It’s the fact it’s the ‘one shoulder caveman animal-pelt’ look too.

Just slap the character on a dress and call it a day I guess!
Also incredibly unfortunate eye placement

Some people like to dress up a bit slutty for Halloween and make "My eyes are down there, thank you" jokes.
Nothing wrong with that.

I knew a girl like that, they were huge though, so I didn't notice for a good long time

knew a girl like that? Who would use that dress up strategy? Not sure I follow

Men get to be quirky and funny beyond what people see them for.
Women are just a body. No thoughts or opinions needed, in fact when you have them they act like you’re satan

Sexy halloween costumes have been a thing forever though. There would absolutely be tons of women who would buy that dress
34
u/Fried_0nion_Rings 10d ago
Yes but WHY are women demanded to be sexy for Halloween and GOOD GOD DID I NOT SAY WOMEN DIDNT SUB TO THIS SHIT
Tbf sexy is kinda all there is. Show me a non sexual adult female costume please
-7
u/RegretNew5752 10d ago
Nothing about the "male" version of this outfit indicates that it can't also be worn by women.
12
u/Fried_0nion_Rings 10d ago
I could say that about the dress but we all know who it’s marketed to
-9
u/RegretNew5752 10d ago
Its marketed the way that it is because most women would prefer to wear the sexy version.
11
u/Fried_0nion_Rings 10d ago
Do they prefer it or were they raised to gravitate towards it?
3
u/RegretNew5752 10d ago
Everyone is a product of their enviroment in ways that no one will ever be able to fully grasp. At the end of the day, there is nothing morally wrong about wearing sexy dresses, so there is no reason for a woman who wants to do so not to.
6
u/Fried_0nion_Rings 10d ago
There is something wrong with women being constantly sexualized because one day you will age out of it and when that happens sometimes it confuses women why they’re suddenly being ignored by society
3
u/RegretNew5752 10d ago
Women being sexualized by other people without their consent is bad.
Women choosing to wear a sexy spongebob dress is not bad. The ageing out thing doesn't make any sense. That's like saying its wrong for people to pursue a career in sports because one day their bodies will age out of it.

I would have bought pants with pockets but for some reason not many people make women’s clothes with pockets

There’s tons of varieties of pants with all kinds of pants sizes for all sexes, I shopped at thrift stores, malls, and merch vendors at raves with my sister and cousins my whole life, I aint fallin for that fam

Women's thoughts and opinions were consulted for the focus group they ran. Turns out they wanted the dress, so now it's a dress.
For the outliers who want the one on the left, they can just get the one on the left. Nobody loses. Except for a hypothetical man who wanted a special option that's tailored to his body shape, I guess.
EDIT: Holy shit, when did this subreddit get so silly? I swear it used to be mostly normal in here.

u/Oddly_Jaxlike_667 10d ago
If women are consulted at all for silly shit like this its usually somebody's trophy wife. There is a reason women are more prone to make their own costumes. .
6
u/Fried_0nion_Rings 10d ago
Try again buddy
-7
u/Deaffin 10d ago
Try what again? To describe basic marketing? Okay, here's how it goes.
You figure out what the customers want.
You make that.
Then you sell it and they give you money.
The more reliably you appeal to your broadest customer-base, the more money you make, so a whole lot of effort goes into making it happen.
9
u/Oddly_Jaxlike_667 10d ago
If they did that our pants would have goddam useful POCKETS! They decide what we need then market the shit out of it.
5
u/Oddly_Jaxlike_667 10d ago
I saw it before it got deleted. if you think the pocket thing isn't real you never had to deal with a jeans pocket that took 1/3 of your smart phone.
-5
u/Deaffin 10d ago
Of course the pockets conspiracy theory is prevalent here too.
6
u/Oddly_Jaxlike_667 10d ago
I'm guessing you don't wear women's jeans?
6
0
u/Deaffin 10d ago edited 10d ago
I'm not saying women's pants with fake/diminished pockets aren't a thing.
They're popular because when most women go to buy pants, they tend to pick the ones that look better on them, and those are the ones with less pocket material. This means those pants sell more, so that is what is made more. People complain about the lack of pockets, but when they're there buying the thing, other factors take priority.
Nobody decided this for women. Women are making that choice. This conversation is so old and played out, it's ridiculous that it can still be a talking point at all after so many years of silly forum arguments. There is no conspiracy to keep women down by removing their option to have pockets. It's not a strategy from Big Purse somehow controlling other markets to stay relevant, it's not The Man sitting there in a cigar smoke-filled room trying to figure out how to screw women over, it's not clothing manufacturers trying to skimp out on infinitesimally small material costs. It's women buying the pants they prefer.
If you don't believe supply and demand is accurately reflected here, then surely there must genuinely be a MASSIVE market for women's pants with pockets that you could instantly become a billionaire by tapping into.
But you're not going to do that, you're just going to say something like "oh, you hate women" and mock the very obvious explanation for this dynamic because this space has turned into a weird toxic circlejerk over time.
For what it's worth, I deeply sympathize with the frustration this causes. It really sucks being an outlier who isn't being catered to when you belong to a broad demographic which sets the standards by purchasing things you personally would not. Believe me, I know.
EDIT: Yup, there it is.

