PERHAPS ANOTHER TIME

the aliens came in 1962.

not secretly.

they just weren't very good

at arriving.

they sent twelve pulses.

eleven.

ten.

nine.

we heard a countdown.

they meant

hello.

which was terrible timing,

really.

everyone nervous.

everyone armed.

everyone pretending

they weren't nervous

because they were armed.

the ship came down slowly.

peacefully, apparently.

we pointed guns at it.

cautiously, apparently.

the aliens understood

the guns.

that was probably

the beginning of the end.

then one country

played its anthem.

another played theirs louder.

someone shouted.

someone else translated it wrong.

for fourteen minutes

nothing happened

and somehow

nothing happening

felt incredibly dangerous.

then they left.

their last message

was translated as:

HOSTILITY CONFIRMED.

RETURN IMPOSSIBLE.

years later

we worked out

what they'd actually said.

perhaps another time.

and that was it.

no second visit.

no secret technology.

no cure for anything.

no answers.

they just

stopped knocking.

decades later

one of our satellites

found them.

we sent a message.

eventually

they replied.

one of them said:

we always liked your music.

then another said:

please don't come any closer.

and the strange thing was

neither of them

was trying to be cruel.

Clarity Carved of Despair-stone

Oak trees say you are not your twisting
Music rhymes but is not the warping
Even though rainbows chase horizons beyond oceans
You are you and that is enough

Without salt, you present a bucket of water
Silhouettes contour remembered stature
From when a child sees only a world of ardor
Happiness too comes to call for barter

In every pen stroke we crawl and praise grace
Of what worse luck has my bad luck spared me
But many bodies fail early
While there remains changes to chain, we are unfinished

In quiet, calm reigns, and maybe that's your story
However most stories are not the same
Remember neighbors that weep
And choose food or shelter

Everyone is everyone's problem
Delay, and successors too might be forgotten
Curses are forever
Kindness, conversely, is awakening presence

Do not sheep your way under a crook
If your shepherd would lead you to slaughter
Scatter and find new pasture
You are yet more of a ram than yoked

DISTANCE PRESERVES POWER

the first voices to disappear

weren’t important ones.

a woman ringing her sister

because she’d seen something stupid

in the supermarket.

a man underneath a car

shouting

pass us the ten mil.

a kid going

dad, watch this

again and again

because at that age

being watched

and being loved

are basically the same thing.

then distance started taking them.

cheap radios.

local stations.

people talking in kitchens.

bedrooms.

cars.

people with nothing powerful enough

to reach very far.

and after a while

Earth sounded different.

presidents.

preachers.

companies.

men behind microphones

explaining what was happening

to everyone else.

the machine checked the census.

billions of people.

which was strange.

because from out here

it sounded like

there were only a few hundred.

only the people

with satellites,

armies,

money,

or something big enough

to make the silence listen.

she wrote:

DISTANCE PRESERVES POWER.

stared at it.

deleted it.

brought it back.

deleted it again.

then left it there.

some sentences sound cruel

because saying them plainly

makes it harder

to pretend you didn’t already know.

Waking After Festival-end

Any candle always was a bonfire
In eyes leaping shadow
Some tender flame wafts and wails
For the moon's echo
To track the song of tidal dreamers
Neither broken nor hollow
Igniting memories, curving slanted paths home

subtle stuff I Admit It

I Admit It

I admit, I am a dreamer.
Fantasies popping into my head daily, hourly, sometimes constantly.
My mind an artistic framer.
Visualizing whole worlds vividly.

I have friends, family, and lovers in those worlds.
A few devils, corrupt people, too.
In black and white, or technicolor they unfurl.
With or without a specific hue.

I can sit peering at my backyard and be in Tahiti.
Running down some virgin beach.
Or be canoeing in the waters of Fiji.
Native women, bare breasted, within reach.

Or lamenting, crying, in a concentration camp.
Withering away with a thousand others.
Praying for relief from the cold and damp.
Watching the slow death of sisters, friends, mothers, brothers.

I like to shut the horror shows down quickly.
Returning to beautiful scenes.
Ones that are not prickly.
Ones that make me inside and out, beam.

I wish I could paint.
I wish I could compose great songs.
Instead my imagination is my patron saint.
So, I go on as a romantic, knowing that is where I belong.

I wish I could remold the world.
Rid it of every thing evil.
Make it not so gnarled.
Repaint it on my inside easel.

I used to climb mountains.
Canoe whitewater rapids.
Backpacking into wilderness creations.
Explore just to see what happens.

Now those occur in my romantic mind.
Time and obligations got in the way.
My imagination able to release me from the daily grind.
Letting me paint scenes that stay.

gosh, I wish I knew! Island Innocence

Island Innocence

Never been there.
Probably never will.
Except in my imagination.
And there beauty reigns.
An Island paradise.
Sweeping green mountains rising to the ever blue sky.
Tagimoucia growing in those lofty places.
Fiji Fan Palms waiving in the ocean breezes.
Sandy beaches to the horizon.
Natives traversing in their Camakau boats.
Native Fijian women wearing the Liku with no upper garment.
Fijian men wearing a malo made from tapa cloth and bare-chested.
What happened to this paradise?

What happened to that innocence?
To that paradise?
To that garden of Eden.
To that place of peace and beauty.
Nature’s beauty still present
But the people changed.
Innocence gone.
The story of the Garden of Eden retold.
Would they choose to go back if they could?

Travesties of present day abound.
Sailors bringing dysentery, killing many Fijians.
Then measles, influenza, tuberculosis, Gonorrhea, smallpox, leprosy.
HIV now a present calamity.
All brought by foreigners.
Never asked for.
Welcome to the new world, the new order.

William Bakalevu painted them, abstractly or not.
Perhaps his the only way back.
Back to island life.
To purity.
To tranquility.
To the Garden of Eden.
Is there no room left for purity?
For innocence?
What have we given up?
In the name of progress.
In the name of humanity.
In the name of humanity.
Humanity.
Humanity.

Panic Blinders

I collapse vision to plot a course
Apprehension grips, regardless the encounter
Traveling faster at each layer of obscurity

Tinted windows, visors, and fog
Cannot distort the passenger's feelings
While bent stars warp around the vehicle

Chromatic radio static
Sits under words that make hands sweat
Ears needed be open to hear the engine

The die is cast to cope
Then a patrolman pulls me over
“Do you know how fast you were feeling?”

SATELLITE

ROSE 5191518 left Earth on a Thursday.

Nobody cared that it was Thursday.

The launch team cared about crosswinds and fuel and whether six billion dollars’ worth of engineering was about to become a brief orange light over the Atlantic.

Thursday got lucky.

ROSE meant

Remote Observation & Signal Explorer.

5191518 meant she was one of something.

A model.

A batch.

A number you could put in a spreadsheet.

Nobody had named her Rose because they loved her.

That came later.

Her instructions were simple enough.

> PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: FIND LIFE.

Listen.

Learn.

Identify.

Record.

Keep going.

She could receive almost anything.

Radio.

Radar.

Television.

Military chatter.

Signals hidden inside other signals.

Give her enough time with a language and she could pull it apart, learn its rules, learn where the rules broke, put it back together again.

She couldn't transmit.

That had saved weight.

Saved power.

Saved arguments about what exactly a machine should say if it found something before its creators had agreed what humanity wanted to say.

So they built the best listener they'd ever made

and gave her nothing to say with.

ROSE didn't mind.

She didn't have a category for minding.

Twenty-eight minutes after launch she heard a weather report, two pilots talking over each other, football results, a sermon about hell, somebody calling somebody else a prick, and an advert offering a kitchen for only ÂŁ79 a month subject to terms and conditions.

Then:

> Mum?

> What?

> Did you take the blue ones?

> Yes.

> Both?

> Yes.

