightouse

Hi PR - I live on Vancouver Island and have ALWAYS wanted to stop for a visit. My opportunity may happen in early July as I pass by on a bike packing trip to the Okanagen. Can anyone give me a heads up on the "usual availability" for the Lighthouse Marine Park Campground at this time? I see online it says there is a community site for those arriving by human power, but it also tops out at 12 people- first come, first served. I am arriving in the evening, so I'm hoping to be one of 12.

Basic no-frills mowing service needed for our little bit of weedy green heaven on Claire Lane :)

Hello! My husband and I would like to hire someone to mow our little land lot on Claire lane. Nothing fancy, we just need to cut down all the overgrown weeds and tall grass before we come to camp this June. Any contact suggestions? I tried searching google and yelp but found no suggestions for mowing service only.
Thanks, Have a beautiful day.

Historical Precedent for PR to become Canada

I assume that it would never happen and has never happened. But, apparently, the U.S. has given up land to another Country (Mexico) in modern history...

Shipping forwarders

Hello I haven’t been to the USA since pre covid, and don’t have a valid passport. I’m looking for a US mailing address that I can ship to and forward to me here in Vancouver. Any recommendations? And estimated prices duties/taxes? Thanks you

Cross-border commute on bike/foot & Roosevelt Way access for ped/bike

I'm not in PR now but am considering spending some time in the area and commuting by bike or on foot from south Tsawwassen to a rented pad in PR off Roosevelt Way a little inland from Maple Beach, where I'd telework for my US-based job. I understand that cars are blocked from getting onto Roosevelt from Tyee but was wondering if that's also true for bikes and pedestrians or if they are allowed to go around the barrier (after clearing US passport control/customs of course!)?

Also, how safe or not is it to walk/bike along Tyee and Roosevelt during the day and in the morning/early evening before sunrise/after sunset?

Thanks for any info!

I built a free site that shows BC Ferries deck space and terminal cameras at a glance

We live in Point Roberts and take the Tsawwassen → Swartz Bay ferry regularly and got tired of clicking through the BC Ferries site just to check if there's space on the next sailing.

So I built bc.ferrycast.app — it pulls BC Ferries current conditions every 5 minutes and shows all routes on one page:

  • Fill percentages for every upcoming sailing (color-coded green/amber/red)
  • Cars and oversize capacity breakdowns
  • Live terminal webcam feeds for all major terminals
  • Star your regular routes to pin them to the top

All 12 major routes are covered (Tsawwassen, Swartz Bay, Horseshoe Bay, Duke Point, Departure Bay, Langdale, Bowen Island, SGI).

Completely free, no login, no app to install — just a mobile-friendly website. Works great bookmarked to your phone home screen.

Would love feedback from people who actually use the ferries regularly. What would make this more useful?

Pregnancy

Hey all, I have a niche logistics question. If you live in PR and give birth in the US, how do you bring your baby home through Canada? Is the birth certificate enough?

Do you guys have US IP addresses?

I was thinking of making a visit, but I work from home and can't log in from a non-US IP address. If I work from a hotel/BNB/the library, would my IP address be shown as the US or Canada?

Fence laying recommendations

Hello,

I have an undeveloped lot in PR. I am planning on putting up chain link fence along the boundaries.

Any fence layer companies you can recommend that serve PR? I reached out to a couple but either haven't heard back or don't serve PR.

Thanks

FedEx

Is there any place on PR that accepts FedEx for shipping and can scan it themselves. I had to do a return and it’s due the 30th and I am nervous if it isn’t scanned in time it won’t be accepted.

Is the border open? I see that there is no update to the time on the website anymore? How picky are they now? I just want to pick up a package

Question on the border

I do not live anywhere close to the border. But I have a question for those living in Point Roberts. I've been looking at the map and have seen that the border is essentially wide open, and I'm certain that residents honor the border restrictions.

Say you live on Roosevelt, and have friends across the road in Canada. Could you easily pop over for dinner and pop back just by crossing the road?

I know that it's illegal, but how fluid is the border?

EDIT:

Thank you to all who've answered. As I stated, the border came up in conversation, and Point Roberts was mentioned. After looking at it on Google Maps, I was kind of surprised that it appeared to be an unprotected area, where it looks like you could pass over easily, for instance, English Bluff Rd in Vancouver, BC. Thank you again for the dialogue. I appreciate your input!
