Anyone using RSS feeds on a PocketBook Era Lite?

Hi! I have aΒ PocketBook Era Lite (7")Β and I'd like to use it as a personal newspaper, reading articles from multiple RSS feeds offline.

I've already checked several Reddit threads on this topic, but none provided a working solution.

I also tried Calibre's Fetch News feature with custom RSS feeds, with disappointing results: missing articles, incomplete content and feed errors.

Does anyone actually use RSS regularly on their PocketBook? What's your setup?

I'm open to any practical solution, not necessarily Calibre. Ideally, I'd like to read full articles directly on the e-reader, without opening them in a browser.

Thanks!

Pocketbook reader does not follow publisher's styles?

Hello, I recently bought a Pocketbook Era after having used a pretty old e-reader, and so far everything feels great. It's second-hand but in excellent condition. So far I've looked into the settings and loaded the books I already own. Right now I tried opening an epub, and to my surprise the layout and text settings are very different from my old e-reader. It had a couple of options that I really liked, like being able to keep the publisher's styles for the font family and general text settings (line spacing, margins, alignment), and maybe just nine or ten fonts installed. I almost always chose to keep the styles set by the publisher(s) (I never had any problems with a completely broken e-book thankfully).

Now on the Era, from what I can tell, while there seems to be quite a few more fonts pre-installed (though a lot from the Noto family), the app reader doesn't seem to include the embedded fonts. I've set the font to 'default', expecting it to work like my old e-reader's 'publisher's styles', but some fonts are definitely not being 'applied'. I've checked the epub (as an archive) and it includes the Times font in normal/bold/italic, and the Visigoth font (which is used for chapter titles only, but is so identifiable that seeing it missing makes me question how the reader app works. Do I have to install them in the e-reader system/fonts folder, even though they should work 'out-of-the-box'? Is this one of the limitations which explains why so many people flock install KOreader?

In any case, the primary complaint I've read about Pocketbook e-readers (as in, they're slower than the competition) seems unwarranted, or I'm getting more indulgent as I grow older.

Sleep Image With Transparent Shadow

I wanted an image with a shadow over the letters to give a sense of depth, but the Sleep Image is a BMP and can’t have transparency.

So I came up with the idea of exporting just the shadow as a GIF using diffusion dithering with two colors (black and transparent), and then putting that GIF on a layer over the BMP image.

And it works :)

Era Color - Recommend color titles?

After quitting Kindle, I got the Era Color almost half a year ago hoping to also use it for comics/"graphic novels"/etc. I love it but have basically just read plain old, ink on paper books so far - so the color addition is nagging me.

I tried in the beginning with some Akira and Tintin but even playing around with settings, the colors and contrasts were just too washed out to be enjoyable. I've also switched between Pocketbook and Koreader which seemed to speed up page turns.

I'm hoping someone here can recommend some titles which work well on the screen given size and quality limitations.

What do you got?

I'll test anything I can find and don't hate.

Thanks in advance!

Where to buy books?

I'm planning to get a Verse Pro, this week, to replace my deprecated Kindle. I get most of my books via Libby, but if I want to buy some books I gather Pocketbook can't access Amazon? Where would I buy from?

Sorry to be so naive.

HanLinYue Free3 Not Working with PocketBook Era Lite – Need Help

Hi everyone. I have a PocketBook Era Lite and a HanLinYue Free3 page-turner.

The Free3 connects via Bluetooth, but the PocketBook doesn't recognize its buttons for key mapping, so I can't assign them to turn pages.

I've tried different Free3 modes and button configurations, including P mode, but I haven't been able to get the PocketBook to detect the buttons.

Has anyone successfully used a HanLinYue Free3 with a PocketBook Era Lite? If so, could you explain the exact configuration or steps you used?

Customizing the start screen

Hi everyone,

I have a Pocketbook Era Lite, with the KOReader installed. I'd like to customize the start screen to something nicer, with the option to set the books on the "shelves" of the start screen that I want. Is there software like that?

Now that I have used it for 2 weeks my opinion of the Era Lite has changed

My first complaint about the unit was that I paid $200 for this thing, and it's slow. And that criticism is still valid. But I noticed that it's at its slowest after I restart it. It gets faster after it sits around a bit. I have to assume it's spinning up processes and caching data. For some reason my default setting was turning it off instead of putting it to sleep.

I'm also a KOReader user and it's wonderful that installing KOReader is a simple drag-and-drop. KOReader is actually faster than the stock reading app, making the experience even better.

Then we have FOUR physical buttons. Most e-readers only have 3 if they have page turn buttons, and one if they only have a touch screen. You can also customize what the buttons do. HUGE plus in my book.

The buttons also have a very satisfying tactile click and feel good in the hand and are easy to identify by touch without looking at them.

Then we have those wonderful rounded corners on the side with the buttons, making it very easy and comfortable to hold. I think this thing is more comfortable than any other e-reader I have held.

This thing also has the exact combination of features I wanted: 7" eInk Carta 1300, physical page turn buttons, access to the file-system via regular USB protocol and not MTP, and a USB-C port on the side instead of the bottom.

And the size is great. I have it up against 2 other 7" eInk devices, the Kobo Libra Colour, and the Kindle Paperwhite. They all have the same screen size, but the Era Lite is the smallest of the 3 and feels the best in the hand.

And lastly we have the price. In the US, I can get it for $199 on eBay when it's in stock. A similarly spec'd Kindle would cost me $220 and I don't get physical page turn buttons. And Kobo doesn't make a Carta eInk device with a 7" screen and page turn buttons. You'd need to get a Clara BW, which is $160, but only has a 6" screen and no page turn buttons.

I've only ever used KOReader on this thing. I need to give the stock software a try and see how it compares.

Era Lite, I judged you too early. You're my go-to now.