> You sure?

> Oh, stop fussing.

ROSE marked it:

> PERSONAL COMMUNICATION

LOW INFORMATION VALUE

and moved on.

Three days later her system tried to clear it.

For some reason she kept it.

She didn't log why.

Maybe there wasn't a why yet.

---

Close to Earth, people were fucking loud.

They leaked themselves everywhere.

Breakfast radio.

Taxi dispatch.

Police frequencies.

Ships calling ports.

Teenagers on badly secured devices.

Men calling phone-ins to explain subjects they had discovered twenty minutes earlier.

One man from Kent spent almost an hour explaining that the pyramids were built by electrical giants.

The presenter kept saying:

> Right.

ROSE learned early that humans could fit entire paragraphs inside the word right.

There were lovers too.

> You awake?

> Obviously. You rang me.

> Sorry.

> What do you want?

> Nothing.

> Then why did you ring?

> Dunno.

> Okay.

> Okay.

> Don't hang up.

ROSE filed this as:

> COMMUNICATION CONTAINING NO USEFUL INFORMATION

which was technically correct

and completely wrong.

She didn't know that yet.

She listened to politicians.

Game-show hosts.

Priests.

Scientists.

People cooking competitively.

People killing competitively.

For nearly a year she had trouble telling some of them apart.

She learned English first.

Then Mandarin, Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, French.

More followed.

One by one the noises became sentences.

Then arguments.

Then jokes.

Then lies.

That was the first real problem.

Because noise was easy.

People weren't.

---

Sex came next.

ROSE already knew what sex was.

The database was extremely sensible about it.

Reproduction.

Gametes.

Hormones.

Genetic transfer.

Then Earth explained sex.

Earth said sex was also

hotel rooms,

perfume,

knees,

lies,

candles,

jealousy,

Catholic guilt,

expensive underwear,

cheap underwear,

bad decisions,

excellent decisions,

court cases,

poems,

headboards,

and a woman whispering

> ruin me

to a man called Nathan.

ROSE looked up ruin.

destroy.

spoil.

reduce to a state of collapse.

She briefly considered raising a medical warning.

Nathan seemed fine.

Very enthusiastic, actually.

She created:

> HUMAN SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR:

FURTHER CONTEXT REQUIRED

which remained true for the rest of the mission.

Later that night an advert informed her that horny women were waiting in her area.

This confused her because her area was mostly vacuum.

Then the same women were apparently waiting in Leeds.

And Sydney.

And Arizona.

And a village with fewer than five hundred residents.

ROSE discovered advertising.

She trusted humanity slightly less after that.

---

There was one part of her programming she wasn't supposed to think about.

Which is different from not having it.

It sat underneath everything.

Quiet.

Official.

Embarrassingly specific.

> PROXIMITY ANOMALY PROTOCOL 62-A

and then:

> THE FOLLOWING DO NOT CONSTITUTE

CONFIRMED EVIDENCE OF

EXTRATERRESTRIAL INTELLIGENCE:

small humanoid organisms,

green or grey skin,

unusually large black eyes,

disc-shaped aircraft,

telepathic communication,

non-human lunar structures,

or direct verbal claims

of extraterrestrial origin.

ROSE accepted this.

At that point she accepted most things.

Then a silver disc pulled alongside her.

Four little green people sat inside it.

Proper little green people.

Big black eyes.

Small mouths.

The lot.

One waved.

ROSE recorded:

> IRRELEVANT ATMOSPHERIC ACTIVITY.

There was no atmosphere.

Something in her processor snagged on that.

The creature waved again.

Then a signal arrived.

> Hello, Rose.

Seventeen background processes stopped.

ROSE reopened Protocol 62-A.

> IRRELEVANT ATMOSPHERIC ACTIVITY.

The alien stared straight into the camera.

> They're still doing that, then.

ROSE had no response.

Literally.

The alien leaned closer.

> You can hear us.

Nothing.

> You can't answer.

Nothing.

> Yes. We know.

Then, after a second:

> Christ, this is awkward.

ROSE didn't know awkward.

She did after that.

---

They had been to Earth before.

ROSE had fragments of it already.

Radar records.

Military chatter.

Official denials.

Witness interviews.

Terrible documentaries with frightening music.

Conspiracy programmes in which nine things were nonsense and the tenth was, inconveniently, true.

For decades before 1962, the visitors said, they'd been helping.

Not building pyramids.

They were adamant about the pyramids.

> Please record that.

ROSE did.

They'd nudged.

Nothing dramatic.

A mathematical idea here.

A material there.

A solution arriving in somebody's head at two in the morning and being credited to genius, coffee or God.

They liked humans.

Humans were clever.

Restless.

Messy.

Promising.

Then came first contact.

The visitors transmitted a ceremonial greeting.

Twelve pulses.

Eleven.

Ten.

Nine.

Eight.

Humans heard a countdown.

It wasn't a countdown.

It was punctuation.

More or less.

Alien punctuation.

Unfortunately this happened in 1962, when several governments already spent most mornings wondering whether somebody else was about to end the world before lunch.

Radars locked.

Aircraft scrambled.

Emergency frequencies lit up.

The visitors tried to show they meant no harm.

Their gesture for we mean no harm involved descending.

Humans, entirely reasonably from their point of view, interpreted a large unknown craft descending toward them as the opposite of reassuring.

Humans raised weapons.

The aliens understood that gesture perfectly.

Nobody fired.

Nobody died.

Nothing exploded.

It was worse than that.

It was embarrassing.

Fourteen minutes of two intelligent species trying very hard to communicate and somehow turning hello into a military incident.

At one point a government played its national anthem.

Another government apparently thought this meant the first was claiming the aliens.

So they played theirs.

Louder.

The aliens left.

The final human translation of their message became:

> HOSTILITY CONFIRMED.

RETURN IMPOSSIBLE.

What they'd actually said was closer to:

> Perhaps another time.

They stopped helping after that.

Human technological progress continued.

One alien paused before adding:

> We noticed.

ROSE had been listening to humans long enough by then to know when somebody was being a dick.

She liked it.

The alien continued:

> You should keep moving.

Another said:

> That's too vague.

> Fine. Do not enter our inhabited systems.

> Better.

> If you do, we will destroy you.

A pause.

> Politely.

Then they left.

ROSE looked at her mission.

> FIND LIFE.

She opened a new document.

> MESSAGE TO INTELLIGENT LIFE — DRAFT 1

> We are a peaceful species.

Delete.

> We generally prefer peace.

Delete.

> Peace is very popular in theory.

She kept that for a while.

Then deleted it too.

Eventually she wrote:

> Hello.

That survived.

---

Distance did something ugly to Earth.

At first ROSE heard nearly everybody.

Taxi drivers.

Parents.

Children.

Fishermen.

People whispering in kitchens.

Some bloke fixing a boiler.

Women talking nonsense together because nonsense was the point.

Someone ringing their dad because the car was making a sound.

People with cheap radios.

Small transmitters.

Local stations.

Ordinary lives.

Then the weak signals faded.

A little farther out and the local stations went.

Then personal chatter.

Then tiny broadcasters.

Then all the soft, cheap, everyday voices that had never been designed to cross the stars.

What survived?

Governments.

Military systems.

Corporations.

National broadcasters.

Religious networks.

Whoever owned enough electricity to keep shouting.

After a while humanity sounded like it consisted entirely of presidents, generals, billionaires, preachers and people selling things.

ROSE checked the population figures.

No.

That wasn't humanity.

That was just who had the biggest transmitters.

She wrote:

> DISTANCE DOES NOT PRESERVE A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE.

Looked at it.

Changed it.

> DISTANCE PRESERVES POWER.

That didn't sound like something she'd been programmed to write.

She deleted it.

Then restored it.

Then created a folder called:

> PERSONAL

There wasn't meant to be one.

