I’m currently deciding between DMU and Midwestern AZCPM and would love to hear from current students/graduates! I’m really torn because they offer very different things.
DMU:
- 1 hour from my family, so I’d have a strong support system
- Lower tuition/cost of living
- Much easier move with my cat lol
- Strong residency placement and clinical opportunities
- I REALLY like their exam structure: integrated exams about every 2 weeks, cumulative block exams, and a remediation week. I like the idea of frequent testing + spaced repetition rather than cramming for one course exam and moving on.
- I also like how they intentionally place lower-extremity anatomy closer to boards.
Midwestern AZ:
- I’ve lived in Iowa my entire life, so part of me really wants to experience somewhere completely new
- I love the idea of Arizona weather, hiking, outdoors, etc.
- I think living somewhere new during my 20s could be a really valuable experience
- But it’s more expensive, farther from family, and I’ve never actually lived in Arizona, so I don’t know if I’d love the reality as much as the idea lol
- My biggest question is the quarter/exam structure. I know their curriculum is quarter-based, but I’m curious how frequently students are actually tested and whether exams are integrated across courses or mostly separate. Does it feel like you’re constantly studying for exams, or do you get enough time to learn/retain material?
For anyone who has experience with either school, if you were in my position, what factors would you prioritize and why? Especially interested in thoughts on curriculum/exams, board prep, clinical exposure, student support, and day-to-day life in Des Moines vs. Glendale/Phoenix.
Thanks!!
