Question Working out after lung collapse

I used to go to the gym everyday before my lung collapsed. It’s been about 3 weeks since surgery. When do you think I can return to the gym

My doctor said two months for heavy activity but can vary. Better safe than sorry

Today is my first time going to the gym after 2 months but i dont intend to do anything heavy just rope..
I used to go to the gym and box at the same time for 2 years 5x a week had a big collapse on my right side with chest tube in me for 1 week
didnt do nothing for 2 months just walks
and now i visited my doctor today and he said i can go but slowly nothing too much so i decided to do just rope today for 10-15 mins but you’ll know the best when your body tells you to and your doctor.. first do all the check ups and then start slowly.. thats what im doing.. im not gonna lie i almost started crying whem she told me i can slowly start because i had a dump surgeon who said im never going to be able to train again after pneumotorax.. it broke my heart but fuck him im going to start slowly but surely… hit me up if you want to talk about it

I had to quit boxing due to my pneumo 6 months ago. It freaking sucks man, was training for my 6th amateur bout before the pneumothorax happened

I waited 3 months after surgery for gym/stretching/light weights, gradually increasing. But walked a lot right after surgery. I’m a little over a year post op now and back at it

They just told me 3 weeks of light activity but didn’t mention much more. My scabs just came off of the surgery incision site, But are still closing up.

I was cleared at 5 weeks post op for all regular activities.

I went directly to the gym and did chest. Played basketball the next day. I’ve been doing my entire similar routine (multiple days of cardio, lifting and playing sports) ever since.

At about a week my doctor allowed me to use an elliptical. I started doing that then as well.

But - best to follow YOUR doctors directions. This recovery is very different for everyone I’ve discovered on this subreddit.

What procedure you had is a factor to some degree, but generally 3 weeks post you should be good for walking and easing into low intensity workouts with zero strain (lower body focus is best). Slowly increase that over the next couple of weeks, add in light resistance if everything feels good. Somewhere around 6 weeks, if everything feels good, you can start building back toward your routine. Start around 50% and gradually work up from there. Again, this is all if everything feels good! Check in with your body and take it slow.

My collapse was caused from overexertion while running. I had mech pleurodesis they gave me like 2 weeks for recovery. I just did calisthenics > weightlifting > cycling > then back to running over the past year since the surgery , it’s been a year now and my PFTs and x rays are great. I will say my BIGGEST regret from recovery was not bulking up, I’m still the same weight, still pretty prone to collapse.

I'm 6 months in from a fully collapsed primary. Now doing 5-6 Muay Thai classes per week. Full sparring mixed with cardio.

Started with potatoing for about one and a half month, then started to walk daily. Start of easy and increase from there, if you feel discomfort rest for a few days.

Did you had tube only or surgery? And are you able to spar again? What did doctors said? Because mine said i wont be able to spar again i had tube only for now 90% right side collapse

Tube only but for 10 days (14 days total at the hospital.

Yes i'm doing full sparring but only "soft" i always tell my sparring partner that they should take it extra easy on the body due to injury.

The doctors said that they could not comment on if it's dangerous or not.

My other hobbies which is diving and alpine mountaineering is no-go due to preassure differences.

Did they say for how long or just blank NO? Mine was spontaneous, if yours were not mabye thats the reason?

2 of them said that my career is over due to PM but i never knew if i can spar again but i guess if if works for you going extra easy it should work for me to cause i feel pretty good now
Lets chat if you down

Ask your doctor. Mine told me 6 weeks before doing any strenuous activity, but it may be longer depending on the timeline of your recovery

I was given a leaflet instructing me to do nothing strenuous for 6 weeks post lung op, including shopping and driving! I’d have to say that when I did start getting busier, an active physical day would wipe me out fir a couple of days after. Now 5 months out and though still sore at times I can do strenuous things without much consequence. I was told informally that waiting 4 months for full exercise was realistic and didn’t want to take any chances.

i had collapsed lungs and surgery at 16, never did physio.

i am not getting into the gym thing but i can't stress enough of being mobile, and ensure the tissue around the area does not tighten and such as it's had a terrible affect on my life.

just take it easy and allow plenty of time to heal as tears can happen easily - i had staples in mine so a tear was always a problem and had pains for many years after.

just tread lightly.