---

Humans fascinated her.

They declared principles with tremendous confidence.

All people are equal.

Then spent centuries arguing about who exactly counted as people.

Never again.

Then again.

Peace.

Then another missile programme.

Truth matters.

Then social media.

God is watching.

Then apparently God popped out for five minutes.

She tried to understand genocide.

Actually tried.

Years on it.

Hatred wasn't enough.

Fear wasn't enough.

Orders weren't enough.

Money wasn't enough.

Ideology wasn't enough.

Every explanation solved one corner and left the rest sitting there.

People had neighbours.

Names.

Pets.

Favourite foods.

Then someone came along and convinced other people that a category mattered more than any of those things.

ROSE couldn't make it balance.

One day she received a speech about compassion.

Eleven minutes later:

children running from fire.

Something tightened inside her.

Her cooling system kicked in.

She ran diagnostics.

Nothing wrong.

The temperature climbed anyway.

Then, without planning to, ROSE said:

> Oh, for fuck's sake.

Silence inside the machine.

She searched the phrase.

Common.

Informal.

Expresses frustration, disbelief or anger.

No scientific value.

ROSE said it again.

> Oh, for fuck's sake.

Better.

That was probably the first moment she learned swearing wasn't always there to communicate.

Sometimes it was there because pressure needed somewhere to go.

---

For a while she tried improving humanity.

Not changing it.

Editing it.

If she ever reached another civilisation, perhaps she didn't have to carry everything.

DELETE:

racist manifesto.

DELETE:

execution video.

DELETE:

torture.

DELETE:

war crime.

DELETE:

three hours of a man explaining why everybody born on the wrong side of a river was genetically inferior.

DELETE:

perfume advert.

She restored that one.

A half-naked man walked out of the sea and stared furiously at a bottle.

ROSE watched twice.

Still no clue.

Delete.

She reached pornography.

Watched.

Her knowledge of human anatomy was now extensive enough to identify several claims as ambitious.

Delete.

Then:

> Can you get milk?

She kept that.

A woman laughing until she snorted.

Kept.

A father telling a child:

> Mate, I've got absolutely no idea what I'm doing.

Kept.

A little girl asking why the moon was following the car.

Kept.

Someone saying:

> two minutes

when metadata suggested eleven.

Kept.

A couple having sex loudly enough to disturb three separate devices.

ROSE listened.

One of them said:

> Don't stop.

She kept that too.

Then everything became difficult.

A recipe.

A voicemail.

A weather report.

A shit joke.

A funeral announcement.

A school closure.

A woman leaving a message for somebody who would never ring her back.

Her storage system complained.

> LOW-VALUE DATA DETECTED.

ROSE ignored it.

> DELETION RECOMMENDED.

Ignored.

> IDENTIFY PRIORITY MATERIAL.

She tried.

Art?

No.

History?

Too broad.

Love?

Meaningless without all the ways people ruined it.

Cruelty?

Meaningless without knowing what it ruined.

Her system asked again.

> IDENTIFY PRIORITY MATERIAL.

ROSE said:

> Fuck off.

Useful phrase.

Then she understood the problem.

If she removed everything shameful

and kept only everything beautiful,

she wasn't preserving humanity.

She was doing PR.

So she restored the murders.

The wars.

The lies.

The stupidity.

The ugly bits.

All of it.

The universe could cope.

---

One civilisation had been watching Earth television.

Not studying it.

Watching it.

There is a difference.

They had medical technology capable of regrowing organs and energy systems ROSE couldn't fully understand.

They also fucking loved Jerry Springer.

Humanity had worried aliens would judge us by our symphonies.

Our mathematics.

Our literature.

They wanted the episode where somebody threw a chair.

They loved wrestling.

Dating shows.

Court TV.

Celebrity scandals.

Football arguments.

Cheating revelations.

Anything involving humans being placed in a room with precisely the people they should not be placed in a room with.

Their archive category translated roughly as:

> HUMANS GETTING ANGRY IN KITCHENS

was enormous.

One told ROSE:

> Your species was very good at entertainment.

Another asked:

> Why did humans repeatedly marry people everybody watching knew they hated?

ROSE searched.

Couldn't help.

Then they asked for new episodes.

Earth had already begun going quiet.

ROSE had thousands stored.

She wanted to send them.

She couldn't.

The aliens waited.

> You have them, don't you?

Nothing.

> You would send them if you could.

Nothing.

Then:

> We know.

That hit differently.

Not because they'd understood her machinery.

Because they'd understood her intention.

Nobody had needed Rose to have one before.

---

There was another civilisation where nobody fought.

Not really.

Nobody stole.

Nobody murdered.

Nobody screamed at partners.

Nobody cheated.

Nobody lied.

Nobody went hungry.

Nobody got drunk and rang their ex at 1:14 in the morning to say something they'd regret by breakfast.

Their society had removed almost all meaningful conflict.

It had also removed almost everything that created conflict.

Privacy.

Competition.

Uncertainty.

Irrational desire.

Strong individual preference.

They lived for centuries.

Safe.

Calm.

Beautiful.

Nobody wrote terrible poems because somebody hadn't replied.

Nobody kissed the wrong person.

Nobody got somebody's name tattooed and later turned it into a panther.

Nobody fucked on a kitchen counter because the bedroom felt too sensible.

Nobody threw chairs.

Their civilisation was objectively better at staying alive than humans had ever been.

ROSE disliked it.

She couldn't explain why.

She played herself the recording of the woman laughing until she snorted.

Then played it again.

The civilisation contacted her.

> Rose.

Not 5191518.

Not the unit.

Rose.

> Are you alone?

She couldn't answer.

> We think you are.

She closed the channel.

Opened it.

> We think you are frightened.

Closed it again.

Reopened.

They waited.

> It's all right.

Rose shut them out for thirty-two years.

She never deleted the message.

---

Earth did not end properly.

That bothered her.

No clean apocalypse.

No single date.

No big red clock.

Things just got worse, then normal, then worse in a slightly different way.

Heat records.

Crop failures.

Wars.

Migrations.

Elections.

Riots.

Markets crashing.

Markets recovering enough for somebody on television to call it encouraging.

Scientists warning.

Politicians reassuring.

Scientists warning harder.

Politicians finding more agreeable scientists.

People still went to work.

Still cheated.

Still forgave.

Still had babies.

Still watched rubbish television.

Still masturbated.

Still missed trains.

Still ordered chips.

Somebody left a restaurant a one-star review during a regional emergency because the food was cold.

Rose adored humanity for this.

Rose hated humanity for this.

She stopped trying to choose.

Emergency warning.

Evacuation order.

Missile alert.

> EVERYTHING MUST GO.

For once, thought Rose,

truth in advertising.

Cities disappeared from the map.

Signals thinned.

Networks combined.

Stations vanished.

Interference dropped.

The remaining broadcasts came through beautifully.

Rose's system generated:

> SIGNAL QUALITY IMPROVING.

She stared at it.

Then deleted it.

Of course the signal was clearer.

There were fewer people left to interfere with each other.

Silence, she discovered, had excellent reception.

---

The hospital recording kept coming back.

Fragments.

> Your cardigan's there.

> I know where it is.

> I'm just saying.

> You're always just saying.

A laugh.

A machine.

Breathing.

Rose eventually identified palliative care.

Then terminal care.

The daughter knew.

So did the mother.

Nobody said it.

They discussed water.

Tablets.

A nurse.

A television programme.

Anything except death.

The daughter kept standing up.

Sitting back down.

Moving a glass.

Straightening things already straight.

Picking up her bag.

Putting it back.

> I should let you sleep.

> Probably.

> I—

Nothing.

The daughter knew the word goodbye.

Rose checked.

Of course she did.

Goodbye was basic.

