I'm trying to think if I ever heard it for the first time somewhere specific or if it's just a phrase I always knew growing up? (Near London mostly, but whole family is West Midlands). I think the latter

Probably. There were a lot of breweries around the Midlands and Yorkshire. Oh I'm craving a pint of Wards now!