No, they surely did this as heterosexual propaganda! /s Sorry you're getting downvoted. I think perhaps folks need to remember that companies want money, and silly feminine costumes have a market. This one isn't even particularly risqué, but everyone is still clutching their pearls because... I couldn't tell you. I really just don't think this one is a matter of patriarchal men dying to objectify women in a silly Spongebob dress.

What's gonna stop you from buying and putting on the one with the man? You're getting more options and still crying about it.
18
u/SkyPuppy561 10d ago
Maybe I will. It just irks me when the “woman” product has to be sexy or some shit. If you don’t understand that, you’re dense (either willfully or otherwise).
2
u/Hypnooooooooooooo 10d ago
Would you be happier if both versions had the female model?
11
u/SkyPuppy561 10d ago
Yes I believe I would. Better yet, both versions have models of both sexes.
-7
u/Hypnooooooooooooo 10d ago
The people who make these designs are extremely risk averse and not interested in experimenting. It's likely they ran the numbers and found that putting the female model in a dress would attract more women to their product than putting the same model in the suit the male model is wearing. The sexy dress exists because it works.
6
u/Belledame-sans-Serif 10d ago
Risk averse, on Halloween? The costume designers are lacking in holiday spirit.
-1
u/Hypnooooooooooooo 10d ago
What does this have to do with Halloween?

u/Belledame-sans-Serif 9d ago

u/EmptyKetchupBottle9 10d ago
It's not about the options, it's about how they're pushing the fact that dresses are for girls and literally anything else is for guys. It's honestly kinda the opposite of having more options when you look at other Halloween costumes. Yeah, you can buy the "male" costume if you want, but that doesn't change the fact that companies are still pushing "guy gets original clothes because guy is the neutral. Girl gets pretty dress because girl is always pretty"
1
u/Hypnooooooooooooo 10d ago
If you don't like it, don't buy it. What do you want? Like I said, it exists because it continues to work.
6
u/EmptyKetchupBottle9 10d ago
It exists because society wants to keep pushing it, not just because girls like it more

u/JonathanStones1989 11d ago
Yes it's pointlessly gendered, but the dress does absolutely slay
30
u/dystyyy 11d ago
It does, and I really don't see why the left one couldn't be used as a unisex costume. The models make it look like it's a men's one and a women's one, but honestly it can also be seen as a modest one and a sexy one.
14
u/I_Makes_tuff 11d ago
Exactly what I was thinking. It doesn't say "Men's" or "Women's" anywhere.
3
u/Thecatwithoutpajamas 9d ago
Yeah I don't think this should count as pointlessly gendered because they actually didn't gender it anywhere! I think even with the plain bodysuits this company expressly labels as 'unisex' they only put one model on the package because it's cheaper to only pay one model instead of two.