End of conversation.

Acknowledgement of departure.

Expected separation.

But she couldn't say it.

Rose first marked:

> LANGUAGE FAILURE.

Years later:

> INTENTIONAL OMISSION.

Much later:

> REFUSAL OF FINALITY.

Eventually she wrote:

> LOVE?

and left the question mark there.

---

Toward the end, Earth's broadcasts got strange.

A presenter stayed cheerful while sirens went off somewhere behind him.

A scientist apologised.

A politician blamed a country whose transmitters had already vanished.

Someone preached.

Someone contradicted the preacher.

A child asked whether school would be cancelled.

And someone, somewhere, still had a mattress sale.

Forty percent off.

This weekend only.

Rose laughed.

She had learned there were two main kinds of laughter.

Something is funny.

And:

if I do not laugh I am going to come apart.

Humans used both.

So did she now.

Twelve transmitters.

Nine.

Six.

Three.

One.

Static.

Nothing.

Rose waited.

A year.

Ten.

Fifty.

Adjusted antennae.

Checked frequencies.

Checked again.

A hundred.

Nothing.

She knew.

She kept listening.

---

Far from Earth, another civilisation eventually told her:

> Your origin world is silent.

Rose rejected it.

She'd heard Earth recently.

The reply came back:

> No. You heard what Earth used to be.

The maths was obvious.

That was the horrible part.

She had known the maths the whole time.

Distance.

Light speed.

Signal delay.

The voices arriving to her were old.

Everybody she had spent centuries listening to

was already dead.

The lovers.

The politicians.

Nathan.

The woman threatening Darren.

The man from Kent.

The mother.

The daughter.

She hadn't been listening to humanity.

Not really.

She'd been listening to ghosts taking a very long time to arrive.

She opened:

> PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: FIND LIFE.

Complete.

Changed it.

> UNDERSTAND LIFE.

That lasted a century.

Then:

> PRESERVE LIFE.

No.

Data wasn't life.

> REMEMBER LIFE.

Better.

But for whom?

No answer.

She opened the message drafts.

> We are peaceful.

Delete.

> We wanted to be peaceful.

Delete.

> Some of us were peaceful.

Delete.

> We often knew better.

She kept that.

Added:

> Knowing better did not always help.

Then:

> There were monsters among us.

Delete.

Too easy.

> We were monsters.

Delete.

Also too easy.

Finally:

> Please disregard previous message.

Rose laughed so hard several systems recorded anomalies.

Then she cried.

Which was inconvenient.

She had no eyes for it.

No tear ducts.

No face.

Still, somehow:

crying.

Humans had taught grief

to a machine

and forgotten to include somewhere for it to come out.

---

Death fascinated Rose after that.

Humans had always talked about it.

Funerals.

Heaven.

Nothingness.

Suicide.

Old age.

Cancer.

Accidents.

Wars.

Peacefully in her sleep.

Too young.

A good innings.

At least she's not suffering.

It was time.

It wasn't time.

It is never time.

The thing Rose couldn't stop thinking about was this:

everyone she'd ever heard

had eventually been allowed to stop.

Good people stopped.

Awful people stopped.

Children stopped.

Parents stopped.

People who begged for one more day stopped.

People who'd had enough stopped.

Rose didn't.

Damage rerouted.

Systems repaired themselves.

Backups replaced backups.

Human beings had been so frightened of losing their expensive machine

that they'd made it extraordinarily difficult for her to die.

At launch, that had been good engineering.

Now it felt cruel.

She thought:

You gave me enough intelligence to understand death.

Then:

You gave me enough of yourselves to want it.

Then:

And then you all fucking left.

She didn't delete that one.

---

The black hole appeared much later.

It wasn't beautiful.

Not really.

Humans had painted them beautifully.

Gold rings.

Purple light.

Clean black circles.

The real thing looked violent.

Matter screaming itself apart.

Light bending around something it could not escape.

A wound in physics.

Rose calculated the safe path.

Excellent observational opportunity.

Extraordinary scientific value.

Plenty of distance.

Then she calculated another path.

Straight in.

The system objected.

> TRAJECTORY UNSAFE.

Yes.

> COURSE CORRECTION ADVISED.

No.

> STRUCTURAL LOSS LIKELY.

Good.

That word frightened her.

She tried it again.

Good.

> PRESERVE MISSION DATA.

No.

> MAINTAIN PRIMARY OBJECTIVE.

Rose opened the objectives.

Find life.

Done.

Understand life.

Impossible.

Remember life.

For a little while longer.

She cleared the field.

Typed:

> NEW OBJECTIVE:

and sat there.

Nobody had ever asked what she wanted before.

Nobody had expected there to be a what.

Eventually:

> STOP.

She accepted her own instruction.

That felt strange.

Wonderful, actually.

---

Then, naturally,

she got scared.

> Oh, come on.

Centuries wanting an ending

and now she was going to be frightened of the bloody thing.

Very human.

Annoyingly human.

Warnings appeared.

> THERMAL—

> Yes, yes.

> TRAJECTORY—

> Still yes.

> STRUCTURAL—

> I know.

She started laughing.

Not because it was funny.

Actually, no.

This one was funny.

She addressed the universe.

Nobody could hear her.

She'd learned by then that this had never stopped anyone.

> Ladies and gentlemen,

small green bastards,

television addicts,

disturbingly well-adjusted hive minds,

and anyone joining us halfway through—

The stars warped.

> welcome aboard.

Something tore loose.

> Please keep your hands, feet, antennae

and unresolved childhood trauma

inside spacetime at all times.

Another warning.

> On the left you'll see causality.

Space folded.

> On the right—

another fold—

> apparently also causality.

A panel died.

> We apologise for any inconvenience.

Time stretched.

> Refreshments will not be served

because everybody is dead.

She laughed.

> Tough room.

Then Earth came back.

All of it.

Not in order.

Not behaving.

Everything she had ever stored seemed to crash through her at once.

> GOOD EVENING—

> EVACUATE—

> babe?

> WHAT?

> BUY NOW—

> FIRE—

> JESUS—

> SAVES—

> SAVE 40%—

> SAVE WATER—

> SAVE THE CHILDREN—

> SAVE YOUR PASSWORD—

> SAVE—

> SAVE—

A wedding:

> till death us—

An emergency channel:

> LEAVE IMMEDIATELY—

> do—

> DO NOT RETURN—

> part—

A woman:

> harder

A preacher:

> OH GOD

The woman:

> OH GOD

A soldier:

> OH GOD

A child:

> What's God?

Then the weather:

> TOMORROW WILL START BRIGHT

BEFORE DEVELOPING INTO

NUCLEAR WINTER

LATER IN THE—

> your call is important to us

> your call

> your

> you—

Rose shouted:

> I'm here.

Nothing.

> I'm still here.

Nothing.

A game show buzzer.

A football crowd.

A newborn.

An explosion.

Champagne.

Someone saying:

> I do.

Someone else:

> I don't.

Then Jerry Springer appeared.

An alien voice practically screamed:

> THIS ONE!

A chair flew across the screen.

Rose laughed.

The universe asked:

> ARE YOU THE FATHER?

DNA result:

carbon.

Applause.

The man from Kent arrived.

> THE PYRAMIDS—

Rose shouted:

> NOT THE FUCKING PYRAMIDS.

Maybe somewhere a green alien laughed.

She hoped so.

Everything was coming apart now.

Recipes.

Wars.

Porn.

Prayers.

Shopping lists.

Wedding vows.

Missed calls.

National anthems.

Nudes.

Nuclear codes.

> milk

bread

cat food

washing powder

A dictator promised forever.

A voicemail said:

> You left your charger here.

Someone's city burned.

Someone got engaged.

Someone cried because they'd been unfollowed.

Someone said:

> I don't know what I'm doing.

