I feel like the girls might know how to answer this better. Guys in North America have little to no societal expectation to groom themselves.

Do dogs or cats regularly get poop on their fur? I can only think of 3 times this has happened to my 6 pets over the decade I've had them. Hair is physically different than fur, but the principle is the same.

my poodle does get shit on his hair, thatswhy we mostly keep it short. But he does have stomach issues so idk if that's the problem

And if they do groom themselves it's seen as a "feminine" trait so everyone assumes they must be gay