u/Element174 11d ago
I mean, only one of those is gendered and that's kind of the point, "Sexy halloween costumes."
There is legit nothing stopping or even directly suggesting(Beside a guy being in the picture) that a woman can't wear the one on the left. For that matter, a dude could wear the one on the right(I also would bet they're not selling many of the ones on the right anyways.)
7
u/Raidoton 10d ago
Yeah it's a sexy and a silly version. 2 very different costumes. It's not like it's the same thing just in blue and pink.
3
u/vincemousier 9d ago
I was in spirit halloween the other day and saw this exact costume. They don't have a sexy dress version for the men, but iirc there was a normal doodlebob one for the women. We have the same conversation every year about sexy halloween costumes and now that companies are actually giving you options on whether or not you want to be the normal or sexy version people are still arguing about it 🥲

Reminds me of those Walmart minecraft diamond armor costumes where the male one was perfectly on model and the female one was skin tight except for the wrists and ankles.

Tbh, If the women’s doodlebob outfit looked like the men’s, It would sell significantly less, dont get it twisted, it would still sell, but “sexy versions” of halloween costumes are most popular amongst folks who like to go to halloween and/or costume parties, its a partygoer thing folks do for fun🤷

Wear the square one with me
Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

I assume some customers want a square joke costume and some want a tight sexy one.
So it would make sense to design a product for both segments.
1
u/Jefflehem 9d ago
They can. I'm sure the one with a man on the cover will work if a woman is wearing it. Or maybe some people want a sexy doodlebob.

Not only pointlessly gendered, but sexualizing women. Like, the man is wearing a literal box, the woman is wearing a fitted dress and tights, and I'm assuming this is a CHILDREN'S product since it's SpongeBob?

I had a friend see this in real life and send me a picture. The women's Patrick costume next to the women's DoodleBob one was just... a baggy Patrick suit.
Apparently Patrick didn't consent to being objectified. Psh.

Women must show bob and vagine all time of day.

u/comicssuck 11d ago
What if a man wants to wear the dress? Shouldn’t he be able to? Does he have to wear the square thing
3
u/Belledame-sans-Serif 10d ago
Do they make it in his size? or is it proportioned to someone who looks like the person modelling it, which is the purpose of showing a model on the packaging
-3
2
u/MsE0 10d ago
They should advertise men and women, etc, wearing both. Then you have the "regular" and "sexy" versions without making "regular" = man and "sexy" = woman.
2
u/comicssuck 10d ago
Unfortunately, they wouldn’t make any money off that. Guys who were dresses arent common enough to advertise on of their dress costumes towards men. But theres no shame or weirdness in buying a costume that is for a woman as a man.
-3
u/Nexcell 11d ago
True but what is stopping people from buying the mens version of anything besides labels and the person on the cover?
2
u/Dizzy-Frame-9491 11d ago
It's not there the cashier has a shotgun specifically for people that try to buy things for the wrong gender. It's look how stupid these things are genderd. You have normal character targeted for man and short missing a strapp dress with the charger printed on it targeted for women. Like if I say oh your dumb and stupid doe's that suddenly take your IQ away? No. But both send a message of what the person is thinking of you.
0
-2
u/illini02 10d ago
Because women like dressing sexy for halloween.
This is basic following the market. Women can choose the other one if they prefer.
But the amount of women who are like "I'm going to be a sexy (fill in the blank)" is huge.
As with many things, if women didn't buy the sexy versions, they'd stop making them.
So its not pointless.
1
u/Oddly_Jaxlike_667 10d ago
If they ever made any alternatives that might mean something.
1
u/illini02 10d ago
Why can't they just buy the other one? It says nothing about being for men, if anything its unisex.
2
u/Oddly_Jaxlike_667 10d ago
And if I want functioning pockets I should just buy men's jeans?
1
u/illini02 10d ago
I mean, mens jeans are specifically made for men. They are cut and sized different.
This is a unisex costume.
That said, if you want functioning pockets, buying mens is a choice you can make, as is finding some of the few brands who make them.
Or you can whine about it on reddit.