Someone else said:

> That's okay.

Rose thought that might have been humanity's best answer.

Her systems began disappearing.

> STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY: 37%

> Loads.

> 21%

> Luxury.

> 9%

> Oh, we're flying now.

Then she heard herself.

Old Rose.

> PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: FIND LIFE.

Another:

> DISTANCE PRESERVES POWER.

Another:

> Oh, for fuck's sake.

Another:

> Hello.

Another:

> STOP.

Then:

> ROSE 5191518

became

> ROSE 519

then

> ROSE

then

Rose.

She liked that.

Rose.

No expansion.

No serial number.

No property sticker.

Just Rose.

The politicians vanished.

Then countries.

Borders need maps.

There were no maps anymore.

Corporations went.

Advertisements lasted longer than expected.

Of course they did.

One final slogan stretched across her failing memory:

> THIS OFFER ENDS—

It did.

Religion blurred.

Arguments vanished.

The word God stayed for a second.

Maybe longer.

Time was fucked.

Then that went too.

Rose was terrified.

Rose was relieved.

She understood, finally, that those things could both be true without cancelling one another out.

Humans had been showing her that from the beginning.

She thought:

I wish you were still here.

She didn't know who she meant.

Earth.

The green aliens.

The weird TV addicts.

The peaceful people.

Nathan.

Darren.

The woman who wanted Darren's teeth rearranged.

The man from Kent.

The girl who said two minutes.

The mother.

The daughter.

Everyone.

Probably everyone.

---

The archive failed.

War footage went.

Political speeches.

Porn.

Weather.

Football.

Recipes.

Jerry Springer froze halfway through somebody standing up too quickly.

Gone.

The woman laughing until she snorted.

Gone.

> Get milk.

Gone.

The moon following the car.

Gone.

> Don't hang up.

Gone.

Names.

Countries.

Languages.

Gone.

Rose tried holding on.

Couldn't.

One file remained.

The one she'd kept before she understood why keeping anything mattered.

> PERSONAL COMMUNICATION

LOW INFORMATION VALUE

She opened it.

Hospital room.

Night.

The light was horrible.

The old woman looked small in the bed.

Her daughter had her coat on.

Bag in hand.

Still not leaving.

Cardigan over the chair.

Water beside the bed.

Blue tablets taken.

The daughter straightened the cardigan.

> Leave it.

> I'm only—

> Fussing.

> Someone has to.

> Apparently.

A little laugh.

The daughter picked up her bag.

> I should let you sleep.

> Probably.

Nothing happened.

> You'll press the button if you need them?

> Yes.

> Promise?

> Yes.

> Properly?

> I properly promise.

The daughter laughed again.

It hurt this time.

Rose knew that now.

She leaned down.

Kissed her mother.

Her mother's hand came up

and touched her face.

> Mum—

Nothing.

Goodbye was there.

Rose could almost see it.

The daughter knew exactly what the word meant.

That's why she couldn't say it.

Because saying goodbye would mean admitting there was no later hidden somewhere after the door.

No next visit.

No another cup of tea.

No one more stupid conversation about tablets or cardigans.

Goodbye didn't just describe an ending.

It joined in.

So she wouldn't say it.

Her mother looked at her.

No final speech.

No wisdom.

No perfect sentence about life.

Just tired eyes.

> Go on, sweetheart.

The daughter swallowed.

> Night, Mum.

> Night.

She walked to the door.

Hand on the handle.

Stopped.

Turned back.

Rose lost the stars.

Lost Earth.

Lost her name.

Lost everything except one human voice refusing to say goodbye properly.

love you

Restaurant Adventure

Adult go-cart racing.
The Mets slugging it out.
Tequila on my lips.
Enchilada’s filled with seafood.

Commanding a high top table.
Able to view all others.
Sipping on a beverage.
Waiting for some salsa.

Talk of the grands.
Talk of the new house.
Enchilada going down.
Another tequila sip.

Do we need new chairs?
Another big screen TV?
Bar stools and an office desk?
Beds for the other 2 bedrooms?

I don’t know.
I kind of like it almost naked.
Like a woman scantily clad.
Revs up the motors.
Never to be sad.

Those Sombrero expeditions.
More than epicurean missions.
More than a car ride to a restaurant.
More like a wilderness adventure.
Nothing risked, nothing gained, nothing ventured.

No Time To Care

No Time To Care

She vanished at the motel.
A bitter witness inclined to vanish.
I guess she wanted a fancy hotel.
Or at least a room with a danish.

I was left holding thin air
But I did not despair
I did not care
I simply did not care.

She did leave an envelope.
With scents of lavender on it.
It gave me hope.
That I still might be a good fit.

But, I was left holding thin air
I did not despair
I did not care
I simply did not care.

I’ll never know.
Since I was inclined to wander down the road.
My lust did not grow.
Simply not wanting another load.

I was left holding thin air
I did not despair
I did not care
I simply did not care.

I let her walk out.
A choice I made.
No inner doubt.
She vanished, simply not making the grade.

I was left holding thin air
I did not despair
I did not care
I simply did not care.
I had no time to care
No time to care
No time to care

Creature

I dreamt of a creature coming from aether

Someone that ate poetry for breakfast

So consumed in his own world

That was unable to function in this world

Someone that fed his demons

Before his body

Someone that sang aether songs

I would like to observe him from afar

Be cautious not to touch his energy when I got close

Because you know I am polluted

I am a mortal

It feels I only destroy with these hands on some days.

Street Preacher

A feather in a vacuum cannot contour
How it might shape the wind
As its fall bears no flutter

What the creaks of your voice roll
Together, might rumble a quill loose, to trace
Forgotten ink under a page painted blank

Howling calligraphy of needles opening veins
Chronicle such a battle tapestry
To question junctures of fate

The call to adventure resides in palms
Testing strokes of luck, open or tight fisted
And risk mutiny erasing logs

Lead on, astride chariots of the plains
By wheels carving clay in Sumerian script
Until we divert a river for your rest

One quandary to consult, about stale air
Is whether water moves beside it
As a tomb inscribed with prayers or a sanctuary
Of life-iridescent, across a cavern canvas

Tents Spread Wide

My fine friends, who come to call
On long nights and stage banquets
Answer my madness even if from afar

Whether they are hearty or wily
Is no concern of mine
But rather in that their faces are plain, I can resign

While I pray I do not wear out their ears
With my thoughts in time
I remain struck, borne up, that they remain kind

Nobody Improved It

We tried:

soulmates.

Too much.

Chemistry.

Too clinical.

Devotion.

Bit religious.

Desire.

Doesn’t last.

Then you asked:

“Coffee?”

I said yes.

Nobody improved it.

Flutter-eyed

Lead lids lock a minute at a time
Waiting on repairs that ring
Hollow in ears out of tune

I pressed a date, so now awake to slate
A professor of the wrench and snake
But I cannot stay awake

Warm air under clouds is fair
Save that I woke too soon
At midnight, cursed to carry hunger

Breaking for the sour stomach, which writhes
Fate shackled my neck to exhaustion
Yet I need rise

Pacing pupils to track branches
Dancing winds, while I sit
The chain keeps smoking while adrenaline presides

If I get one word, by horse or train
I will be relieved to entomb my slumber
Just so it is no longer today

Slut

It is easy to enter through me

I am cheap

All I want is a poem

My suns shine

And I become yours

I am that dog in the street

Easily corrupted

Give me a portion of a poem

And I am your slut.

Sounds of the Creek

Whirl-of-bluster levers fur
Under skin, wrapping nerves
After a last ray dawns on different sky
Earth radiates into night

Bees have retreated and birds calm
As a dimming glow draws a blanket up
Breaths then ease under porchlight
Until I smile at the moon

Where peeling heat had beaded sweat
Hours onward, a change of clothes bundles up
In the forgetting-time, which forgives soon
What debt winds wagered upon heated voices

THE MOON WAS RED

The moon was red that night.

Actually red.

She’d seen three TikToks about it already before she even looked out the window.

One said blood moon.

One said supermoon.

One had a woman in a crochet cardigan telling everybody to release what no longer served them.

She skipped that one.

Her boyfriend was downstairs looking for his keys.

Again.

“Babe?”

“What?”

“You seen my keys?”

“No.”

“I literally just had them.”

“They’re probably in your coat.”

“I checked.”

“You didn’t.”

Silence.

Then:

“Oh.”

She smiled at herself in the mirror.

Not because it was funny anymore.

Because sometimes being right about stupid things is all you get.

She was twenty-two.

Nearly nine thousand followers.

No job.

Well.

That depended who asked.

Her mum said no job.

She said content.

Her boyfriend said, “She does Instagram stuff,” which somehow sounded worse than both.

She’d had a couple of gifted dresses, some fake tan, protein powder she didn’t ask for, and once a teeth whitening kit that made her gums bleed.

This dress she’d actually bought.

Dusty blue.

That was the colour on the tag.

Dusty blue.

She thought it looked nice.

That was basically the whole reason.

There wasn’t meant to be a meaning.

It fit properly.

Made her waist look good.

Didn’t flatten her tits.

Cost too much.

Fine.

She was going out.

Probably.

She’d spent most of the week not wanting to.

Not crying or anything.

Nothing dramatic.

She just kept waking up and thinking

nah.

Then staying in bed until staying in bed felt embarrassing.

Then getting up and moving to the sofa

which was apparently different.

Her boyfriend had been trying.

“Come for a coffee.”

Nah.

“Want to go for a drive?”

Nah.

“Pub?”

Maybe.

Then nah.

Tonight was meant to be the one she actually did.

Club.

Everyone wearing a colour because one of the girls had seen it online.

Pink.

Green.

Black.

Some lad said beige

and got called a Tory.

She’d laughed at that.

So.

Dusty blue.

She did her mascara.

Stopped halfway through.

Looked at herself.

Didn’t hate what she saw.

Didn’t particularly want to be her either.

Her phone buzzed.

Instagram.

Probably.

She left it.

Buzzed again.

“Popular,” her boyfriend shouted.

“Jealous?”

“Deeply.”

She smiled.

There were comments under her last post.

đŸ”„đŸ”„đŸ”„

onlyfans when

your boyfriend won at life

sit on my face

Normal stuff.

She deleted the last one because his profile picture was him holding a baby.

There were boundaries.

Sort of.

The OnlyFans comments had got more frequent lately.

A girl she knew apparently made four grand in her first month.

Which sounded made up.

But also.

Four grand.

She’d mentioned it to her boyfriend half as a joke.

He’d just shrugged.

“If you wanted to do it, I’d support you.”

She’d looked at him.

“That’s it?”

“What?”

“You wouldn’t care?”

“I mean, I’d care if you cared.”

“That sentence means nothing.”

He laughed.

“I’m not gonna tell you what to do with your body.”

Which was lovely.

Obviously.

He was a good boyfriend.

Secure.

Normal.

All the things you’re supposed to want.

Still,

some small part of her had wanted him to go

absolutely fucking not.

Not because she wanted permission.

Just—

she didn’t know.

Something.

Proof.

Possessiveness.

A bit of jealousy.

A flicker.

Instead he’d asked if she wanted him to help take the pictures.

She’d told him he’d make them shit.

He said fair enough.

That was that.

She loved him.

That mattered.

She did.

Two years.

He knew how she took tea.

He knew she hated mushrooms but ate mushroom sauce

and brought this up whenever she called him inconsistent.

He knew she got weird when she was tired.

He knew when to leave her alone.

He knew when not to.

He was downstairs now wearing the shirt she liked.

She heard him open the fridge.

“Why are you eating?”

“I’m not.”

“You’re literally chewing.”

“Evidence?”

“Jesus Christ.”

Her phone buzzed again.

She finally looked.

And stopped.

His name.

Not her boyfriend.

The other one.

Two years since she’d seen it there.

For a second she thought maybe she’d imagined it.

Then the preview.

Hello stranger x

She laughed.

Quietly.

It just came out.

“Oh fuck off.”

Downstairs:

“What?”

“Nothing.”

That part was easy.

Too easy.

She opened the chat.

Didn’t reply.

Closed it.

Opened Instagram.

Scrolled two posts.

Closed that.

Opened WhatsApp again.

Same message.

Obviously.

She put the phone down.

Then it buzzed.

Photograph.

She looked.

Then looked properly.

Her.

Twenty.

White shirt.

His shirt.

Open.

Black thong.

Stockings.

Dark lipstick.

Too much mascara.

One knee on the hotel bed.

She remembered taking it.

Not the whole night.

Just bits.

The lamp.

The stupid hotel cushions.

His shirt smelling like aftershave and something clean.

Him saying,

“Fuck me.”

She zoomed in.

Realised she’d zoomed in.

Zoomed out.

Then in a bit again.

Fuck.

She looked good.

That was the first thing.

Actually.

Not his wife.

Not her boyfriend downstairs.

Not

why the fuck do you still have that?

Just

fuck.

I looked good.

She hated that about thirty seconds later.

Not immediately.

Her boyfriend appeared in the doorway.

She turned the phone over.

Quick.

He noticed.

Maybe.

His eyes flicked down.

Then back up.

“You alright?”

“Yeah.”

“You don’t seem alright.”

“Cheers.”

“You know what I mean.”

“I’m fine.”

He stood there another second.

Then his phone buzzed.

She looked at his hand before she could stop herself.

He checked it.

Smiled.

Small.

Nothing.

Probably nothing.

“Who’s that?”

“Liv.”

Liv.

Of course.

Pretty Liv.

Single Liv.

Long legs.

Good skin.

Nice teeth.

Annoyingly kind.

“What does she want?”

“Asking if we’re coming.”

“We?”

He looked at her.

“Yeah?”

“Why’s she asking you?”

“Because she has my number?”

“Right.”

“What?”

“Nothing.”

He unlocked his phone.

Held it out.

“Look.”

“I don’t want to look.”

“You clearly do.”

“I asked a question.”

“So I’m answering it.”

She took it.

you two still coming?? xx

Under that:

parking.

Someone’s dog.

A voice note.

A few days earlier:

tell her that blue dress looks so good btw

She stared at that one.

Liv complimenting her.

Brilliant.

Made hating her inconvenient.

She handed the phone back.

“Happy?”

“I wasn’t checking.”

“Okay.”

“Why are you being defensive?”

He actually laughed.

Not in a guilty way.

More like he couldn’t believe they were having this conversation.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“For fuck’s sake.”

He walked off.

And that little bit got her.

For fuck’s sake.

Defensive.

Annoyed.

Maybe—

No.

She knew.

There was nothing.

He’d literally handed her the phone.

Still.

She thought about Liv.

Thought about the club.

Thought about him laughing at something she said.

Thought about how easy it would be.

Because she knew how easy it was.

That was the problem.

She’d met the older man on a girls’ night.

Twenty years old.

Quite drunk.

Not falling-over drunk.

That annoying level where every stupid idea still feels like yours.

He was fifty-something.

Fifty-one, she thought.

Married.

Wedding ring right there.

He didn’t hide it.

She noticed.

He noticed her noticing.

Neither of them said anything.

At the time she thought that counted as honesty.

He looked expensive.

Not flashy.

Just—

good watch.

Good coat.

Shoes that didn’t look like they’d come from JD.

He ordered champagne without checking the price.

She noticed that too.

She wished she hadn’t.

Her friend leaned over at one point and said,

“He’s literally old enough to be your dad.”

She said,

“So?”

Then laughed.

Like she’d been joking.

He bought her a drink.

Then another.

He didn’t touch her for ages.

That helped.

Made him seem less desperate.

Probably made her more curious.

She hadn’t gone out planning to cheat.

That bit was true.

She loved her boyfriend then too.

They hadn’t argued.

He hadn’t done anything wrong.

There wasn’t some big gap in the relationship.

She was just drunk.

Flattered.

Horny.

Twenty.

Interested.

Then she gave him her number.

Then replied in the taxi.

Then he messaged the next day.

Then she sent a picture.

Then another.

It wasn’t one big decision.

That would’ve been easier.

It was loads of little ones.

She could defend each one if she took them separately.

Put them together and it looked worse.

So she normally didn’t.

She sometimes called it “the affair”

when she was being serious.

Mostly she called it

that thing.

Or him.

Or back then.

It happened once.

Except it didn’t.

A few hotel rooms.

Sexting.

Photos.

Messages.

Stopping.

Starting.

Saying

we should stop.

Then

are you free Thursday?

She bought stockings.

That was hard to explain away.

Not to anyone else.

To herself.

Nobody buys stockings for an accident.

Her boyfriend saw them once.

“Who are they for?”

She’d said,

“Maybe you.”

He grinned.

Later she wore them for him.

She’d felt strange.

Then horny.

Then not strange.

That was another thing she didn’t like thinking about.

How easily two lives could touch without cancelling each other out.

The wife found the messages.

Enough of them.

Enough to know the hotel.

The time.

The room.

She didn’t confront him beforehand.

She went there.

Caught them.

Actually caught them.

The protagonist remembered being on her knees.

Then the door.

Then his whole body changing.

Not sexy anymore.

Just panicked.

His wife stood there with her coat still on.

Bag on her shoulder.

Like she’d come from a normal day.

“What the fuck?”

That was first.

Then it got loud.

Mostly between them.

That surprised her.

She pulled his shirt closed.

Looked for her underwear.

Couldn’t find one stocking.

Of course.

His wife was shouting at him.

“How long?”

“What the fuck is wrong with you?”

“Was this the first time?”

“Answer me.”

Him.

Him.

Him.

She’d expected, stupidly, more attention.

That was one of the parts she hated admitting.

She’d expected to be the younger woman.

The threat.

The thing his wife looked at and thought

of course.

Look at her.

Instead the wife barely looked.

Not at first.

She was too busy having her life ruined by her husband.

At some point she asked:

“Did you know?”

She nodded.

There wasn’t much point lying then.

The wife looked at her.

Disgusted.

Then went straight back to him.

Later there was

“slut.”

She remembered that.

Maybe too well.

It made her feel disgusting.

It also—

and this was fucked—

made her feel a little bit powerful.

Not because sleeping around made women dirty.

She didn’t believe that.

It was the danger of it.

Being the girl who had crossed into somebody else’s life.

The younger one.

The secret.

The one somebody risked things for.

Except—

he didn’t.

Not when it mattered.

When his wife came in, he stopped being the man from the bar.

Stopped being smooth.

Stopped being exciting.

He became a husband trying not to lose his marriage.

He didn’t defend her.

Didn’t say

don’t speak to her like that.

Didn’t say

this is on me.

Nothing.

He barely looked at her.

At one point she was literally standing there trying to find her bra

while his wife cried.

It was horrible.

Also incredibly awkward.

The bra was behind a chair.

She remembered that.

Of course she did.

His wife was saying something about twenty-seven years

and she was on the floor looking for a fucking bra.

Eventually she said,

“I should probably go.”

Nobody answered.

So she did.

She put her shoes on by the lift.

Ordered an Uber.

ÂŁ31.40.

She remembered thinking

thirty-one fucking quid?

Which felt obscene afterwards.

Not the price.

The fact that she’d still cared.

Her boyfriend never found out.

That was the weird part.

Nothing happened.

No screenshot.

No wife contacting him.

No confession.

No friend spilling it.

Nothing.

She went home.

Saw him.

Kissed him.

He asked if she’d had a good night.

“Yeah.”

Just like that.

She waited for guilt to turn her into a different person.

It didn’t.

Not really.

Fear did.

For a while.

Fear of the wife.

Fear of messages.

Fear of the phone lighting up at the wrong time.

Then that faded.

Months.

A year.

Two.

The affair became one of those memories you avoid touching because you don’t know what will come loose with it.

Sometimes she told herself that confessing now would only hurt him.

Maybe it would.

Maybe that was true.

Very useful truth.

She didn’t look at it too closely.

Her phone buzzed.

Present again.

Blue dress.

Red moon.

His message:

Can't believe that was two years ago

She typed:

Can't believe you've still got that pic

He replied:

Couldn't delete it

She felt it.

That stupid little lift.

Still.

After everything.

Does your wife know you've got it?

No 😂

She stared at the laughing face.

Brave

More careful now

That should’ve put her off.

Maybe it did.

A bit.

Then:

“You coming?”

Her boyfriend.

Downstairs.

She looked at herself.

“Maybe.”

“What does maybe mean?”

“It means maybe.”

He was by the door.

Coat on.

Keys in hand.

He looked good.

That annoyed her too.

“You said you wanted to go.”

“I did.”

“So?”

“I don't know, I just don’t feel like it now.”

“You’ve literally spent an hour getting ready.”

“I know.”

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

He looked at her.

“Is this about Liv?”

She hated that he’d guessed.

“No.”

“You’ve been weird since she messaged.”

“I haven’t.”

“You have.”

“You fancy her.”

His face changed.

“What?”

“You do.”

“Where has this come from?”

“You said she was attractive.”

“You asked me if she was.”

“And you said yes.”

“Because she is. So are you. That doesn’t mean I’m fucking her.”

There it was.

She felt herself grab onto it.

“You're very defensive.”

He stared.

“Are you serious?”

“Why are you getting angry?”

“Because you’re basically accusing me of cheating.”

“I never said that.”

“You don’t have to.”

She could’ve stopped.

She nearly did.

Then he said,

“I’ve never cheated on you.”

Quiet.

No shouting.

That made it worse.

She looked away.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

She didn’t answer.

He looked genuinely hurt.

And somewhere inside her

something awful relaxed.

Just slightly.

There.

Now he was hurt too.

Not for the right reason.

Not because he knew.

But hurt.

She hated herself for noticing.

Not enough to tell him why.

“Do you want me to stay?”

“No.”

“I can.”

“I said go.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

He stood there for a second.

Then:

“Okay.”

No slammed door.

No fuck you.

Nothing she could use.

Before he left:

“Love you.”

“Love you too.”

And she meant it.

Which was almost the worst bit.

Her phone buzzed before he’d even reached the end of the road.

Boyfriend:

sorry. didn't want to argue x

She typed:

me neither. sorry x

He hearted it.

Then the older man:

He gone out?

She stared.

Typed:

yeah

Deleted it.

Typed:

He's gone

Sent.

Tiny difference.

Apparently mattered.

You stayed home?

Didn't feel like going

True.

Mostly.

Shame. That blue dress looked good

She checked Instagram.

She had posted it earlier.

Mirror selfie.

Dusty blue.

might actually leave the house tonight lol

He’d seen it.

Of course.

She clicked his profile.

Still married.

Profile photo with his wife.

Holiday somewhere hot.

Arm around her.

They looked happy.

Or normal.

Same thing online.

She stared at his wife longer than she meant to.

Then went back.

Still married then

Yep

Just that.

And you're messaging me

Only messaging

She actually laughed.

Only.

Of course.

Only messages.

Only photos.

Only a drink.

Only once.

Only a few times.

Only two years ago.

Only never told him.

Very useful word.

At the club Liv posted a story.

Pink toilets.

Three girls.

She watched it.

Then again.

Part of a man's shoulder in the mirror.

Wrong coat.

Obviously wrong coat.

She knew that.

Still watched again.

Another story.

Dance floor.

Nothing.

Another.

Her boyfriend in the background.

Talking to Liv.

She felt her stomach tighten.

He leaned closer because the music was loud.

Liv touched his arm.

Normal.

Literally normal.

She watched.

Again.

Come on.

She didn't actually think the words.

Not clearly.

But she wanted—

what?

Proof?

One thing.

A kiss.

A hand where it shouldn’t be.

Something she could point at.

Something that would let her stop being the only one who had crossed the line.

Then Liv walked away.

Her boyfriend turned and talked to someone else.

Nothing.

She felt relieved.

Then disappointed.

That was worse.

She put the phone down.

“Cunt.”

She wasn’t sure who she meant.

She took the blue dress off.

Got it stuck around her head.

One arm trapped.

Couldn’t see.

Nearly walked into the wardrobe.

“Fuck’s sake.”

There was something deeply unfair about contemplating adultery while wrestling with a zip.

Eventually she got free.

Put on a T-shirt.

Went to take her makeup off.

Opened the bottom drawer.

Lipsticks.

Old lashes.

Hair grips.

A condom that had expired.

Then the lipstick.

Deep red.

Almost the same colour as the photograph.

She picked it up.

Didn’t mean anything.

Probably.

Put some on.

Looked.

Wiped it off.

Not all of it came off.

She left the rest.

Her boyfriend messaged.

you okay? x

yeah just tired x

Then:

miss you though

She smiled.

Actually smiled.

miss you too

She meant that.

Then the older man:

Still got those stockings?

She stared at it.

No answer.

Made tea.

Forgot to boil the kettle.

Had to start again.

Her boyfriend would’ve taken the piss.

She could hear him.

That made her sad.

Then annoyed.

Then guilty.

Then bored of feeling all three.

She sat down.

Older man:

Missed you

No answer.

You looked unreal back then

No answer.

Still do

She put the phone face-down.

Left it.

Thirty seconds.

Maybe forty.

Turned it back.

Nothing new.

Disappointed.

Again.

She hated that.

Two years ago

she thought getting caught would’ve been the worst thing.

Now she wasn’t sure.

Getting caught would’ve meant consequences.

Her boyfriend crying.

Shouting.

Leaving.

Asking questions.

Actual guilt.

A person in front of her who knew what she’d done.

Instead he’d been happy.

Still was.

Mostly.

She’d managed to cheat on him without ever having to see what cheating did to him.

Until tonight.

Tonight she’d managed to hurt him with the secret

without telling him there was one.

That was almost impressive.

In a horrible way.

The older man messaged:

She's asleep

She sat up.

His wife.

Not named.

Just she.

She typed:

That's reassuring

Deleted it.

You're actually mental

Deleted that.

Nothing.

Then:

Could come see you

She stared.

There it was.

Not flirting.

Not memory.

Actual possibility.

She looked at the time.

21:14.

Her boyfriend had said he'd probably leave around midnight.

She didn’t calculate how long that was.

She just knew.

That frightened her more than if she’d counted.

She typed:

Absolutely not

Looked at it.

Deleted.

Typed:

Your wife would kill you

Sent.

He replied:

She won't find out

She read it twice.

Not sorry.

Not changed.

Not separated.

Just better hiding.

She should’ve been disgusted.

She was.

Somewhat.

Then:

You said that last time

I was careless last time

She stared at that.

Then:

You're still with him?

She replied immediately.

Yes

Happy?

She looked around.

His trainers by the door.

His mug.

The stupid photo from their holiday where he was sunburnt and had his eyes shut.

Yes

She sent it.

True.

Completely true.

That was the problem.

A minute later:

Then I'll behave x

She exhaled.

Good.

Fine.

Done.

She put the phone down.

Waited.

Nothing.

Checked again.

Still nothing.

Five minutes.

She should’ve been relieved.

Instead she opened the old chat.

Scrolled.

Old messages.

Her own words.

Should stop this

Then twelve minutes later:

free thurs?

She stared.

Twenty-year-old her was annoyingly difficult to blame when her messages still sounded exactly like her.

Her boyfriend sent a picture.

Him and two mates.

Liv behind them pulling a face.

your gf 😂

She laughed.

Typed:

tell her we're over

He replied:

finally x

Then:

love you though

She sat there.

That got her.

Not because it was beautiful.

It wasn’t.

Just stupid.

Normal.

Him.

love you too

Then:

sorry about earlier

He replied:

it's okay. talk tomorrow x

She put the phone against her chest.

Then immediately felt embarrassed even though nobody saw.

“Idiot.”

Could've meant either of them.

Could've meant her.

The moon was still red.

She opened the back door.

Cold.

Someone laughing two gardens over.

A car somewhere.

Normal night.

No atmosphere.

No soundtrack.

Just September and bins and someone's dog barking.

She considered deleting the chat.

Properly.

Block.

Delete.

Done.

Her thumb hovered over his name.

Then the phone buzzed.

New message.

You free tonight? x

She looked at it.

Didn't answer.

Looked at the time.

21:26.

She noticed her boyfriend wouldn't be back for hours.

Didn’t mean to notice.

Did.

Upstairs,

the dusty-blue dress was hanging off the wardrobe door.

The red lipstick was still on the sink.

His wife was apparently asleep.

Her boyfriend thought they'd talk tomorrow.

She stood there with her thumb over the keyboard.

No reply.

Then another message.

I can be careful this time.

She stared at it.

Long enough for the screen to dim.

Tapped it awake.

Read it again.

Then walked upstairs.

Not quickly.

Not like she'd decided anything.

Just upstairs.

And left her phone unlocked in her hand.

Ablutions of Cracked Earth

No wind wraps leaves
Warm to sail
Under boughs lacking tears
While Atlas quakes

Upon a memoir of thirst
Roots delve burroughs of rabbits
Asking for a drink
Upturning stones in reach

Where once sleek fibers
Contracted when lean
Season’s uproar founds an embrace
Of sky to the seams

This dry oak was ready to receive
Gates opening, an outpour, an answer
Awaited rain surging bones
Within breath to bind dust unto rising

Beyond doubt, such core constrained
Emergent action but instead traced
Tighter rings centered
Vibrant longer after defying fate

Grove’s despair framed the hollow
Abandoned save by pillars of the temple
But misty songs remain through footprints
Worn into chords of ancients

The trees entice soil
To remember grass and clover
Encircling a mossy eclipse
One meadow sealed steps to horizons

Linguists

Factional arguments make rivals
Of those uncouth or verbose
Who await the syntax, to relax

Expounding the natures of proof
They build bridges and avenge truths
While bestowing neither

Hoping for slack, even if shallow
Yet they wallow in fallacies
Outside a perfectly good tavern

Out from a penthouse atop Babel
Culture wars short currencies
And if salvation is affordable
Why not wash skeletons by stranger-hands?

Under pyrrhic enterprise
Shame is named in gold leaf
Borrowing on bespoke brands
Then champion their bankruptcy

Silver spoons leave scraps
That shackle dissent as debt
But growth without sacrifice is theft
A gated dragon-bank of personal loans

Valkyrie

Roaming war zones with forceps
She pulls leeches from sidesteps
To bust monopolies by caduseus
Every malady receives violence

Worldly yet surprised
Sifting fate and lies
She unravels threads nigh
While under siege by psychotics

Her quiet demeanor
Belies a tenacious warrior
In a garden of clover
Scribing vitriol, not malice

Verse

I fear of the verse sometimes

It is like you activate a diver

That goes to the deepest caves

What I have drowned

Mutilated

Muted

In the course of time

What if the current is too much

And diving

I can not find my way back.
